I agree. It doesn't wrap itself up well enough. Watching the last episode a second time, they did explain what the characters will do after, but I didn't even catch that during the first viewing. It didn't seemed like an ending to a series thing, it seemed like a planning for the next episode thing It's a conclusion, but it's execution is questionable. They could have done so much better.
Good stuff! I also recommend "Station Eleven". Also, I was surprised to see you discuss "Severance" without mentioning that an influence on its origin and tone is the video game "The Stanley Parable", which your colleagues discussed a while ago on "Previously Recorded".
TV show producers need to finally decide if their show is "just like a long film, whose length makes it as deep as a novel" or "going to have seasons til it runs out of money" Honestly, they've been soap operas in disguise for over a decade now.
They usually all start as a "long movie" in the mind of their creators, with a beginning and an end. Then if it's financially successful, the producers / network / platform tell them "we want more. We will pay this much". The creators rarely say no, because money.

I mean I like watching them suffer just as much as the next guy, but I don't really care about those franchise. There are maybe a dozen RLM videos that I have never watched and all of them are about the Stars, Trek or Wars. (Mainly because I've never seen a single episode or movie of ST, and not a single episode and "only" 7/11 movies of SW stuff)
I, for one, am sick of the Star Trek and Star Wars stuff. There's nothing left to be said, the franchises are ruined and anything coming out related to them is a sad plastic imitation. With regular movie and show reviews on the other hand, there's a chance of finding something actually good out there - or avoiding something terrible.
@@odkres the irony is those are the videos that lead to their channel blowing up. But honestly, if you've never watched those movies you're not gonna enjoy their deep dives into them so you've made the correct choice.
Speaking of shows ending on a cliff hanger and not getting renewed, the tv show, "Sledge Hammer", from the 80's, wasn't sure they would be renewed, so they had Sledge accidentally set off a nuke which destroyed LA in the last episode of season one. Then they were renewed! Great show.

I come from the future. They brought back Yaddle. She was in an episode of the CGI Clone Wars spinoff "Tales of the Jedi." She was voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard.
"Lady who was really good" is Britt Lower and she's fantastic. I know her from Man Seeking Woman and Future Man, among other things (both great comedy series that both have dumb sounding titles, but for real give them a try).
I was SO happy that FROM dropped in Oz this week, last time RLM did a good review of something right up my alley was ‘Censor’ and it took years for it to stream down here. Same with ‘Saint Maud’ - YEARS to come out in Australia. Both were absolutely worth the wait, so I am GAGGING for this series.

Another good show with a mystery that actually knocked it completely out of the park in season 2 is Raised by Wolves. It's surprisingly good, and the main show-runner/creator/writer (not Ridley Scott, they just slapped his name on it to sell it) wrote a complete 5-season story arc before they even started filming the first season. I finally did watch it this winter and I have to agree with Jay in a way, there are too many Episodes for the story it tells. Like, it's an amazing show, obviously but it really draaaags at times. I usually love some well written dramas (which is why I was so pleasantly surprised by Arcane) yet BB did not quite hook me. It would have IF I had watched it back when it was fresh. Kind of like GoT now, I think. If I were to ever re-watch Season 1-4 I may feel similar. What I'm trying to say is that yes BB is good, incredible even, yet you do have to invest a lot. And knowing the show through cultural osmoses does not really make that time worth it, IMO.
I feel totally like Mike and Jay about severance: the first season has been one of the best shows I've seen in recent years, but I'm afraid that in the second season they will go more for a "mistery box / what are the answers to all the questions" kind of show, than keeping exploring this interesting science fiction concept.
I didn't know it was going to be an ongoing series. If I had, I would've waited a few years to see how it turns. When I saw the end of the season, i just thought "goddamn it". I've just been burned too many times.
@@scottosau I don't know with that cliffhanger ending. Hopefully season 2 goes well, but who knows? I agree about "Westworld". The first season can be watched on it's own with no problems. In fact, I have the first season on DVD. I disagree with you about "Game of Thrones", though. The seasons tie in to each other so much that you can't just watch the first three or four seasons and be done with it. There's no ending or resolution to the stories. Did not expect you guys to know Kids in the hall! My wife was the costume supervisor on this new season. She is very proud of the gag she worked in, in the 60 on the pole sketch she crafted the fake tesicles in the tighty whities out of chicken cutlets (not in the script) She was so proud to show me her balls on screen.

I’ll never watch any of the shows they talked about, but I still like hearing them talk about stuff.
"I got what I wanted from season 1, and I'm out." That's totally how I felt about Westworld. Season 1 is so perfect and so well done, it tells a complete story that has a satisfying ending, and even though I was really excited about season 2, as soon as I started watching it I completely checked out. I got a few episodes in and just stopped.
All I could think of throughout that spiel was Westworld.
The writing got TERRIBLE between seasons, somehow.
Same. The second season was okay but they just got so lost in their own irreverence with the technology and "humanity" and by season 3 I just couldn't care anymore.
Plus they set up quite a few interesting subplots that just went to shit because they didn't know how to follow through.
if ozark was a ball being dropped like a neutron star, westworld is an object of ever increasing mass and velocity shooting further and further down out of the universe with each passing season, its baffling how bad and nonsensical its become after that first season
like Stranger Things. Season 1, that'll do.

I'm kind of surprised they've never discussed Better call Saul before, especially since Mike appreciates Breaking Bad.
I'd love to see even a loose review after season 6 is over.
They don't seem to discuss actually good serious shows if they can't make fun of them.
tbf, it'd also feel kinda pointless to me. Like why discuss a show that's been absolutely discussed to death and where everyone is of a similar opinion anyway? Not saying it's only worth voicing unique opinions, but if you don't at least have something to add, eh, why bother ...
@@Sp4mMe That is a fair point
They don't tend to talk good shows on half in the bag anymore. More on jay and Mike talk (or whoever). And that's fine.
I just finished OZARK and i have to say - 100% agree with Mike's verdict.
I agree. It doesn't wrap itself up well enough. Watching the last episode a second time, they did explain what the characters will do after, but I didn't even catch that during the first viewing. It didn't seemed like an ending to a series thing, it seemed like a planning for the next episode thing
It's a conclusion, but it's execution is questionable. They could have done so much better.
But it isn’t over is it? I thought they broke the final season into two parts.
Good stuff! I also recommend "Station Eleven". Also, I was surprised to see you discuss "Severance" without mentioning that an influence on its origin and tone is the video game "The Stanley Parable", which your colleagues discussed a while ago on "Previously Recorded".

TV show producers need to finally decide if their show is "just like a long film, whose length makes it as deep as a novel" or "going to have seasons til it runs out of money"
Honestly, they've been soap operas in disguise for over a decade now.
They usually all start as a "long movie" in the mind of their creators, with a beginning and an end.
Then if it's financially successful, the producers / network / platform tell them "we want more. We will pay this much". The creators rarely say no, because money.

It's only 5 seasons...
If a show has over 3 seasons it's a commitment you gotta be ready for.
