The original 1937 NYC Hudson's dies were made in Italy. At that time, Italians were known to be master die makers and Joshua Lionel Cowen wanted the best. In 1990-91, when Lionel decided to re-issue this locomotive (something that had been talked about all through the 1970's and 80's) the bolier die had been used so much by the original company that it was worn out and a lot of the detailing was no longer clean. The Gray hudson #785 with spoked drivers (circa 1985) is the last hudson built using the original die for the locomotive. Lionel had a new boiler die made (and this time it was made here in the USA) so this new Hudson is actually more American made than is the original!!! The casting over the cab windows is a bit different than the original and that is because of an attempt to be even more accurate. The tender however is made using the original 1937 dies as the scale tender was not made very much except for the full scale model from 1937-1941. All during the 50's and 60's and then during the 1980's, Lionel did not use these dies for the various Hudsons they were re-issuing or building so the original dies were in excellebnt shape. Note the 'dent' on the back of the tender on the engineer's side on the 1991 model, that same dent is on the original prewar models as well as it was in the original dies making them share a family trait!! I do wish that this model would have had the middle drivers flanged like the original 700E. The pilot truck uses under sized wheels so the truck can come up to and even under the steam chests going around a sharp curve. Lionel had made up some replacement trucks with scale sized wheels as many collectors complained about the smaller wheels on an otherwise scale beauty. I do own a 1937 700E and I used to own one of these. Sitting side by side, the new model has nothing to be ashamed of, it is so well made. They raised the cowcatcher in the front as the original was lower (more scal height) and would ocassionally dip down and touch the middle rail causing a short. I think that while raising it to avoid a short, they didn't have to raise it quite that high. They did it to match the 773's from 1950 and 1964-66 as well of course as their newer reincarnations during the 1980's. When I had mine, I always kept the tender unplugged from my locomotive because the original did not have sound and for some reason, I didn't want this one to make sounds either. This 1990 model of the hudson is completely American built, nothing from overseas. --------Now I want to go out and buy another one!!!

@@goldenmanuever1176 Yep, the 785 was the last locomotive cast out of the original, well-worn dies. If you have a 785, examine it closely and the die flaws will become evident. I did a test one time with my 700E, I wanted to see if it could take a sharper curvature than 072, it did. It could actually take an 054 but it didn't look good doing it as that would not have been a very realistic curve. I run my 700E on either original Lionel prewar T-Rail track or, MTH's scale trax. The old Hudson actually looks better on MTH's track because of the scale sized, low profile rails. However, with that knowledge, I now know that Lionel, MTH or 3rd Rail could build say the Allegheny using fully flanged scale wheels for 072 or wider and it would work. Each engine on an Allegheny, like the Hudson uses three axils but on the Allegheny, since the wheels are considerably smaller than those of the Hudson the axils are placed closer together which, as you can tell, will allow it to navigate 072 with no problem. No binding at all. Personally, no large articulated locomotive should be navigating curves sharper than 096 (and that's tight!!). But I digress, that is my opinion. Of course this is for realism, but so is the desire to complete these beautiful scale models with scale wheels. MTH did this by offering scale wheels or high rail wheels on many of their models. There is a video clip on youtube showing an MTH Big Boy outfitted by it's owner with all scale wheels (but still 3-rail operation) and it took all of the 072 curves easily (my complaint is that the Big Boy just don't look good doing it as the overhang is ridiculous looking.) I hear you about seeing a scale sized Lionel Hudson ripping around toy tubular tracks But I think Lionel could have at least made the Hudson available with either all scale wheels or high-rail wheels and let the buyer decide. As for me, I like running my scale models at scale speeds, even my old 700E or 763E's I don't like running trains unrealistically fast because I don't want to wreck one. I did not know that Lionel however, made a scale front to accomodate the scale pilot wheels. I had this locomotive since 1991 and I did purchase the scale pilot wheels for it but the 'cow catcher' remained higher than my prewar models. I'm watching for a 1950 model 773 now.

This locomotive was called the "1-700E when it came out. I got mine back then. There was also the option to get it with a wooden base, section of track and a full plexiglass case. I understand that the case and wood board are very hard to find today. There was also included a scale coupler that you can switch out in the much oversized Lionel knuckle.
Lionel offered remakes of the 4 scale freight cars and a B-6 switcher at the same time. They also reproduced the maroon Railchief passener set. This was a lot like the prewar Hiawatha or M-10000 cars with vestibule connectors all done in maroon.

Good video Sid. I'd like to mention a few thing's that people may not know. For the numbering on the 1990 700e, Lionel wanted to number it for their 90th anniversary (5390). But they realized that there wasn't a J1e Hudson that was numbered 5390. So 5340 was chosen. However, I just came across that there was a J1d Hudson that was renumbered to 5390. I may have discussed this with and some others. Lastly 5344 got re-streamlined the look like a Dreyfuss Hudson after it was the Commodore Vanderbilt. Plus 5344 got or was equipped with Timken roller bearings.

Great video but you forgot one Hudson, the 1950 773 Hudson, the 50th anniversary of Lionel being in business. That was the 773 Anniversary Hudson. Only made for that year 1950 then it was brought back into production in 1964 to 1966. The difference between the 1950 and 1964 is the steam chest guide bar. The 1950 had the guide bar and the 1964 did not. Also the number 773 in 1950 was silver heat stamped, the 1964 was white heat stamped and thicker. And the tenders were different as well. The 1950 Hudson is the second holy grail of the Hudson very sought after engine after the 700e do to the 773 of 1950 was only made for that year. And at the time 1950 the anniversary version was $49.95. Imagine dishing out 50 buck in 1950 for a toy train. For those that can’t get the 700e they will search for the 1950 773 Hudson. You may ask how do I know I have the 1950 773 check out my TH-cam channel. Cheers and keep up the good videos.

The only thing I have a problem with is the chuffing sound. Yours only chuffs once per wheel revolution instead of the prototypical 4 times. Many only chuff twice and I can live with that. But one time per revolution is just odd. But it was first generation sound. Still better than the "mighty sound if steam .
