  • Hello bird friends. It is not going so well with a goldfinch and a crossbill. To find out what she is wrong before I try to treat them, I examine their stools under the microscope. In this video I show you how you can do that.
    Enjoy watching!
Hallo vogelvrienden.
    Nyd at se!

Loved the video, I also do this but thought you would use flotation as well as direct smear.

Thank you, Ivo for sharing. It was very interesting indeed 👍
I am now tempted in getting a microscope, but probably would not really know what to look for...
So for now i will just keep watching my birds and learning.

Like I said in the video. It is not for everyone but because of my background as a laboratory worker it is not very difficult for me. But indeed, an experienced breeder knows what is wrong just by looking at the birds. Thanks for watching David!

I've been using Sodium Benzoate against Megabacteria. I give it to all my birds(mostly Goldies).
It's a common food preservative. Easily available. Easy to administer and much cheaper than Amphotericin.
"The treatment with 1 gr/L of sodium benzoate resulted in depression and lethargy in some affected birds and obvious decreased water consumption in the flock. Consequently the dose of medication decreased to the level of 500 mg/L of drinking water and it continued until eight weeks. Interestingly, the droppings examined during the treatment were negative for the presence of M.ornithogaster from day 20 after medication and mortality of chicks almost ceased. In addition, the occasional necropsy examination of some birds after eight weeks of the treatment showed typically reduced lesions and a subjectively decreased number of proventricular yeasts."

Enjoyed the video, it's hard to treat the birds, as usually when they show signs of illness, it's already past the point of no return, mice can be a real problem, gram negative bacteria/gram positive bacteria, an old bird keeper I knew used to go out in the fields, and dig a sod of earth, he called it virgin earth/soil, uncultivated earth, he placed it, with the grass, roots etc, in the aviary, he said the birds would take important minerals from the earth, and it could bring the birds back into good health /condition.

Thanks Mark. What I use in my aviary is a mixture of sand, compost and treebark to create a sort of forestsoil. The pH in this soil is low so pathogens have a lower chance of surviving and infecting the birds. My birds generally do well on this but it does not prevent my birds to get sick for 100%. Us birdkeepers try to give our birds the best food and care we can get but we can not even match with what nature can provide. That old birdkeeper was right about these minerals in that soil I guess. Wurth to try this out yourself.

I was looking for a microscope to examine droppings of my goldfinches. This video is great. Thank you very much! I would like to take your advise about the microscope. You say that you are using a child microscope. I was thinking of buying one but hesitate since not sure about the accuracy of the results. I see that from my researches 100x magnification is enough for coccidiosis but I suppose I need at least 400x magnification for differentiating bacterias. Also even they say they have 400x magnification I am not sure if toy microscope work as said. I am thinking of buying one from aliexpress for 70-80 dollars. I would be very appreciated if you could give me some advise about it.

Hi Sabah, nice that you watched and that you found it interesting. The microscope I have is from Bresser. If you search for Bresser LCD Microscope you will probably find it. Although this is not a professional microscope, it works well and is also easy to use for children. I would advise you not to purchase a children's or toy microscope. These are generally not that good anyway. It is better to spend a little more money for a good microscope and not to purchase a cheap one via Aliexpress.
There are quite a lot of relatively cheap well-functioning microscopes on the market. I think you can find a good one between $150 and $250. For example on Amazon
there are more than enough different ones in that price range.
You don't necessarily have to have one with an LCD screen, there are also microscopes for sale with 1 eyepiece with an adapter for your smartphone to take photos and videos.
In terms of magnification, I would go for one that can magnify 40x, 100x, 400x and 600x. With this you can detect most parasites, including coccidiosis. Bacteria are better detected at 1000x, but this is with a special oil immersion lens and you have to perform a GRAM staining to clearly observe them. It is then possible to distinguish gram-negative and positive cocci and rods. The exact type of bacteria can only be determined with microbiological research. I hope you find my answer useful. Good luck finding a microscope and good luck with the goldfinches!

@@breedingaviandinosaurs2728 This is more than useful my dear bird friend. You are so kind and generous with your knowledge. I will search on Amazon too and try to find a good one according to your advises. I keep watching your videos. Thank you again!
