  • In this video, we show you how to set up Tesla's 'Time Based Control' feature, on the Tesla Powerwall 2. This lets your Powerwall smartly charge and discharge, saving you even more money.

Thank you for your clear explanation of how to set up time based control. It is working well for me; our last monthly bill was -$160 using Amber in NSW Australia. Is there an way to reduce the maximum discharge rate of the Powerwall 2 from 5kW to say 4kW so that I can feed into the grid for longer during Peak periods and supply the house with about 0.5kW?

Hi, I don't think there is a way to do that. However I think the algorithm should take this into account and vary the charge and discharge rate.

I was looking for a similar solution, I'm exported limited to 5kW and have an 8kW inverter, I don't have any time of day price changes. So ideally the powerwall would charge slower for longer so that I can export more. My solution was to set from 5am to 10am as peak and the rest off peak with no grid charging.
Now when the sun rises, rather than charging the Powerwall all power generated is exported and the house is still being feed off the battery, unless the battery drops to the backup reserve level at which point the solar powers the house and still exports the excess. Then at 10am when generation is over 5kW, it starts charging the battery at 5kW and any excess can still be exported. By early afternoon when the battery is full, I often turn on the AC which use the excess above the 5kW I'm allowed to export. I've found this to be the best solution, however I'm always micromanaging the system as I'll change the reserve of even change to "self powered" for the day if I don't think the sun will come out.
