  • In this video I will show you how to disassemble, and reassemble a import dial caliper. I am not a professional, and am not in any way certified to do this, I just like to fix things, with that said, I hope you will take something good from this. Thanks for watching!

    Ray, I have the same caliper as you show in the video. At this point the only thing I don't know how to do is the setting of the backlash. It doesn't look like you have covered that step subsequently, nor could I find any other TH-cam that does cover it. Would you mind describing in words how to do it? Does the tension get set while the dial is removed from the rail, or does it get done once the dial is back in place? Thanks.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi dave, Yes i should have covered that step. With the caliper jaws clean and closed to zero, place the gear into the rack ten install the needle exact on zero. Set the backlash with the small leaf spring and you back in business!

    • @daveg7
      @daveg7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RaysGarage Hi Ray, thanks for the reply. I may need a bit more clarification though. Where is the small leaf spring located? Do you mean the copper bar under the two set screws, one with the "tit"? I've adjusted that one, and it doesn't help. I still can't get repeatability of zero position when I close the jaws. It varies by several thou on either side of zero. If it's not the copper bar, I'm afraid I don't know where the leaf spring is. Thanks again!

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daveg7 Hi Dave, Yes the copper bar is for setting drag for smooth jaw movement. If it's not repeating on zero first verify the needle is tight on the post, if that is ok it sounds like the little gear is slightly worn or wear on the rack. there is not a backlash setting on this style caliper that I know of.

    • @daveg7
      @daveg7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@RaysGarage Hi Ray, thanks for the reply. I decided I had to disassemble the dial movement to see if I could figure it out. And indeed I did - there is a spring tensioner on one of the two pinion gears, the one that's visible through the moon-shaped hole when you take the white dial face off. Took a while to determine how to establish the spring tension, but once I hit upon the method, it is easy. My caliper is back to working as it was before I dropped it :-( I took pictures, but there doesn't seem to be any way to post them here. I will describe as best I can. When reassembling, only slide the brass spacer bar (gib) back in part way - maybe 1/2" - at the jaws end. The idea is to force the pinion gear at the jaws end, and ONLY that pinion, into contact with the rack. Then you tilt the traveller so that the pinion gear farthest from the jaws is NOT in contact with the rack. While holding everything in this position, which can be done with one hand, place a tiny screwdriver into one of the holes of the gear that is visible through the moon-shaped hole (ref. 4:14 of the video). Use the bottom-most hole when the caliper is oriented as it is at 4:14. Pull the screwdriver in the counter-clockwise direction - you will feel the spring winding up. When the screwdriver reaches the other end of the moon hole, tilt the traveller back so that both pinion gears are now in contact with the rack. You can now remove the screwdriver from the hole. Slide the brass bar (gib) the rest of the way in, thus holding both pinion gears against the rack. You now have your tension. One other adjustment I had to make: the first time I did this, the sliding action of the traveller did not feel smooth at all - gritty and funky-sounding, as you experienced at 23:34. I eventually found that if I loosened the 3 screws that you are tightening at 22:40, you get some wiggle room. The problem was that whole dial unit was being held too tightly against the rack. I just backed off the dial unit a bit and re-tightened the 3 screws (and of course adjusted the gib setscrews) to get a smooth motion. Another small thing - it seems that you should drag the pointer counter-clockwise, not clockwise, when adjusting the pointer to the top of the dial (ref. 25:50). If you go clockwise, it feels like you are just unwinding the spring, and the pointer snaps back when you let go. Bottom line, now when the jaws of my caliper are opened and closed repeatedly, the pointer always returns to exactly 0 every time. Hope this helps someone else with the same dilemma.

    Thank you for putting this out! I have a pair that show inch and metric measurements that were way off on the zero. I could zero either the metric or the imperial but not both and neither would have the pointer pointing straight up. The other videos didn't help as they were for expensive units but yours did. Hi Ray
    Been fighting the worst flu of my life for the last 3 weeks, finally started feeling a bit better today so I did something other than lay on the couch. I had purchased a set of Mitutoyo Vernier calipers off E-Bay last year, they were used but cheap so I figured why not. When I received them the dial was pointing at 60 instead of 0 so I knew they had skipped a gear or worse. I tossed them in the drawer and they have languished there ever since. I was straightening some stuff out today and pulled them out, thinking today was the day to fix them or junk them. I remembered seeing a video on here about taking them apart but forgot it was yours. Everything was much the same except the Mitutoyo ones don't have a ring to hold the lens in place, it snaps into a groove on the front side of the knurled ring. After a good cleaning and a few dissembles and reassembles they are working like a charm now. I have the digital Mitutoyo calipers but wanted an old fashioned pair that was more forgiving for harsher environments. Thanks for the video!

    Ray, thanks a lot. My "shock proof" Midway (Franklin Arsenal) calipers, very similar to the one in your video, took a tumble onto concrete after years of use. The needle moved to about the 4 o'clock position. No other damage, it was still usable and repeatable, but I didn't like canting my head to read it. The needle is back to 12 o'clock, and with cleaning the lens it is very easy to read again, with some glasses over my 50 something year old eyes, of course. I just figured the needle only went on the stem one way like a clock hand, and couldn't be turned. Thanks again!

    Thanks so much for this. I acquired someone else's damaged calipers (I'm believing damaged teeth, as with yours) and took it apart to clean it. I had no clue how to get the dial off (now I know), but cleaned it to the best of my ability. When I went to put the shim back, I noticed the hole. "What's this for??" I also noticed the nipple on one of the set screws. Never did put two and two together. Thanks again for this instructional vid.

