I lived in japan for 3-4 years, Kochi City, and later Kurume. The only people who ever got on the news as foreigners were Black people getting into fights, causing big issues, and stealing. If you're in Japan, and you steal something, you should have never traveled to japan in the first place. The idea that any country has to bend over backwards because of your race is pathetic. His brother was denied a visa because of other black people's "antics." (dood had to close his shop, a 2 story shoestore in downtown Kochi) for 2-3 weeks to go back to Nigeria and take care of the fallout from losing the Visa. In Japan it is considered rude and obnoxious to draw attention to oneself with odd behavior. While anime and jrpgs often feature wacky characters, the overwhelming majority of Japanese people are fairly reserved. However they can be very welcoming toward foreigners who behave calmly and show genuine interest in their culture.
I lived there for 5 years thanks to the military. This exactly. Learn the basic social rules about keeping to yourself, and they're the nicest people on the planet generally.
"While anime and jrpgs often feature wacky characters" I believe that this is the case because of their stricter culture, it would make sense.. though could be wrong.
Even in anime and JRPGs if you look at what the character generally are, they’re generally understated even in comparison to Tik Tokers. If they do anything wacky, it’s often for a really extreme reason (the world is at stake), and they generally don’t go bothering people in this way. In fact, this is the sort of thing where if an anime character had someone like this in the scene even the weirdest anime protagonists would probably still be weirded out by this. These people are more obnoxious than anime characters.

Well im not an American nor am I black or white, but one thing is for sure is its much harder to find white B-dancers than blacks . The reason why break dancers are not allowed is obviously because it cannot be performed in small cramped spaces and in Japan alot of spaces feel cramped, Japanese people are very reserved and the least likely to retaliate from this reprehensible behavior so the only way to get the message across is for the government to be as direct as possible. I’m Japanese. I'm angry that some foreign tourists don't respect Japanese culture😞 We are glad that people are interested in Japan, but we need to observe basic etiquette. To be honest, if things continue like this, I think Japanese people will start to have prejudices against foreign tourists. I'm not good at English, so I'm worried if I can get my point across to everyone…
I grew up in Japan. There are always spaces you can use to do almost anything you want, but one place you just cannot do anything you want is on public transport. I remember in the mid 90s there were signs to not use phones on the trains, which are still around today. Remember, Japan relies on agreed upon etiquette amongst all citizens and residents in Japan, and these rules are enforced.
@lucasross4007 You think a random well-meaning person in the far north can automatically control what everyone else does ? People like these are affected the most negatively by these behaviors.
The thing that upsets me about this is none of the people learned the culture. My dad was stationed in Japan while I was growing up so I spent a lot of time there learning the language and culture. Japanese people DO NOT like to be touched by strangers (rarely even friends) and they really value not being a burden or nuisance to society. That’s why when you get in their subway system you can damn near hear a pin drop. @Miggus7362 That isn't the point being made. The offended are as such due to projecting their own insecurities. The observation OP made lends credibility to the fact this isn't something motivated by the racial bigotry they are being accused of, and in fact it also lends credibility to the proverb, "When you point your finger there are three fingers pointing back at you." as it aptly applies to the accusers who were the ones actually behaving in an outrageous manner in the first place, and predictably following up that behavior with making outrageous accusations when called out on it.

@zumy1507 Personally I do not see that Japan's public manners and rules are strict, but simply rational; before, just a couple decades ago, in America and Europe this was called common sense, respect, literacy and common courtesy, which unfortunately have all been lost. On the contrary, close Japanese friends and students have confessed to me that they are saddened by how manners have relaxed in Japan, and how with each generation education in values and ethics has become more permissive or lax, due to bad parenting and the influence of the Internet. In their opinion, values, ethics, social customs and manners should be much stricter, and this is also true for the West. The sign is perfect, and these social media monsters take advantage of the kindness of ordinary people. They should pay serious consequences for their actions.
9:24 FWIW The blurred creatures are "Siamang gibbon" (フクロテナガザル). The text on the left side of the poster says: "Loud and happy Siamang gibbon, but please be quiet in the car" Another thing to note is that they are probably NOT being racist on purpose, but rather we Asian often use "monkey" to describe a person who is very loud and cause trouble. I used to be called monkey a lot when doing shenanigans when I was a kid lol. So please keep that in mind and don't look at it with too much sensitivity.
Cameras are the problem. in the old days, guys like this would get their ass kicked, but since there are cameras everywhere, THEY get in trouble for delivering justice.
No... it's not the cameras. In the old days these people would be taken care of and everyone KNEW it was happening and WANTED it to happen. It was the way things were done. Now not only is society not allowed to take care of things, but police aren't allowed to take care of things either. The results are very, very predictable. If you side with the antisocials and criminals, society rather quickly becomes intolerable.
Might actually surprise you that Japan has the term, "BIG BROTHER." Way before we did. They had camera's all over the place when I was stationed there in the 90's. You won't see any police and if something stupid happens suddenly they be all over the place. Cause they watch the cameras.
Japan is racist though, most countries are. America is certainly the least racist country on the planet. When you go somewhere like Japan, everyone is 99% the same race, ethnicity, and culture. If you are white, black, hispanic, etc, you will be rightly labeled as "different".
They are not racist its a homogenous society and country. you can't force multiculturalism onto a place that is not existing like this and has no history of doing so that is racist to them.
If you live in Japan long enough or work for any length of time as an ALT or other type of para educator you will know immediately that the school girls being harassed were Junior high school students. So their age is somewhere between 12 and 15 while a stranger gets uncomfortably close to them.

