The creator of Kevin Can Fuck Himself was insistent that the sitcom parts be written, acted, and filmed as a real laugh track sitcom without any sense of irony. I think it will become a cult favorite as the years go on because it's so unique and interesting.
its such a unique concept that works really well. i just finished the first season. such a great ending done mostly by the visuals that were setup. catches you off guard. i hope it gets the recognition it deserves. with most people being online/streaming these days, gems like this go unnoticed
Just watched the first episode and the concept is phenomenal. I only wish some of the dialogue and interactions were a bit better written during the non-sitcom parts, like it should have went SUPER dark where it's like I'm watching king of queens one second and some dark Norwegian crime thriller the next
I wish it had done more with its two seasons. Ultimately satirizing the most popular form of television (multi cam sitcoms) with the second most popular form of television (gritty single camera realism) only works when you either lampshade it or play it seriously enough to earn its tone. It didn't always do that, though I thought the ending was good.

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy I wanted to watch 1899 because I loved Dark, but also didn’t want to get invested in a show that would be canceled. I didn’t watch so it got canceled. Netflix doesn’t realize that canceling so quick doesnt give me confidence that other good shows will get second seasons, so I’m less likely to watch. Hell I had barely heard of 1899 before it was cancelled
Netflix canceling 1899 was the last straw. There’s literally no point in even starting a show on Netflix because they cancel 90% of the stuff they make.
And it is kind of becoming a self fulfilling prophecy - a lot of people don't start watching a Netflix show now until they know that at least 3 seasons are complete, couse they don't want to invest time in a show that will be cancelled. Which hursts the numbers, and increases the chances of the show getting cancelled.
I just want to mention how helpful it is that they play the little bumper for whatever streaming service/release date/production company for the thing they are talking about after each one. Thanks!
I'd love to give Bones and All a chance, but that body breaking scene in Suspiria shocked my brain into a new dimension. If even Jay says parts of it are "genuinely grotesque", then it's definitely way too gross for me haha
I would say watch it. I'm not at all into gross, bloody horror (to the point that I almost skipped Bones & All for that reason), and I really enjoyed it. There are a few bloody eating scenes, but they're just now and again.
This is what breaks my heart about it not being renewed. Dark is such a perfect story. Relatively short, sweet, and so incredibly well made. I was really looking forward to them being able to tell a similarly complex story across 3 seasons.
They swapped persona. And by that I mean they swapped the wardrobe.... but as far as the story goes I think Mike is Jay and Jay is Mike? And Mr Plinkett is back to normal...? The half in the bag lore is a little convoluted.
First off: thank you for recommending "Kevin can..." I wouldn't have given that a shot until you described it. Now....when you mentioned Strange New Worlds I got my hopes up. And I totally get bailing while watching the second episode. I was going to do the same thing....but I stuck with it....and Episode 3 was actually kinda great.....by episode 5 I was hooked....then there are some stinkers ....but episode 10....that season finale....it was incredible. I doubt you're going to give this show another try....but I highly recommend watching that last episode.
Just binged “Fleishman Is in Trouble” because of Mike’s recommendation. Holy shit. It’s an insult how little marketing FX shows on Hulu get, because with this and “The Bear,” they’ve been on a bit of a winning streak.
Kevin Can Fuck Himself was so damn good. On one hand I wish it had more than 2 seasons, but on the other they wrapped it up decently and if I want to revisit it or show/recommend it to someone its not a very big time investment.
Mike talking about Kevin Can F**k Himself reminded me to actually go and check that series out -- it's a shame it got cancelled! I loved the idea for it and the lead was really great on Schitt's Creek
"Cancelled" may be the right term for it, but I understand the show got a real ending so it doesn't feel like a cancellation. (This is hearsay. I haven't seen it myself yet.)

I'm very glad they recommended The Menu last time. It looked "ehhhh" but I watched it with my friend after we came back from getting drinks last night and it's such a fun movie.
I can't handle sad or depressing movies anymore so these catch-ups have been very helpful. Mike and Jay will opine about grim modern masterpieces and I instantly know, "not that one".
during the part where they're talking about "Kevin Can Go Fuck Himself" it makes you realize that the way "serious" shows and movies look is just as formulaic as a shitty sitcom. maybe worse because I am so sick of stuff looking desaturated. the clips they shows of the spielberg movie were pissing me off with the way they fucked with the colors.
This really resonated with me. I watch a lot of movies when I visit my parents and we hang out, and they still enjoy all sorts of emotionally draining movies without crying and I end up a wet mess by the end of every one. To quote Harris Wittles, " Motherfuckers just want to laugh" and i think that's a very true and simple statement. We cry enough in our regular lives.
@@joelanderson4899 I've started watching Bluey, a show for 3 year olds, just because it's cute and positive. So hard to actually start these depressing shows like Andor or Dark, just rarely in the mood anymore.

