Talk about the need for an adaptive mindset and bringing unique skills to the table, use the "3-wheel" test in SFAS as an example, you know what i'm talking about.
A video about getting to your first team would be awesome! I know you briefly mentioned it already, but it would be pretty cool to hear how you dealt with any insecurities of being the fng and how you eventually got to the place where you felt like you "belonged". I feel like the mental aspect is huge and I've never seen anyone specifically address this before
I was wondering if you could talk about females going into 18d! i’m a sophomore in high school and am super interested in doing 18d but nobody has said anything about females doing that or going into any mos, so could u please make a video covering it?
I love the treadmill personally. During my career I strictly always only trained on a treadmill for running and rucking unless it was some mandatory military pt. But it worked for me, consistently ran my two miler in the 12s now that I’m old and out I’m in the 14s though. The thing I like about the treadmill is you set the speed and the only way you can slow down is if you hit that button or step off, out in a regular run or ruck you may slow down without realizing it until it’s too late
Hey Buck, thanks for all your videos. I've been binge watching your videos and I've decided to enlist under an 18x in January of next year. You, Zack Huges, and Mike Glover are all a huge inspiration. I'll be going in at 28yo with two little kids, but I know I gotta do it. Thanks again!!
I’m not an expert by any means, but one of the consistent lessons I’ve learned from 18A, Stew Smith, etc is that there’s a large benefit (mentally and physically) to training in non-ideal or uncomfortable settings/circumstances. Soft muddy trails, rain or heat, crappy rucksack, all that suck helps in the long run. At the very least, you can say you overcame a new challenge.
I'm 46, prior service Navy (01-11). I've been watching you and @grittysoldier along with listening to David Goggins (who I swear has been the voice in my head since I was 10) and being in an office all day and then hours of traffic two ways (L.A. Life) has forced me to make adjustments to be able to get back in shape. Long story short, your video on rucking on a treadmill has made me bite the bullet on getting an underdesk treadmill for my office and I'm going to start rucking on my lunch hour. Thanks for all your videos and I'm digging your video reviews too. Hoo-ah!
Buck, I’d like to see you attempt the Norwegian mountain SF ruck test. It’s conducted on a treadmill that increases in steepness every so often and is done in full BDU/OCP with a rifle in hand, no sling obviously. It’d be great content!
Living in Idaho the weather sucks 8-9 months outta the year so I have done almost all my run/ruck training on a treadmill. This gives me some relief that I’m not wasting my time. Lol
I remember watching a channel called Shift Fire( a ranger vet and a green beret vet) and they tried a Norwegian military selection drill using the treadmill where they incline the treadmill after a set time. Smoked both of them.
I am prior service 85-89. Great video, I am getting ready to start training for a ruck march next September. This gave me the answers I was looking for.
I actually do quite a bit of my low intensity running on the treadmill. So easy on the knees in comparison to hard pack or asphalt. You have to run quite a bit more to get the same workout, but it DOES work, at least for me.
That is crazy timing, I've been training for RASP, and I was just about to ask this question on the next video because I felt that treadmills didn't feel right compared to training on the land. Awesome video as always Buck!
No legit Ranger would own a treadmill unless it was for his stripper wife. Want to be a Ranger? Get the fuck outside. Cover ground. Carry at least 100 lbs., pump 10 lb dbs, and seek discomfort always.
@@LemonGaming100 Actually it is. Were you in? Are you watching the erosion of standards and training protocols across all branches? Treadmill is super awesome so you can naked hike where that usually gets you in trouble out in public places :D lol but some good points about training so thanks for the video
Not a military guy, but an avid hiker/backpacker. I would say get out in nature, it's so much easier to take your mind off things outside rather then on a treadmill. Knowing that you have to get back and you can't just quit whenever you get worn out is also a great way of testing your limits and your drive. Also it was mentioned here before treadmills not so great for your knees by comparison. Oh and any purpose built kit you want to put together is a plus. It's good to have small kits for specific tasks, that way you know what you need will be there and your not searching for things. I did buy your foot care kit, thought that was a good idea I use to have foot care stuff with my med bag. Anyway I enjoy the content and look forward to more.
Interesting! I've always been wary of treadmill because I feel like road/trail miles tune my proprioception which helps me avoid turning my ankle/falls etc - paranoid about an injury getting me kicked off hills phase! Ideal for anyone trying to train when it's icy/crazy hot out though. Thanks for all the great content from aspiring UKSF candidate 🇬🇧🇺🇲
Doing ruck training on the treadmill. I got a cheap hiking backpack from Walmart and put in plates with blankets for cushioning. I set the treadmill to about 4.3 and have been watching the Walking Dead. When they're fighting or running from walkers, I crank the speed to 5.0 - 5.5 and don't slow down till it gets to a calm scene. Right now have gotten to a 37.5 pound ruck for an hour and a half. Any training is better than nothing. Anything worth doing, also has value doing poorly!
I think treadmills are great if someone wants to practice under a constant speed level, but in the end, getting used to running on the road/trails is what I think makes me stronger.
When you are walking in the Sandhills of North Carolina you will be walking on lots of sand. Just like the name says. If your feet, ankles, and knees are not used to being unstable you will be in trouble. You need to get used to a variety of surfaces. You also need to make sure you have good boots and socks for wet conditions. You will get wet at Camp Mackall, be ready for it.
I always liked a treadmill, because of the incline and you can set the pace. I try to go faster on the mill because it doesn't translate to real world conditions. I was able to run 5:30 miles in real life, and ruck 10 miles with 70lbs in under two hours. I failed SFAS twice, so It wasn't good enough, so maybe try harder or something.
Buck super serious question. What if someone becomes a Green Beret, gets deployed to Afghanistan but they can't grow a respectable beard? Is a merkin an option?
something important for people to know is that if you're not on an incline, with the treadmill i mean, you're robbing yourself and wasting time. a flat treadmill, all you have to do is lift your legs, it's not really like 1:1 with walking. if you set it to a 15d incline, you get TWICE the calorie burn and you're actually loading yourself forward like you do on the leg outside. also yeah invest in some headphones and crank whatever gets you moving, podcast or music or whatever, for me it's bonnie tyler but no judgement if you're not the hero she needs. i just put down an hour at 5mph to test out my ruck sack over my AVS carrier and found out my AVS could DEFINITELY be tighter, it's a great way to find out how secure gear is. also kit running should be a fraction of your cardio. your back has the ability to get stronger over time, but your spine? that shit does not get strong, it just gets compressed and injured. use stretches to keep it extended and loose and learn to know and love pull-ups.
Great info thanks for your service. My questions is why do they have you guys run 5 miles in 40 minutes or less. When "most" of the GB I see look like the Hulk?(Except you) I don't believe they are running 5 in 40
You have to remember the treadmill doesnt do anything to help the muscles in your feet handle uneven terrain. You still need to go on a trail and hills.
