I own one of these guitars and it is SWEET. Upgraded the tuners to locking Kluson's and it is the sweetest 335-ish guitar I've ever played...now if I could only play like this guy :/
Very lovely playing. Lovely guitar and the price is a no-brainer. I have a es335vos re-issue, I'm not swapping but dollars - and I looked a long time for it. I wouldn't cry if I got that Ibanez for Christmas.
I recently got an AS103 in Vintage Sunburst. I traded in an AS120 for it. I immediately upgraded the pickups to a Seymour Duncan Antiquity in the neck and a Gibson 57 Classic Plus in the bridge, and upgraded the pots and caps to switchcraft/orange drop. Now I have a killer instrument Both Ibanez's are excellent instruments anyway - the best budget 335 clones out there by far. Epiphones don't even compare. I have owned a beautiful Gibson 335 (as well as a couple of 135's and a Les Paul Florentine Plus) so I have a baseline for comparison. The Ibanez's are very close. Very, very close indeed. I almost cried when I had to sell my 335, but now I am made whole. I no longer lust after a 335. I've had one, and I know that the 103 is 95% of a 335 for 25% of the price. No brainer. The fretwork is even better. Some people cork-sniff that they are made in China. Well, iPhones are made in China too. No regrets, and your tone is mainly in your fingers anyhow.
Julian horovita I totally agree Julian, if you give the Chinese a $100 they'll make you a cheap guitar HOWEVER give them $600 and they'll make you a mind blowing guitar, a guitar if made in the US or UK would cost over 2 grand. That's why I just ordered my NEW IBANEZ AS93 New Stock with Super Custom 58 pickups £449 or $600.
Don’t you think that the maple 103 sounds brighter and flatter than the original 335s? Have you fixed it with the humbucker replacement or this is the overall character of the guitar?
@@b10buzz Definitely much brighter with less oomph than a 335. I've been through all manner of 335 substitutes since I wrote this comment 6 years ago (including a couple Gibson 335's, a Collings, and a couple vintage Ibanez AS-200's). Nothing sounds like a Gibson 335, which is why that is what I have now - with Throbak pickups.
I have the same guitar,(colour also same), and I love mine to bits! Just doesn't sound as beautiful as yours! Of course, different skippers at the helm!!! Beautifully demo-ed Greg, as always!!! You are the best there is!!!
Outstanding playing as always. Instant recognition. I have this guitar and am continually impressed with it's playability, range of tones, balance and build quality. I hate to acknowledge it, but the 103 rivals a Historic Shop LP for both sound and build. All I'm changing is the pickguard. This one just doesn't do it for me. Making one in rosewood.
I JUST BOUGHT ONETO ADD TO MY COLLECTION. I HAVE FOREVER A GIBSON MAN ELECTRIC AND ACOUSTIC AND FENDER TELE USA HOTROD. HOWEVER, WHEN I PLAYED THIS BEAUTIFUL GUITAR IT PLAYED AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS.I I AM IMPRESEED.BESIDES I GOT A GREAT DEAL ON IT. I WAS GOING TO DO A RE-SALE BUT DECIDED TO KEEP IT
I'm learning the guitar, fairly new to the instrument and theory is still a bridge being crossed. I was wondering if anyone can help me by telling me what he's playing here (meaning not WHAT he's playing but the theory behind it - is he noodling in a scale, playing a series of blues riffs...?). What's the structure of this, and how might I go about approaching playing something like this? Greg, excellent job, I really enjoyed that. I have an AS83 and I love it. How do these two guitars compare?
Learn the pentatonic scale! It has 5 "positions", basically meaning where you are on the fretboard at any given time. One you learn the first position, you know all of the "legal" notes between frets 5 and 8. Then, you can learn the second position and you know all the notes between frets 8 and 11. What ever the bass note (lowest note in the scale) of the first position is is the key you're in. Look up some slow blues backing tracks here on TH-cam, find the note on the E string that corresponds to the key it's in, and just noodle around with the first position. Learn more positions until you can go up and down the whole fretboard.
+Ryan Blumenow locker199601 gave great advice. Another thing to note is that using the looper, he recorded a nice little rhythm part that the looper just repeats over and over while he plays blues (based on the pentatonic scale) on top of it. Watch for the part where he steps on the looper, plays the rhythm part, and steps on the looper again to start the loop playback. If you don't have a looper, you can just play the same phrase for five or ten minutes into any kind of recorder (or Audacity on your computer). Then play the recording back while you improvise over it using the notes of the pentatonic scale. It's great practice and great fun! BTW, I have an Ibanez AS 103 NT just like the one he is playing. It is a semi-hollow with a solid maple block through the body under the pickups; It is a BEAUTIFUL guitar very similar to a Gibson ES 335, but much less expensive. I LOVE mine; It;s one of my favorites! Best of luck. Your are asking the right questions and moving in the right direction. Cheers!
Hey Greg, Could you possibly link the guitars on the vid descriptions, because your site is quite hard to navigate. Other than that GREAT guitar and video!
Dear Greg Can u please tell me where you got your teddy bear mic stand is it a reissue teddy or is it original.I know a guy who has a vintage bear and it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as yours. Also can we have a close up shot of your DVD collection it's nice to see what others watch in their spare time. but seriously nice demo once again dude have a rockin' day gilly zoom

Gilly.. I heard there's a guy with one of those teddys for sale-but he's down in South America and doesn't have a phone. And there's a lady in Canada that's making them from scratch with stuffing 'just like the originals' -but you never know. A guy told me that he heard one of her Canadian ones at a gig and it seemed right during the first set, but then it got a little dirty and fuzzy...so nobody's really sure. I wish I could help ya out.
This Greg has a very strange way of playing. In his videos he is allways muting the strings natural sustain very quickly, so we never hear the guitars real sound to the end. Not very good playing in my opinion.
I have one . Real sweet guitar. It is definitely a keeper

I wished this guy had a show...playing all the jazz sounds....just love to listen to this guy pick that guitar...wished I had his rhythm and style...

Hey, I LOVE your vids, seriously. So many guitars, sounds, licks, fun, and all as tasteful as can be. Great stuff.
I own one of these too. My favorite guitar. Mine's a 2006. Great sound and great build quality.
I have one. For me one of the best guitars for the money. I have kept her over other more expensive guitars because of the reliability and sound.

Pretty, pretty, pretty. I have a '95 AS-120 (Cort built w/ S-50s). I want one of these, too, now.

Perfect for vibroverb...or are all guitars? NICE listen...
What would a mint one go for? Is 750 overpriced in CAD?
Great demo man, that guitar is gorgeous! Is that the stock tail piece?
fsant80 yes it is
Hey Greg, Could you possibly link the guitars on the vid descriptions, because your site is quite hard to navigate. Other than that GREAT guitar and video!
Greeeeeat guitar.....
Where can I get one!!!!
Greg- Nice clip. I watch a lot of your videos.
How does this AS 103 compare in build quality and tone to an ES 335?
Dear Greg

Pedal test? Guitar test?
How much?
fab fab fab
@rvgilder That's what I tried to convince him of years ago...
I have this EXACT guitar, I'll never sell it, bought it new. Its the easiest playing guitar Ive ever played.
buy this, you'll still lust after a 335
why do you wanna know who I am

Uh, OK. Some players use sustain to crutch slow hands. For a player as good nd complex as Greg is, too much sustain just gets in the way.