Even in anime and JRPGs if you look at what the character generally are, they’re generally understated even in comparison to Tik Tokers. If they do anything wacky, it’s often for a really extreme reason (the world is at stake), and they generally don’t go bothering people in this way.

Thanks Johnny, as a black man I can never enter Japan without prejudice again, if it wasn’t already bad before.
Actually, I think you can avoid this by signaling that you are simply not of that culture.
Wear a suit. Don't dance in the subway. Act like the Japanese around you. Distance yourself from "African american" culture.
Most People won't think you are part of this group, when you don't look and act like that group.
That people associate your skin color with that behavior is reasonable, but I don't think they believe that there is a causal relationship. It's a coincidence.
Why would they think that a orderly and polite, well dressed black man would be the same as these black men? Wouldn't it be easy to say that you ARE different, due to behavior and culture, despite your ethnicity being the same?
I'm German, and despite the fact that all central Europeans are "white", I would never let anyone group us together like that, because we are culturally very different. You should try and do the same.
We've been doing this for eons because we push it on others, there isn't a single thing stopping us from displaying socially acceptable behavior around people who aren't like us.
Japan leading by example, it might be your vacation spot but it's their HOME. Respect the country, you are a GUEST!!!
As a New Yorker, I actually never enjoyed the showtime inside the Subway cars...
Yea, it's mad annoying having to endure that after a long day of work
Yeah, I hated it when I lived there.
To answer Asmon's question; "Why let it happen?": Because we're not allowed to deck people for invading our personal space here. I'm not saying let us challenge each other at high noon in the streets or anything... but we certainly need a "Back the F Off Me" clause in our social contract. We should be allowed to lamp someone invading our personal bubble. I know, I know; "that isn't the answer, blah blah blah." Except when it is, and when it works--then, suddenly, it's a great answer.
I agree with you, foreigners should learn what boundaries are, instead of just going around mindlessly desecrating a culture.
As someone who lives in Japan, it’s customary to be silent on the trains. Don’t make sounds and disturb others. 空気を読む
Its not just that. Its pestering. Like, I'm cultured to leave people alone. Don't be a nuisance. Don't bother others.
@ very true! this ABSOLUTELY extends beyond trains. I was just making the point that in Japan it is Especially rude to make any kind of noise or distractions on trains.
It should me matter of common sense, not custom, all around world
My kind of country.
Only exception are the ojiichans that have had a few beers. They can get a little noisy. It's okay.
Everyone is having enough of them.

Pattern recognition is not racism
This has nothing to do with race but that won't stop you for taking this as an opportunity to be racist

Really suprised filthy frank/pink guy wasnt brought up about how he had a series where hed fake sezures in the streets of japan yell profanity and just plain asshole over multiple videos in japan about 10-15 years ago.
One of his stand out catch phrases/antics was running into an establishment then yelling HEY BAOSS, CAN I HAVA THA POOSAY PLAESE
A few issues with that, although I see where you're coming from.
He's Japanese (half but raised there). The vast majority of that content was in the US and I believe Australia. Some of it was in Japan but it was way turned down compared to his antics in the US. I'd have to find the videos again but if you watch you can instantly tell the difference
That sign presents an honest and straightforward message about who is causing the problem there in Japan.
And it should be that way.
1 guy and his friends?
the people being harassed in the subway video should sue the creator of the video. In Japanese law it's legal to film people in public BUT it is not legal to post/publish without the persons permission. This would be a civil court case. If you watch Japanese broadcast news this why they blur the faces of people in the background on the street. Many if not most Japanese citizens will do the same when posing on IG, FB, Tik Tok especially of children's faces.
Japan needs to take a hard stance on these creator tourists who are disturbing the cultural norms Japan has
I think it’d be epic if cell phones were confiscated!

In Japan, talking on phone in trains is enough to be considered bad manner. They won't tolerate odd acts or anything that gains attention.
It's a bad manner. I'm German and I can't stand that too. Also a phonecall is much to private to have it in public. Because only private stuff and people ever call me

@batboy555 not like it'll be hard, Japan has that messed up 99% guilty rate or whatever.
I am a foreigner and I also hate the street karting. I haven’t seen a single Japanese doing that. They are also so obnoxious driving around like they own the street. I even almost got run over because they don’t respect the traffic lights since they don’t want to get separated from the rest of the group.

Working too long hours can lead to depression and suicide, which is not good. Politeness is good, but Japan is a bit extreme, personal opinion.
