    Griff was my favorites among many, met him at Carlos 2 and Vanguard, true gentleman. Cried the day Phil Schapp did his memorial

    “This tune is also on the Jazzland LP “Tough Tenors” Brilliant record with some fine solos by Junior Mance. This is a very fast blues.

    Way to go with this one, Bob! I appreciate your taste in music, especially here with Jaws and Griff, two of the greatest tenor saxophonists of all time.
    How the hell could anyone dislike this???
    Anyway......so much for ignorance. This is the shit!!!! PERIOD!!!!!
    So much tone and swing and beat and feeling and soul!!!
    I went to school at Rutgers with the pianist here, Harry Pickens. Harry is a wonderful guy and a fantastic pianist. I love this clip, Bob. Thanks for posting this.

    What I always loved was Johnny Griffin's reaction to what his co-musicians laid down. If he thought it was worthy I took it to the bank!

    These guys and all those jazzbos were creating the True Holy Music. Neva mind Rome, Jerusalem, or Jedda. This is the stuff nobody died for. Just smiling and shakin' the booty. Yowza

    These guys must have never put their horns down for decades. except to sleep and whatnot.
    Do young people (poor bastards) know what this kind of mastery and soul and earthy sophistication is even like?

    Does anyone "growl" on tenor anymore like Jaws did? Well, maybe James Carter and a couple of others, but it's always great to hear some rough, tough house rockin' tenor.Anybody--whose doin' it these days??

    @zajj79 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! THANK YOU! i'd love to see more solo stuff of both Lockjaw and Griffin, as well as more duet recordings. These guys are amonst the greatest saxophonists; their whole approach to a song is what jazz is all about...I want to get a rare album they did together playing Monk tunes. The Fox also did an amzazing ballad album with Paul Gonsalves, another legend...

    Up!!! Freakin' Burnin...! I feel that Kenny Garrett and Joe Henderson listened to this before recording 'Computer G' for KG's "Black Hope" CD.

      Also noticed a slight similarity to Miles Davis Sextet classic live recordings from 1959 that came out in that 'The '59 Sessions' album, there's a version of 'Straight No Chaser' w/ burning solos by all involved (including Miles and Bill Evans) but Trane and especially Cannonballl totally kill it. This here is even faster, but the spirit and feel is the same, up tempo Blues

    The Griffin sat in with Dex at the Carnegie Hall concert. It's a live CD and it'ss really great. They play what Dex calls "Some European Soul Tenor".

    They didn't call Griffin "The Little Giant" for nothin'. Check out his recordings with Thelonius Monk. His stop courses are out of this world.

    As I read it Jaws was to become a drummer but switched to a horn so he could be up front in the band and get more women! Also he wanted to become a jazz musician because they always got up late in the day!

    @colbert2422 I'd like to get the album Charlie Ventura plays on with Krupa, John Bunch on piano, Nabil Totah (sp?) on bass. They do "Undecided," Flyin' Home," "Tickle Toe." It's so cool and soulful. Familiar? I loved it for years as a young kid and lost track of it moving around, somehow.
