My heart pounding with 00:26 seconds left on the clock and John pipes in "I know many of you are freaking out right now." Yes, yes we are.

I saw this game live John! It was an intense back and forth game and definitely a nail-biter for both sides! A draw seems like a harmonious result for such a wild game.

Right hand to God I was sitting here watching with my wife trying to figure out what was wrong with 19…Kf6 during the game Haha glad I wasn’t crazy this one time

I noticed this too, I figured moving the king up the board is considered a no-no. Watching the analysis now.

    LET'S GOOOOOO!!!! :)
Edit: WOWWWWW, what a game. I always cheer for you John but for some reason in this particular game I was so happy to see him sacrifice both the bishop to allow his queen to infiltrate and his rook. Wow, what a game!! Time for analysis!

I saw this on your Lichess history (as a ~1000 rating rapid player who's been sticking to 1. e4 e5 while improving my tactics it drew my attention) and can't wait to see this one play out/hear the analysis!

Hi John, just wanted to say I found your videos a few weeks ago and you’re the first person who I’ve ever been able to really learn and improve from watching videos. I figured I would drop a comment to say thank you!

John, I know you don't really like being thrown into the deep end with some of these crazy positions, but it is very valuable seeing ">2000" players calculate these lines, and understanding what engine tactics "should" be seen at this level. Appreciate this one.

MAN MAN MAN, time for another JB classic. Looking forward to dozing off to the deep analysis, transcending into a dream where I am on the 3rd possible line, waking up and finishing the video!

Super excited to see this line come up. In his 1.e4 book, John Emms gives 2...c6 as the 'critical test' of the Bishop's Opening, where black immediately aims to stake a claim in the centre, and indeed it is annoying for White to face, as you have to abondon any f4 ideas in favour of shoring up your centre...
If you go into the 2...Nc6 and Nf6 lines, Emms gives Bb4 as the best try for Black, rather than Bc5... e.g., (via a different move order) 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d3 Nc6 4. Nc3 Bb4, which pins the White knight and prepares a freeing d5 advance and again makes it difficult for White to consider a quick f4...
As for the early Ng4 move you were considering on move 6, you were right not to play it, as the reply Ng5 can lead to very problematic positions for Black, but also the simple 7. Qe2 gives White a 'substantial advantage' according to Emms.
Really interesting game and really well negotiated as Black if you're not using to playing the line, as you can be sure your opponent was booked up. This is why I love the Bishop's Opening - it possesses some very rich and exciting lines and is often very understudied by opponents, many of whom at the lower levels just presume it transposes into the Italian Game...

"Maybe someday I'll study this." On top of lines already memorized which must be periodically reviewed to avoid hazy recollection. Sir Arthur's character Sherlock Holmes opined that the human mind could only hold so much; beyond a certain point something must be "erased" to make room for new stuff. Sounds like he anticipated hard drives.

This Chess game was just as exciting as watching wrestling haha! Just a champion and his challenger bustin out their moves over the board! Those spectators behind the announcer's table off to the left should be careful. Sometimes pieces fly!

Wow i considered always best moves, Bd4, Ng3 also, Be3 to exchange bishops and removing the only whites compensations(bishop pair) morover disturbing doag as you mentioned and finally Kf6 at the end looked pretty natiral to me... just controling E6 to avoid queens infiltration.

John, when you say 'I should've known the hard theory...' Please don't :) It's really important to hear your ongoing thought process, and not just 'next move is X because I know the line'. Good game, thanks a lot!

Kf6! Was wondering about that during the game, looks risky but keeps the rooks connected. I thought white might try d4 in reply and try to complicate with e5+ coming, but even then the rooks can probably cover. Nice game, more e4 e5! ;)

I seen qf6 right away and was confused in game why you didn't consider it. But that shows you what having >1 min on the clock does to your decision making.

I think another reason the knight gets bad when you capture the rook is that in a lot of scenarios if white lands an attack, even if that knight is never captured, it won't be able to contribute to the defense from so far off sides.

Kf6 looks like one of those moves GMs come up with, after 1 hour of thinking on what to do in their classical game. Completely counter intuitive move. :)

this game highlights perfectly why I gave up ever trying to learn e5 as a response to e4 lol I would need an hour per move to feel comfortable playing anything past move 12!
