Reed Sheppard Might Be Even Better Than We Thought...

- Reed Sheppard was taken with the #3 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but with how he's been playing for the Houston Rockets throughout the 2024 NBA Summer League, it looks like he might've had a pretty good case to go #1 overall.
Reed Sheppard played one year at the University of Kentucky, and during that season, he was playing alongside a pretty talented UK roster. As a result, we didn't get to see his full range of skills on display at all times. But now that he's been balling in the Summer League, Reed Sheppard looks like a huge steal at #3 for the Houston Rockets.

Best pick of the draft. Kid is a stud. Rockets needed a playmaker and they found him.
Isn’t he coming off the bench?
@@uptowng7819still seems great
FVV is an excellent playmaker. Reed is his future replacement, but will come off the bench initially.
@@uptowng7819well what’s that supposed to mean so if he comes off the bench he can’t be a big impact?
@@pg13pacernation30 wasn’t trying to say anything lil bro just asking a question
My favourite player in the draft so far, just so smooth and composed. Great vid as always Alex
I’ve been impressed how comfortable and how much in control Reed has looked operating getting to his spots in the midrange whether that’s been in the pick and roll and coming off screens. His change of pace has been great as well not just creating quality looks for himself but for his teammates as well.
This guy does EVERYTHING. He can shoot, he can pass, he steals the ball, he blocks shots.
And he's a freak athlete
I said this before he got drafted, but he reminds me of Book coming out of college. Came off the bench on a stacked college team where he was limited to a spot up/off ball role and both of their self-creation abilities were underused. Both 3 level scorers, good athletes, play well with pace. Reed is just smaller, but he’s a better passer and defender
-- can we say, Mark Price 2.0?
from the same school too. You nailed it.
Coming off the bench shooting 3s for the rockets as instant offense might work out till he works his way to starter in a couple of years
One thing that impresses me about Sheppard is that he already has a floater. Offensively, he reminds me a lot of Jamal Murray and CJ McCollum.
Yeah, I read a few draft previews saying that said Sheppard should develop a floater. Ha, check, I guess.
im not saying it will wind up proving to be the case, but going into that draft, he was the safest pick available. i would have taken him. A freshman in the best division in college basketball with those shooting splits on top of being a high IQ player, a willing and creative passer, and a truly gifted athlete suggests the guy is going to be - at his floor - an all star. I believe he'll be an all nba guy and take a few runs at MVP. While if all things go to plan with Rosicher and Sarr, their measurements create a higher ceiling. But I think it's quite clear that their floors' are much lower than Reed's
UK fans saw this all year long with him coming off the bench. A lot of people didn’t understand the pick. I’m glad people are now realizing his talent. When in doubt, draft a UK guard.
I barely realized he’s out of Kentucky. Lol that’s practically a guaranteed star guard in the league. 😎
Reed Sheppard is the ____ best player of the draft 👇
#1
-
Kentucky continues to put Monsters in the League.
This kids amazing. Def a PG. thats crazy i didnt know he didnt play much PG in college. Show some love to scotty pippen jr next! Kids ballin too. Awesome to see.
As soon as you started talking about release time on catch and shoot, instant credibility in my mind. Reed Sheppard has all the skills to be a star and gets to learn from a vet in Van Fleet....all good things.
He's an elite type of player and should have been the #1 overall draft. The only thing that held the other teams back was his height.
Thank you Alex for your basketball insight with many videos such as these. Just ignore all these guys like the one below the video. They can't do shit since they don't know how to cover the takes that you bring up and the overall analysis we might have miss each video like these. Make more videos man and keep it up for real.
I'm not really great at predictions but I felt 100% sure that Reed Shepherd was probably going to be the best player coming out of this year's draft. He was playing for a high-profile team and playing in important games and he was always good in those games. Not necessarily in the tournament but Kentucky just didn't show up very well for the tournament. The guy had an insane 3-point percentage and you can see from the highlights that he took them from all over. Not only that but he was amazing at getting steals and blocks which is just insane for a guy who's probably really 6 foot 2. The only thing that's going to stop him from being the rookie of the Year is the fact that the team he's playing for is full of a lot of guards who are going to get playing time possibly ahead of him. I'm a Spurs fan and I really really wanted them to take Reed Shepherd and with the two picks in the top 10 they could have moved up a spot to do it but they decided that they found their guy in Stephon CastIe. I think Stephon is going to be good but we've seen a lot of guys that play at about his level but we haven't seen a lot of shooters like Reed Shepherd. People want to call him the next Mark Price which is a great compliment but that's just some racial bias cuz he doesn't play the game the way I remember Mark Price playing. If we're going to do white dudes then I would say that he's kind of a mix of Manu Ginobili and Steve Kerr. If he gets enough time on the court this year I think he can really help that Rockets team but they've got too many young guys and they can only keep some of them. Many of them are guards. I think we're going to have to see if Jalen green was as good as that last month of the season or if he's that guy who had the lowest shooting percentage in the league for the entire season before the last month, well maybe it wasn't the worst but sometimes it was.. Even the season before he was dreadful sort of like Scoot Henderson last year.😊
