You can also Alt-click anywhere on canvas when brush tool is selected to change the foreground color. Not sure what the "foreground color picker" hotkey is for.

Thanks for the handy tips! Is there something one can do tto optimize smart objects? I work via Illustrator and PS, and updating an illustration once edited in illustrator takes ages, it's actually worse now then before.
