    Hallelujah ! one of the very few who really understand what this bike is all about. All of the negative comments on the 961 are from folk who have either no idea what they're talkin about, have never ridden one or think fast,smooth n modern mean better.... thanks to TVS for continuing building this bike.

      I couldn’t agree more! Today’s crop of riders are spoiled rotten whilst incapable for the most part of utilizing even half a percent of the Bikes performance capabilities and I wonder about their mechanical capabilities as well. The Indian company that acquired NORTON seems to have done a brilliant job of capturing the essence of the original and improving it via modern materials and manufacturing processes. LOVE the Mechanical Symphony of this modern interpretation of the Commando! If I had the $$$ I’d snap one up so quickly my Wife wouldn’t even get to say “why do you need ANOTHER Bike anyway?” before it was sitting in my Bike Barn!😝

      I think the Speed Twin 1200 is a much better modern retro. If you want the feeling and character an old bike gives then buy a good restored Commando 850, they were great bikes to ride.

    Well I absolutely love my 961SF, nice to hear a review someone who gets it. Personally don't think it has a bad angle on it and love the engine. Its not fast, its not modern being push rod but that's the point. I own and ride a '59 Velocette Venom and the 961 has the right old school feel and vibes in a modern chassis. Triumph classics such as the Thruxton are superb bikes, look fantastic and brilliant Modern smooth, strong engines and that's where they don't work for me they are too modern so I didn't buy one, personal choice!!
    We all love or need different things from our bikes, it is expensive and I guess that 'built in Britain' tag is the reason. If its too much don't buy it, I gave up with Ducati for the same reason, over priced and over tech'd for me.

    • @MrDarcy-OlMan
      @MrDarcy-OlMan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes that’s precisely it! A lot of people have commented that the Thruxton is faster, but that’s irrelevant. Both me and the Ol Man would far rather have character than speed 💯👍🏼

  • @johnstone7697
    @johnstone7697 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    The original Commando had the Isolastic motor mount system to quell those vibes. Vibration was a well known complaint on the earlier Nortons, and they developed a way to deal with it. I don't see any of that on this bike, so the vibes once again rear their ugly head. BTW, back in the day we didn't call it "character", we called it "vibration" "buzzy engine" or "British Twin".

    I booked a test ride on the Commando for while I was getting the first service on my Street Triple RS, I love its looks and I decided to ignore all the negative reviews as it turned out wrongly, first off it weighs over 30kgs more than the 1970s Commando and it's gutless even compared to middleweight naked budget bikes like the Suzuki GSX8S and the Trident 660 which are 300cc less but still are more powerful, produce more torque and cost half the price, a more realistic comparison would be the Royal Enfield GT Continental or Interceptor but once again it's heavier than both and costs £10,000 more. don't forget the original Commando was the Fireblade or R1 of its day so I think it's not unreasonable to expect a bit of excitement from it, it's absolutely beautiful but equally an absolute disappointment.

    I’m happy that Norton continued development of this bike. Nice not having a radiator hanging out front to compromise the looks. Wish it sounded more like the old Commando with the 360 crank (former Norton owner here), but I’m sure this configuration is better, if not smoother. Seems to compare favorably with Triumph’s Thruxton.

I had a factory tour myself a few months ago, unfortunately I didn't see the bikes being worked on as they were preparing for the launch of the new special editions. The Norton 981 Commando was first designed down the road away in Milwaukee, Or. U.S.A. I saw and heard a pre-production prototype, moving through downtown traffic here. It was instant lust. Sadly, production was halted and the design and production rights sold. It's still a beautiful bike.

  • @hughmac7423
    @hughmac7423 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It is a very nice but expensive bike. I have a 1988 Lowrider, hotted up, it has character. I also have a 2022 Pan Am Special Enthusiast Collection, I think it has character too, especially since I fitted a Vance and Hines muffler, which has significantly improved the power and torque under 5000rpm and over as well, the vibration from the motor makes if feel meaty on the 150hp setting. The character it has is different, more tech based. I ride it most days each week, it is a fantastic commuter and all roads sports tourer. It is not an off road bike, it can do it, but it is like a truck in weight compared to a proper smaller size off road bike. It is the perfect bike of Australian roads, because they are crap roads, with lots of potholes.
    I think you look better on this than the Indian Scouts.
    If I could by an Norton I would.

  • @christyrer9530
    @christyrer9530 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Great monologue at the end about buying British. It is such a characterful bike and the press it has received in some way reminds me of the Hesketh V1000, a bike that came out when I first started riding in the early 80’s and a bike I’m sure the Old Man will remember. A bike built in Britain in an era of total Japanese dominance that was outclassed in practically every way yet so uniquely British and very expensive, even more so today should you be able to find one 👍.

    It’s beautiful and surely sells itself on the looks, sound and nostalgia, and I get the connection to it from the way it feels alive. Kind of like a restomod Norton but at the end of the day
    A) £16k ouch!

    I don't want to kerb your enthusiasm, but I hope that tank s steel, as if it is still plastic you might find it reacts with the new petrol. A friend had one of these and sold it as the tank reacted with the fuel, and a replacement was about £2500, made by the same company. It is a nice looking bike but be aware of its faults. Good luck

  • @Trevor_Austin
    @Trevor_Austin 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The Commando is a beautiful bike, from any angle. I like the “open” look between the frame. The tank, the (gold) forks, engine - everything is gorgeous. I can accept the vibrations and I can accept the rather high price. Yet I think it is a bit short in the horsepower and torque departments. I’m sure that in the real world it has more than enough umph about it but a special bike should be a little bit “special” in performance as well. This is a fur coat and no knickers job.

