Hello! I hope this gets answered. I have a very little business of selling ice in clear plastic using flowing groundwater. Now, this week i have notice this one particular ice bag coz it never froze even after 3 days inside the freezer. So a little back story, these ice i sell is made from groundwater and packed in an ice bag 3x16 in size. When i made this batch (around 20-25 as per the capacity of my freezer) 2 of it fell down on our floormatted concrete floor even before i was able to put them in the freezer. Now if it was damaged or if it burst i would not put them in the fridge as it will increase the production of fridge ice and will crowd the freezer. But it looked normal so along with its batch i put them in thr fridge. Note that i make and inventory, especially this week as i dont want to over produce since i am planning to defrost on saturday night so i just make enough good for 2-3 days. Thankfully the ice business is growing and this week after that batch i made another batches twice. And thats when i noticed that ice bag not freezing at all. By experience if you place newly made ice water bag next to an fully frozen one it melts the frozen ice so i always make a space in between fresh made ice bag and frozen ice bag. But this one ice bag didnt really freeze after a day. So the next day i tried freezing it on top on the frozen ice bag but still it was soft. Now. 3 days after i added 7 pcs for tomorrow and this ice bag is nowhere frozen. Its cold but not frozen at all. Im not even sure if this is one of the ice bags that fell. But this one is stubborn to freeze as hell. Im just really wondering if there's science behind as its the first time i've witnessed such stuff. Its a wonder coz if my fridge was the problem then no ice could have been made at all but all of its batch were sold as frozen ice and even the batch after it still froze in a span of 3-5 hrs. PS: im bad at chemistry. PSPS: you can make fun of your replies but please if someone here especially the creator can explain why is this happening then i am already very thankful! 😘
Here are some possible explanations and solutions for the issue with the ice bag not freezing: 1. Supercooling Effect Sometimes, water can remain in a liquid state below its freezing point, especially if the water is pure or undisturbed. This phenomenon is known as supercooling. Any disturbance (like a vibration or a tap) can cause it to freeze rapidly. Solution: Try gently tapping or shaking the ice bag after it’s been in the freezer for a while. You can also add a small impurity (like a grain of salt) to encourage ice crystallization. 2. Air Pockets or Improper Sealing If the bag contains too much air or isn’t sealed properly, it can prevent freezing due to insulation effects caused by trapped air. Solution: Ensure the bag is properly sealed and contains minimal air. Squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing the bag. 3. Freezer Temperature Fluctuations If the freezer’s temperature fluctuates or doesn’t maintain a consistent low temperature, some bags might fail to freeze. Solution: Check the freezer’s temperature settings. The ideal temperature for freezing water is 0°F (-18°C) or lower. Ensure the door seals are intact, and avoid frequent opening of the freezer. 4. Material or Thickness of the Ice Bag If the plastic of the bag is too thick or has insulating properties, it can delay the freezing process. Solution: Try using thinner plastic bags or a different type of plastic to see if the freezing issue persists. 5. Water Composition Groundwater may contain varying minerals and impurities that can lower the freezing point or affect crystallization. Solution: Consider using filtered or distilled water for making ice. This can reduce the chances of inconsistent freezing caused by impurities. 6. Overcrowding the Freezer Too many items in the freezer can obstruct airflow, making it harder to freeze new items effectively. Solution: Space out the bags to ensure proper airflow, and avoid overcrowding. Summary To resolve the issue, try: 1. Reducing air pockets in the bag. 2. Checking freezer temperature consistency. 3. Using filtered water. 4. Ensuring the freezer isn’t overcrowded. 5. Tapping the bag to counteract supercooling. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching. 🙂
