Ruth Ann Swenson is revelation! Incredible!
I must say, I was never a great fan of the later Patricia Racette, but this early in her career she was singing really well. Her Mimi here is a textbook rendition vocally, in an almost flawless Italian. Quasi-idiomatic. 👏 Brava!
Miss Vaness is STUPENDOUS here
Damn, Ruth-Ann Swenson was good!
Yes...at that time she was great.
sadly her career fizzled out due to health issues.
@@papagen00I think she waz still singing well. But for some reason she wasn't getting hired as much.

I had the great pleasure of meeting her in Princeton, NJ. She was absolutely adorable and lovable. For many years I have considered her a great artist, and meeting her was such a wonderful experience.
The Bohēme singing is top class, as are Carol Vaness snd Richard Margison, who sings Nessum dorms as well as anybody, and I mean anybody.
The Voigt/Domingo duet alone is worth the watch. It's a shame the picture quality is so poor. Looks like a VCR copy of a pledge night rerun. This was originally broadcast on PBS but sadly it's not in their archives.
I appreciate having information about the songs and the names of the singers in the notes.
😉
I was there. Thanks for the memories!

Wow. I forgot what an extraordinary feast of great singing this was. I remember being a bit disappointed when I saw the telecast because of what and who was missing. First of all, the actual concert began with something quite historic played over the speakers in the auditorium - a bit of the historic 1932 radio broadcast of act one of the Tosca performance (with Muzio) that inaugurated the Memorial Opera House. That was not included in the telecast. AND there were important guests present, including Joan Sutherland, that we did not get to see. And so much of the applause sounds artificial and truncated - which really blunts the sense of 'occasion.' This is a criticism of director Brian Large & Co. who decided to present this concert in very heavily 'handled' fashion. I''m saying all this to underscore that I have allowed those disappointments to overshadow what in fact was still an extremely impressive concert. Even with somewhat dim visuals, it's incredibly exciting.
James Morris sounds very well with choir. It's dark here, I can't see what is choir's real size, but Scarpia doesn't squeeze through choir, he almost covers it:
Year please?
Beautiful✨✨✨❤❤❤

Ramey's Russian is perfect here. It's almost at the same level as famous Bulgarians (Christoff and Ghiaurov). There are some issues (for example "ы" vowel is more like "и"), but only native speakers can here it, and only if they will listen this carefully.
At least spell Miss Voigt's name correctly . There is no "h"