    Very nice, very thoughtful review. I am, however, bothered by the fact that discussion of the 961 rarely mentions Kenny Dreer. He is the bridge between Norton then and Norton now, and there would be no 961 without him (or any Norton as we know it, for that matter).

    Not sure why everyone seems to moan about the price of these bikes. I had a 961 cafe racer in 2019 and it was £16,500 BEFORE the open exhaust pipes were fitted. Considering inflation etc these Nortons are effectively cheaper than they were 5 years ago! And hopefully more reliable 😬

  • @flatcapcaferacer
    @flatcapcaferacer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    50 mph to avoid uncomfortable vibration is way too much character for a bike costing this much for me. My Royal Enfield Classic Chrome 500 can ridden at 55 mph and looks great is at least 75% less expensive.
    Now my Royal Enfield brakes and suspension are budget but do you need great brakes and suspension for 50 mph?
    Would I buy the Norton 961 if I had the money? Oh yes but as 4th motorcycle but it would have to replace the Royal Enfield and that sounds crazy to me.

I do wonder though about the vibrations: I ride (amongst others) a Ducati S4R ... Ducs are known for being rumbly so it would be interesting to know how this compares. It looks beautiful. So glad to see Norton back in business. Just gorgeous.
    Interested to know the brand and model of pants you're wearing: very cool and not at all "bikey" - could easily fit in with Sunday brunch crowd down at the local cafe.

    Hey now, Triumphs are still made in the UK. Not all of them, sure, but the higher spec ones are. Lets be honest the commando is...just not as good as a Thruxton. Not as high spec, not as good looking, doesn't handle as well, not as fast. The Nortons are just impossible to justify given the competition just down the road.

    Never really loved Norton's personally. I know people really have loved the looks but something about the flow of bike body parts in the past turned me off compared to Triumph's bikes, particularly the rear, but this I really like! I really love that you are using the word Character for this bike, I honestly think that's the most important feature of a motorcycle so you've definitely made me want one now!
    P.S. It would be super helpful if when you compare this bike to features in other bikes that you do a quick overlay so we can see what you're talking about. Great video!

    Love the review. Not keen on the Dunflop tyres or the brake & clutch reservoirs or the sound of the electric starter motor, oh and the cheap looking indicators but that’s about it.
    The rest is pure beauty. I’m not that bothered about the vibration issues either. This Norton Commando is an art form on wheels.
    I’d have no qualms at all of owning any of the 961 variants as they all look so good. I’m torn between the silver or black.
    Thanks for your video and the crystal clear quality of your recording equipment.
    As for the fly tippers, they need a good thumping and burying somewhere secluded far from the madding crowds. Going back to the tyres, they need changing to a good set of Michelin R6’s IMO.

    In the 5-speed gearbox - there are bikes (and cars) that have a massive overdrive in 5th gear, it just means you only ride in 1st-4th unless you're cruising at 50mph+
    The Kawasaki W800 actually has a mighty overdrive, you should try and get on one of them to compare it against modern classics. It's a shame Kawasaki stopped selling that bike here, it's a stunner!

    They’ve certainly run with design cues from the originals and done a pretty good job of it. Looks like an Interstate and a Fastback begot a baby. Agree on the fork tubes and the front guard. Just about guarantee that various companies will bring in accessories to remedy much of for those seeking a genuine retro look. I can see it in black with gold pinstripes and lettering. My old Nortons were vibration free unless the isolastics were shot or too tight. Priced out of the reach of most of us though.
    The performance figures seem a bit underwhelming but actual riding might make these meaningless. It sounds like the business though!

    Stunning looks - apart from the gold forks / rear shocks (silver please) and the front mudguard (longer and or with clip-on for wet conditions). Inconspicuous LED indicators too... Personally I would like slightly higher bars ( I'm 6.2) and 'angleable' clocks to face rider directly (tangential to eye). Surely there is space for the seat to be better padded ( if uncomfortable ) and for adjustment rearward for longer legs. For the price such details (options) may matter. Vibration - it has a 270 degree crank with balancer shafts so that should be smooth enough.... The exhaust sound could be deeper. But overall, gorgeous.

    So we can add Norton to the list of brands with golden fork legs, Ohlin's have a lot on their conscience. Golden fork legs on a Commando, what were they thinking? Can anyone imagine the original Commando with golden fork legs? It's a shame, because apart from those fork legs and the reservoirs on the rear shocks it's a stunning machine (as it should be at that price). But I guess that in that price range you can live with having to pay a little extra for a pair of fork legs that actually match the bike.

I agree with the Ol boy, I would have preferred the classic forks not the inverted forks, also I would have preferred rear shocks without the piggyback, but they are Olin's, cant beat that. Other than the price, like the Ol man I would prefer a more classic suspension system on a retro bike, I think its supposed to be a retro bike?. Being in Canada I'll probably never see or unless I win a lottery would not be able to justify owning but if I had the money Ya I would pay the extra just to say it was built in Great Britain.
