    I love this kit Gary. My most prized possession for many years came from a visit to the Big and Expensive factory that maintained the Lancs for the BBMF with school. I loved the Lanc from a very young age and being in the Sea Cadets and being a bit savvy when they were teaching us about her, they let me put a pop rivet into the wing and gace me the bit that pops off to keep. That very year i went to an airshow with the cadets and "my lanc" as i came to think of her was in the air. I bought a bone china cup of the lanc from the airshow and kept the rivet inside. For nearly 20 years that rivet head was inside that cup until I had to move for work. I still have the cup, alas the rivet head was lost.

    Whilst I also enjoy the sort of detailed builds that can take a dozen episodes to go through, your 'get it done' approach is great and always enjoyable. It reminds me that the end result is as important as the process. There's room in the hobby for all different types of approaches and video styles.

    I find building everything onto the wings and then attach the wings last makes it easier to assemble the undercarridge parts.works for me.

    Very informative. The undercarriage assembly was concerned about assembly. I doing a grandslam conversion my biggest drama now is wheel well and undercarriage paint 😮

    HI, Gary More skill and detail on a fine kit , also an entertaining and inspirational video for anyone new to model making . You have travelled many miles since showing how to grow Radishes , lol . I finally finished my fourth Vulcan , they now hang from the ceiling in a strange sort of formation . My other modelling friend came round to take a look , and just as I thought I was about to hang up the Humbrol for good , today he dropped off a victor , a Valiant, and a small scale F6 Lightning . Turns out he has an attic room full of partly built kits , and won't have time to complete them . Thanks , Gary . Keep up the superb work .

    The tail gunner couldn't have his parachute in the turret with him, so if he had to bale out, had to turn the turret square on to the aircraft, open the doors behind him, enter the fuselage to get his parachute and put it on, get back in the turret, turn it 90 degrees so his back was to the open air, then fall out backwards. All while the aircraft was - probably - burning and/or out of control. Plus of course an attacking fighter knew if the tail gun was out of action they could attack low to the rear with impunity so that was the first target. Needless to say not as many survived as other positions.
    Unsure about the Upkeep mine's colour. Some suggest a rusty red, others a dark green. Munro's crew is known to have painted theirs black. Unsure about the stripes too.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just going by the Airfix cue for the colour and bands on the Upkeep. Yellow would indicate a live round, of course, and maybe the red a 'special' munition - I know the nukes had a broken red band for that reason.

    Bravo! 10,000 subs!
    I built the original Revell 1/72 Dambuster Lanc back when and it was a bear. Most of it was taped together while the glue dried -- and it wasn't Tamiya extra-thin, either.
    You're done this kit to suit the fine details and modern materials. Where you've used light gray on the undersurfacesI I think I would have used a light earth to reflect the dirt and mud blown back along the airframe while taxiing and taking off.
    In any event I agree that these aircraft weren't heavily used before their intended raid for good reason. I remember film of a Wallis bomb bouncing back up off the ocean and taking off the tail of its carrier B-25. Strange things happen at 50 feet.
    Congrats on a nice job highlighting a lovely kit. Hope your Photo Panther is going well. 😅

    Good result, Gary. I agree, there’s not much I didn’t like about my build of the Airfix Dambuster. I used an Eduard interior PE kit, but the only thing that can be seen is the flight engineer’s panel . And only if you squint. I enjoyed my build so much that I immediately bought the HK 1:48 standard Lancaster because I’ve never built one that wasn’t 617SQN. Great looking aircraft.

    She looks grand, Gary! It's a lovely kit, and well engineered where needed...though I remember a couple of places were a bit 'tricky' - undercarriage - as you mentioned, but then, most undercarriage on aircraft is tricky!! 😝
    Great job though; you got a lovely finish to a lovely old warbird! 👍

  • @ronaldbyrne3320
    @ronaldbyrne3320 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lovely work Gary. I caught myself holding my breath as you fiddled with the undercarriage and bomb. 😅 All in, a wonderful kit, waiting for the one of Gibson’s aircraft. For weathering powders I use artist’s pastel chalks (don’t get the waxy type) available from most art shops - there are many colours and shades. Just rub the chalks against some sandpaper to make little piles of the powder. And the chalks last a long time.

    Another lovely build, Gary. I recall making a Dambusters’ Lanc many years ago. I love the way you can say “I cocked this up and had to do it again…”; not many TH-cam modellers will do that which leaves viewers with the impression that absolutely everything goes super smoothly! Your approach is much more realistic.

      You use what works, Gary -- that's all part of learning. I've had good results with Pledge Future self-levelling floor polish, and it can be dulled with Tamiya flattening agent. I've never had it come back to bite me. Polyurethane can be very hot -- it's great for polycarbonate bodies because it bites right in.

    I must say I'm impressed how fast you complete all these models. Last time I built something of similar size (a P2V Neptune), it literally took me months to finish it. I always encounter some conundrum to solve and the work just stops for days. With Neptune, it was propellers. The blades were separate from the hub and I had to build a jig from cardboard to align them properly, pitch and all.

    I keep looking at the Lancaster I'm 1/72 to try. I've done a couple of 1/72 spitfire and hurricane so a beginner really, so is the Lancaster best left for the experienced builder?
    Also, have you found that sometimes you get a glossy finish even when using matte Cote or have I done something wrong.
    What's your preference, revell or airfix for more beginners
    Thanks
    Keep up the channel

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graham, if you're happy with the Spitfires and Hurricane you've made already the the Lancaster will be OK, but remember it's a step up in size and complexity. You could try something with a bit more interior detail but not as big as the Lancaster - say a Mosquito or a Beaufort.
      The results you get with matte finishes will depend on what you are using and how you put it on. Some bits (like decals) often need a bit more than other parts of the kit because they are naturally more gloss to begin with.
      If you are mainly interested in WW2 aircraft then I'd go with Airfix over Revell for beginners, but that really is a personal preference as they make far more things I'm interested in making!

    • @garys_stuff

      Yes indeed, the way of kits these days from many makers is to have frames with many variants but instructions for only one (and decals to match). Much cheaper than redesigning many frames. The Airfix Hurricane 1/48 is a good example, you can make the 'regular' Hurricane, the tropical Hurricane or the Sea Hurricane from the same box.