He is definitely going to ultimately take over for Fred VanVleet as the point guard. And we will settle on Amen Thompson (initially drafted to fulfill that role) as a wing. The only question is whether the 2 guard will be Jalen Green or Cam Whitmore.
I work with a buddy who I told I think Rockets made a mistake drafting Reed over Dillingham. I'm already back tracking haha
I think he is one of the rare hoopers that actually do better in nba than college much like Steph Curry or Donovan Mitchell. Undersized, super skilled, and quick players can be hampered often in college bc of the physicality and hand checking. Reed might be another guy that looks better in the NBA.
He is a future five time all star and Signture shoe should be on the way
Probably should have been number one. That said, as a Spurs fan, I think there is an argument for Castle being the better pick for them because of his physical size and strength, the diversity of his skill set and his potential to be an elite perimeter defender, which is something Sheppard fundamentally can't ever be to the same degree. But Sheppard's upside as a playmaking lead guard is very exciting, Rockets got themselves one.
If castle’s shot didnt develop then they just drafted another sochan
This guy is ready to run an NBA offense. He's shockingly polished for how little hype I heard about him. He doesn't have many holes in his game, and he has several strengths already. He has a very good feel for the game, which is something that is hard to teach, and is one of the most important things. My only concern is his height and weight (but he's tall enough and pretty strong already). If he can hold his own against bigger players on defense and not be a liability, he could very well be in the top echelon of point guards in a few years. I'd say his ceiling is Steve Nash-esque, with maybe not quite the level of ball-dominant playmaking as Nash, but with much better defense.
Dude passes the eye test and advanced stats. He a diamond in the rough.
Was the top guy on my big board for 90 percent of the season, if Sarr went number 1 Shep woulda totally went number 2, can’t overreact to Summer League but he has been the best rookie so far by a country mile
He’s nice no doubt will even get better by year 2
UK fans know ball as well or better than any fanbase. We knew what he could be since high school. Cal probably wouldn’t have recruited him if not for finally being pressured to do it. Sure enough gained a late 5th star in high school. Kid had the best teachers growing up being the son of two Kentucky basketball legends. We all pretty much knew he was gone after this past season but a small slither of hope that he would return for his love of UK. He was too good not to go pro early.
Matas, Reed & Knecht have been the 3 guys that have stood out for me.
Summer League Sheppar + regular season Wemby would be perfect match
Amen and Reed are the future backcourt
Trade Jalen + FVV with for a star SF to compliment them, Jabari, Cam, and Sengun
Kentucky keeps putting Monsters in the League.
I agree, reed should’ve been the first pick just from the eye test. He’s never rushed and have all the skills!
he’s def going to be good for the rockets next season they need a constant player who is a good playmaker and can shoot
Reed Sheppard is a 6'2 shooting guard who will be attacked MERCILESSLY on the defensive end...
Players that size that aren't elite playmakers NEVER impact winning
I think Sheppard will be a good role player and have a long career...
But all this glazing is completely out of control
Here's hoping he's our future starting PG for the Houston Rockets
I’m curious, where does that leave FVV? They just paid him and he’s been really good for the young guys in Houston
This year, FVV is the starter, no doubt. After that, who knows.
Sheppard has it.
Base: spacer, upper: commander.
It’s crazy he got drafted so much higher than Rob dillingham
Oppss, the media and pod casters got this one wrong. which made me so happy as a Rockets fan. One more call that Stone got right...lol
He reminds me of devin booker funny enough, KU can really make some solid gaurds
gives me goran dragic but athletic kind of vibe for sure
Here to double whatch n like 🎉
great video as always im trying to become a basketball youtuber like you
Tbh all you really have to do is look at the track record of Kentucky guards the last few yrs...Maxey, Quickley, Booker, Sharpe, Murray, Bledsoe, Wall. there's obviously been a few misses but not many lol
Can please someone explain why he only started 5 out of 33 games in Kentucky? Who is the starting PG there? Thanks!
Reed the only one in the draft thats playing as advertised.
Tyus Jones floor
Tyus huh? I was thinking Steve Francis, but I'll allow it