    One thing to do before tightening the dial movement on the caliper is to adjust the gear lash between the rail gears and gear rail. There's play in the screw holes. With mine I had to put pressure on the dial down towards the caliper jaws as I tightened the dial screws. First time I tightened it it made that fine clicking sound because the gears were too much against the gear rail. Just a little tip so it operates smoothly and lasts longer. If there's too much lash it becomes inaccurate. I finally got it set so it's within .001" accurate. I also had like a quarter drop of oil on the tip of a screw driver I touched any shaft/bushings with. I treat mine like a Rolex. Those your suppose to take in once every few years for a cleaning and lube.

    Watchmakers use a technique similar to your two-screwdriver method for removing the hands--they have two little flat pry bars they use. One key difference: watchmakers will cover the dial with a thin poly bag and pry the hands through the plastic--this protects the dial. Cool video!

    Very interesting and informative. I have several suggestions as I work with models and other very small things.
    1. Use a light or white soft cloth under the item to help see and also catch falling parts. An old sheet, pillow case, or even a tee shirt. Just make sure it is large enough.
    2. I have a Screw-Sticker to hold the small screws under the head to start them. These tools come in several sizes, I have a couple or three. One is about two feet long. I think it came from Harbor Freight. The small one I got to work on HO model trains.
    3. Micro Mark has some tweezers with cupped ends which would be good for holding small things too.
    I am probably forgetting something but oh well. Good day to you, sir. Roy

    Hey Bro, thanks for watching! To adjust the backlash is easy. Just make sure the little tit of the one set screw is locked in the brass piece with the hole. Then adjust the two set screws equally untill you like the feel, (not too tight, and not too loose). If you still have slop, it's possible one of the two brass gears has a missing tooth, if so find me a replacment too. Please let me know your results! Thanks, Ray C.

    Great work. If anyone has the Starrett, they are easier than the imports to tare down. If you have a Starrett that is jambing up, or will only go one direction (closes easily, but will not open) there are 2 screws inside that appear to be some kind of preload or slack adjustment. There is a small cutaway in the housing to access these screws once you disassemble the caliper slightly. Easy peasy. :)

    I hate to sound negative but did you not forget to tension the backlash eliminating spring when you put the mechanism back? There should be some tension between the two drive gears. Another source of glass is your local watch repairer, they supply them in a great variety of sizes, but costs can be variable.

    The thumbwheel fell off on mine. Fowler was nice enough to send me a new one but the one they sent me seems too big. It's like there is a missing peice in there. I don't understand. Like even on yours the thumb wheel has that groove the axle goes in but seems like the axle sits way off of pressing against the rail. Any ideas?

    • @forknowledge6959
      @forknowledge6959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the thumbwheel they sent me was too big. The axle is too long and the axle goes right down against the rail instead of the edges of the wheel sandwiching the rail. I would ask fowler to send me another but they were so nice sending me this one for free already. The rail is .126" and the axle of the thumbwheel they sent me is .149" wide.

    • @RaysGarage

      For School Sounds like you were sent the incorrect thumb wheel, it should fix the axle and just touch the scal for a smooth movement.

    I was a machinist back from 1998 to 2003, still had my cheap ENCO 30.00 calipers and they are still .0005 accurate, then, a chip got in there and they would no longer work. Dissembled them as show here but my dial hand was stuck fast. Finally got it to pop free but it vanished into the carpet in my work room/office. I know where it should be but just cant find it. Supper bummed. Probably need to get a magnet and run it around the room before I buy another pair.

    That missing gear tooth makes the vernier unusable - imagine living with that sound (and inaccuracy) , while trying to take a measurement. A couple of days ago, I dropped my Chinese (but very well made I thought) dial vernier. I picked it up, saw the needle was off by maybe 5 degrees . Slid it back to zero - same result, of course. I then proceeded to trash it, which I did pretty well; smashed the pieces, looked for the bits remaining, smashed them too. If only I had seen this vid, perhaps I could have saved it. I don't think I broke a tooth by dropping it , probably I just jarred the pinion gear(s) out of alignment. Anyway, that's gonna be the last Chinese measuring tool I buy - from now on, I'm looking for Japanese or American tools.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ant Mallett Hi Ant,
      I know the feeling, and am sure you got great pleasure in smashing that caliper, great story! I agree, cheap China calipers just don't belong in the shop but, don't drop that Mitutoyo or Starrett caliper after spending 100+$! I have found for everyday use the Shars or Horrible Freight calipers work pretty good for under 20$, keep the good expensive set for more accurate work.
      Thanks for tuning in!

      Ray

      Is it possible the knurls on the side of the bezel are worn off?

    • @DSCKy
      @DSCKy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a plastic piece over the screw... I think it may be broken. It does not touch the bezel knurls? Do they lock externally on the knurls or internally like a set screw?

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DSCKy The bezel locks externally, you can replace the broken piece with a small washer that reaches the bezel from the center of the set screw for now until you get a replacement.

    Sadly Mitutoyo USA has no parts for older tools, and the company refuses to make more. my early 80s 12" 515 series
    is junk because of one tiny part that broke. They offered me a trade-in on a new one, at a final price higher than I can buy a new one at the tooling store. Stupid. Cheapest fix will be to buy a used 4" or 6" on enay that still works, and kill it to get doner parts for the 12".

    how does the dial read the measurement or show the distance on the ruler? Can you explain? :)

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A small gear on the back of the dial meshes with a rack mounted to the scale, so as you open and close the jaw the dial gear rides on the rack giving you your measurements.