I think the plagiarism wasn’t a completely baseless rumor. From what I saw, the brazillian graphic novel it’s ALLEGEDLY based on looked like a storyboard for the tv show, it even had the same alchemical triangle designs everywhere.
1899 was peak mystery box bullshit. It made me laugh just how frequently that characters got away with not revealing plot points because they're interrupted at the exact perfect moment. Mike is definitely having a Jurassic World moment here.

_Bodies Bodies Bodies_ was one of my favourite movies lasr year and I'm really glad to hear Mike and Jay talk about it after the God awful marketing made so many people skip it.
While Mike didn't say much about it, hearing that he enjoys Evil made me happy. That show is so bonkers and ridiculous yet it manages to fully understand its characters. ALSO really feeds my craving for the good seasons of X-files.
Caught the first few episodes of Kevin Can Fart Himself, really great concept that plays with our sensibilities as an audience, so far I want it to work much more than it actually ends up working. I feel there is untapped potential for this type of pov coded genre switching.
I have to feel like Kevin Smith telling a story where one of his self-insert characters has a heart attack and goes on to film what he knows versus one of his self-inserts going through something equally disastrous and being miserable until his death *HAS* to reflect Smith himself. Like both parts are him, and reconciled they're basically him knowing he's shackled to his little John Hughes-esque universe for the rest of his life.
Jay mentioning not caring about Blockbuster is essentially how I feel/felt about it. I’m from a small place and we had our own video rental store (“Silver Screen”). But it had so many different types of movies. From back in the day to present (at the time). They even had video nasties and a bunch of foreign horror films. That place really kept my love of movies going.
You can say that about every nostalgic thing boomers and beyond care about. There was nothing about Blockbuster just as there's nothing about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or whatever "product" that was your childhood.
1899 defaulted to dubs which was really weird when i found out halfway through they were all speaking different languages and that it affected the way characters interacted.
@@suburbancarwash209 I didn't chose anything; it was defaulted. Add into that that you have English speakers in the dub and yeah by that point I realized I was already used to their voices and later still that i realized they all spoke different languages. Glad to hear Mike talk about and that he liked Fleishman Is in Trouble. The last episode or two brought me to tears, I was hooked on the show. Maybe now that it’s fully out I’ll watch it again, all in one go.
I pretty much got the "twist" in 1899 almost right away and from that moment on, none of the macro actions made sense. (And as soon as they announced there was a "creator", it was patently obvious who that was.) The last scene made everything worse, because the characters you got invested in no longer existed. As it turned out, the show writers had "some ideas" on how to continue the show, rather than an actual plan. Twas disappointing.
I live in the city where the last blockbuster video is, it’s right down the street from my methadone clinic. So I’ve been in there. I bought a t shirt because I wanted to do my part to keep these people behind the counter employed as long as possible. But it was empty. They are still renting movies but I think they are mainly surviving on people from out of town coming in and taking pictures with their smartphones. @@summerwoodsmusic can't say there wasn't urging by my uncle and aunt to enjoy weird al but as a 20 year old I love him endlessly, uhf is a timeless classic for anyone who has a basic understanding of pop culture. I haven't seen the weird movie but my sister (also a zoomer) did and loved it (when Coolio died I saw trending on TH-cam Coolio and Al at the 96 MTV awards with matching hair) I'd never seen that one before and lost it at the sight of it.
He's a genuinely good musician before you even start considering his comedy, which is incredibly endearing.

It’s amazing how Netflix has lost all credibility with everyone knowing they will cancel a series on the drop of a dime
I call it the Google Effect. I'll never invest more than about an hour of time in a new Google product because it will most likely just get canceled.
@@FortWhenTeaThyme I remember when people thought Google fiber would take over the US… :/
It’s a self fulfilling prophecy
I wanted to watch 1899 because I loved Dark, but also didn’t want to get invested in a show that would be canceled. I didn’t watch so it got canceled. Netflix doesn’t realize that canceling so quick doesnt give me confidence that other good shows will get second seasons, so I’m less likely to watch.
Hell I had barely heard of 1899 before it was cancelled
The best thing to do is just cancel your Netflix subscription and 'find' what you actually want to watch on the internet.
Watch "Barry", they take a lot of funny swings against streaming services and Hollywood in general.
Netflix canceling 1899 was the last straw. There’s literally no point in even starting a show on Netflix because they cancel 90% of the stuff they make.
CONSUME THE HOLLYWOOD MEDIA! YOUR LIFE IS EMPTY WITHOUT IT!
And it is kind of becoming a self fulfilling prophecy - a lot of people don't start watching a Netflix show now until they know that at least 3 seasons are complete, couse they don't want to invest time in a show that will be cancelled.
Which hursts the numbers, and increases the chances of the show getting cancelled.
why would you ever want more than 1 season of a show
You don't get it, they only cancel good shows so most you can watch.
I am still fucking salty over them axing the Get Down a few years back.
I just want to mention how helpful it is that they play the little bumper for whatever streaming service/release date/production company for the thing they are talking about after each one. Thanks!
Even in the U.K. it gives a guide to where it might show up eventually - so usfull