Best thing about this kid is he helped undo Caliparis stranglehold on UK basketball! Everybody could see how good he was and Cow rubbed it in our faces he didn't have to start him even though he's top draft pick material. Pissed people off so bad it made Lexington uninhabitable for Cal. We couldn't be happier he's gone. Look up his last five year record to clear up any confusion. Calipari is washed up and hasn't done anything significant in an entire decade. 2015 ruined him, just as we all knew it would at the time. There's no excuse for not winning a championship when you feel two NBA teams against somebody else's single college team.
Maybe Bo Ryan will give call his balls back, someday.
Could be an overreaction but seems like he’ll make some all nba teams. Best player in this draft and frankly Atl should’ve traded Trae and drafted him
Kentucky may have the highest number of quality guards in the NBA.
His coach at Kentucky held him back while catering to big name 5 star recruit's.
Houston are going to be a problem. I know it's summer league but if I was a brand new NBA fan I'd think that if Houston only had Reed Sheppard and Cam Whitmore they'd have a big future in the league... But they also have Green, Sengun, Thompson, Jabari and Eason. Am I missing anyone? Just an embarrassment of riches. They've murdered the draft the last few years. They cant possibly all stay though so who does is going to be interesting. Also as an OKC fan I hope Presi is watching when some of these guys are in the final year of their rookie deals because they might be available.
And after his career low 15 he now has his third game with 20 or more points
JJ Redick Jr.
I see a modern John Stockton and a hiding Jason Williams in him 😊🎉😂 Good luck Reed!
His shot looks like Desmond Bane’s but a little quicker.
See a lot of Austin reeves in him
Mark Price Game on offense
Sheppard has had A LOT of his floaters drop in the summer league...
Hes not going to be nearly as efficient come the regular season and hel be attacked in isos A LOT defensively
WE??? Nah fam, I knew he was this good
Second coming of Jerry West. Rockets are going to be tough.
With Reed coming off the bench most of the his career really costed him being the first pick in the draft. Vanilla curry
John Stockton reborn.
no thank YOU alex!!!
He should start idc
I think you're hedging on Sheppard too much! There's plenty of athleticism in the NCAA so his midrange shooting will almost certainly translate flawlessly. Why is this so important? It's what marks you out as an NBA-level creator and ball handler. Okay you can handle, you can shoot threes, you finish well enough at the rim, but what do you do in the middle? Since his looks are based on pace and technique, he'll get the same looks in the NBA. Plus, logo range and shooting 51% from 3? That is outlier behavior. Looking at him now, we are in a Steph Curry-lite situation, where teams were unwilling to draft him solely because of his size, compounded by his low usage rate making him feel like an unknown quantity. But seriously, look at that release! It's shades of Grayson Allen and Malcolm Brogdan, super tight and consistent at all ranges. Any teams not called the Hawks (who already have an undersized pg) are going to regret having passed on him. And maybe even the Hawks!
For real, the Rockets got a great steal, and he might even be able to help bridge the gap between Jalen Green and Sengun.
Cal must not read these numbers. If he did Shepard would been starting. With Rob.
Hawks fans regretting taking Sarr over him now? 😅
Next Stockton but better
Is he better than Herro, both from Kentucky
This guy is a white version of curry
The next Chris Paul.
He very rarely got to start. That was his coachs' fault.
Is Shepard is enough to get KD 🤔🤔
And DA Cal, never started him or Rob at UK. That is why Cal is at 💩Arkansas now along with several other reasons!
Better handles Asutin Reaves? Even wears #15
❤
I remember Jeremy lamb going off in summer league with the rockets now he a non factor
Do you remember Jeremy Lamb doing this many things well? Or just scoring?
Jalen green might be in trouble
Him and FVV are definitely getting moved for another quality wing, amen and reed are the future backcourt
Just shows how bad of a coach calipari is. It's obvious he should have been running point. He would still be in Kentucky if he did that
Obligatory kentucky guard comment
Point guard Kevin Martin
A more athletic Jeff Hornacek.
Two top 10 NBA picks, Calipari could not win a first round NCAA game. Calipari wasted "a lot" of talent while at Kentucky.
He's not better than we thought. Sheppard was the third overall draft pick. He is the third best player in the entire draft, supposedly right? And first American player pick.
MANY thought he was drafted too high.
The bot comments😂

His game kind of has similarities with jimmer fraddette hope he doesn't end like that.

let's not over hype the guy. You gonna start seeing teams throwing double team and trapping him like past couple of games. Not to mention being more physical with him
You start double-teaming him, and it's a slam fest for Green, Whitmore, Thompson, Eason, and Sengun.
white basketball players are always sooooo hyped in the US lmao it's crazy, all we hear about is Copper Flagg and Reed Sheppard
Is Bronnie James white?

Sheppard in college reminded me a lot of when Devin Booker was at Kentucky. Like Sheppard, Booker often didn't start & didn't get a ton of minutes every game yet was still effective. Their game is similar as well, obviously Booker is older with alot more development but in a couple seasons I think Sheppard can be at a level similar to Devin Booker's.
Here's hoping he's our future starting PG for the Houston Rockets