@@PalisadeFence Okay, I... I trust you! I'll have to give it a go sometime. Thank you for the reassurance haha
The movie is good but gross as fuck. If you're squeamish don't watch it imo

It's a brutal movie but also somewhat beautiful.
Mike if you loved 1899 you'd love "Dark" by the same creators. Unlike 1899 it's actually complete!
This is what breaks my heart about it not being renewed. Dark is such a perfect story. Relatively short, sweet, and so incredibly well made. I was really looking forward to them being able to tell a similarly complex story across 3 seasons.
I think one of them has talked about it before, but i have no idea when. It might have been way back in the PreRec streams.
Dark is incredible!!
Dark just builds on its own excellence. I don't think there's a weak character in the bunch.
Dark is my GOAT tv show
Blockbuster ran the local rental out of business back in 89.
Watching Blockbuster take a dirt-nap was poetic justice.
I am absolutely loving Mike’s new happy era
They swapped persona. And by that I mean they swapped the wardrobe.... but as far as the story goes I think Mike is Jay and Jay is Mike? And Mr Plinkett is back to normal...? The half in the bag lore is a little convoluted.
@@lucamckenn5932 what about his dancing in BOTW 🤣
First off: thank you for recommending "Kevin can..." I wouldn't have given that a shot until you described it. Now....when you mentioned Strange New Worlds I got my hopes up. And I totally get bailing while watching the second episode. I was going to do the same thing....but I stuck with it....and Episode 3 was actually kinda great.....by episode 5 I was hooked....then there are some stinkers ....but episode 10....that season finale....it was incredible. I doubt you're going to give this show another try....but I highly recommend watching that last episode.
I absolutely loved it.
Just binged “Fleishman Is in Trouble” because of Mike’s recommendation. Holy shit.
It’s an insult how little marketing FX shows on Hulu get, because with this and “The Bear,” they’ve been on a bit of a winning streak.
Alaska Daily is kinda eh though.
"The Bear" is unreal.
Kevin Can Fuck Himself was so damn good. On one hand I wish it had more than 2 seasons, but on the other they wrapped it up decently and if I want to revisit it or show/recommend it to someone its not a very big time investment.
Very brave decision for Clerks III to be tied into Death Note
I like a stretched reference, but I especially like a media reference Jay and Mike would never, ever catch. Maybe Jack would.
"I don't want to start babbling"

The casual way that jay describes the bones and all characters as “normal people that just happen to be cannibals” is alarming
@@notme222 that’s what Mike made it sound like but based off what I skimmed earlier, FX intended to make a third season then doubled back on the idea a few months later

I binge watched Kevin can F** Himself after your recommendation. Great show, very creative, thank you for the recommend I would have missed this one
This sold me on trying Kevin Can F*** Himself, and it became a favorite show for me, I absolutely loved it, and agree with everything they said about it. The first episode will also give you a great idea of the show, and if you'll like it or not.

I'm also over depressing shit. need more positivity in my life
during the part where they're talking about "Kevin Can Go Fuck Himself" it makes you realize that the way "serious" shows and movies look is just as formulaic as a shitty sitcom. maybe worse because I am so sick of stuff looking desaturated. the clips they shows of the spielberg movie were pissing me off with the way they fucked with the colors.

So glad to hear Mike give 1899 the credit it was due. Netflix is insane for not renewing it. Long live Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese!
I was really dissapointed how it ended, literally the same as some other show which was also cancelled after 1 season - "Life on Mars" (american version)
Awful ending, completely removed why interest I had in season two.

Fabelmans was my favorite of the year. Like Jay said, it’s surprisingly dark but also hilarious. Not the schmaltzy “movie about movies” at all.
While Mike didn't say much about it, hearing that he enjoys Evil made me happy. That show is so bonkers and ridiculous yet it manages to fully understand its characters. ALSO really feeds my craving for the good seasons of X-files.
Made me happy as well. That show is seriously good.
I love watching Mike's wheels turn as he figures out what BS he's going to say next.
I really hope that Rich plays the new Star Trek game while Mike watches because that is going to be as close to old Trek that we’re ever going to get.
1899 defaulted to dubs which was really weird when i found out halfway through they were all speaking different languages and that it affected the way characters interacted.
I mean you can’t blame the show because you chose to be lazy
@@suburbancarwash209 I didn't chose anything; it was defaulted. @@Louis-wp3fq And I'll thank him.
