Dragon Rising's primary issue was the stigma it had as a supposedly "consolised game", if only we all knew the absolute state things would be in at this point it'd probably have been looked upon more favourably.
A lot of the reason we're making our game is that if you want something done well, do it yourself, and what we've wanted to be done well is a Cold War tactical shooter with a high focus on equipment accuracy and the realism of individual firefights, which we think we're doing pretty well so far.

    • @CAjokeRCA
      @CAjokeRCA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I had this game on console at the same time I had arma 2... this game was amazing on console... it died bc you had to literally tell the ai to do everything on top of it’s plethora of glitches. None of that was new player friendly & people new to mil sims really struggled w controlling AI. The devs had several issues along the way as well.
**Edit** to clarify, military terms, tactics & nuances were never "taught" to the player in the first game, it was as if the developers implied you needed some base knowledge to truly thrive in their game.. This, to me is more evident w their Sequel (Red River) which did feature a "new player friendly" tutorial mission. For people without the background knowledge, alot of what milsims have to offer will go completely unnoticed- the movements, the staging etc. Given the Command system's complexity in the first game, along w other "short comings" for newer players, it feels this likely the reason Red River came across as more "Call of Duty-like". They tried to appeal to more casual players & thats where they diluted the game into a genre neither Milsim players, nor casuals really could enjoy. On top of their emphasis on Co-op in the sequel, which seemed like a huge focus change for the title..
To me this is evidence for the rest of my Original statement below:
It’s sequel proved the developers had an identity crisis w this title. They wanted something closer to battlefield & moved away from milsim. Despite the characters being pretty well written, the game failed to deliver a mil sim experience & under delivered on the action packed front as well. Also, their ad campaign was non existent. Hard to get people excited about a game they don’t know exists. .
In short, the game failed for the same reason most Codemaster games fail- lack of support from devs. Without dedicated niche fans, their games die.
Personally, dragon rising multiplayer had the best 1v1 RTS mode, by accident. If you were the only player spawned on the team you could issue commands to all the ai- turn off respawn & you’ve got a high stakes 1st person RTS.. it was sweet & easily my favourite “mode” I’ve ever played in an FPS. The maps being intentionally imbalanced helped & hurt the game for different reasons as well (most maps featured a high tech side v a numerical advantaged side, in some form or another-whether it be access to vehicles, or advanced weaponry & equipment). This was a staple I enjoyed that added more complexity to 1v1 strategy..

Having flashbacks right now to playing this on the 360 with my buddy. We used to play 1v1 Infiltration matches. It was so fun. He was in complete command of his people, I was in complete command of mine. If you died, you just picked from the list of whoever was still alive. But it was less of a shooter than it was a game of chess. Setting up your defenses, planning your attacks. HUGE flanking maneuvers. Artillery smokes to mask movement or create confusion. Good times, good times.

I played Operation Flashpoint Red River on the Xbox One, and I was not a fan of it. Bullets were straight up going through enemies doing nothing at all, and I had to shoot someone in the head at times 3 to 4 times to get a hit registered. Is Dragon Rising worth getting or is it like Red River?

I mean Operation Flashpoint series did start off by many of the same people who later made Arma. It was just that due to a ton of issues they went eatch their own way. One could bearly push out a stable game while the other had a stable game and made alot of equipment and gear for a faction that only appeared towards the end of their game.

I loved this game. A nice balance between fun and realism/military sim like Arma and a casual FPS.
Didn't really like Red River that much, since it lacked a mission editor (but the co-op campaign was fun!) but man I have some good memories from Dragon Rising.

The editing DLC was bugged. Only 60 units could be on the map at any one time. Enemies could also walk through barriers and walls. The single-player missions were purposely made difficult but not in a challenging way: only giving you an iron sight, only 3 or 4 magazines, and a weapon that only fired bursts of 3 rounds, which against body armor is never enough. These things mean that a mission would take an hour rather than 15 to 20 minutes if you had a good weapon with good sights with ammo. Objectives were also purposely far apart so you would spend a lot of time walking between locations. Having said that, I have clocked up around 400 hours - mostly with created missions from the editor. It's very good, despite its faults.

The flashpoint devs were the same that made arma as far as I know. So this was released during the first stages of early arma games. Their most recognized game called operation flashpoint: Cold War crisis has been put on steam as Arma: Cold War Assault in the year 2011

It has failed because Codemasters did a failed attempt of ripping money off of Bohemia Interactive's child that was the Original OFP. From the get-go the game was supposed to bring people thinking it is the real sequel to Cold War Crisis to play it.

Operation flashpoint: cold war crisis came out 2001 and I played that when I was really young. Bohemia took that game and re-released it as ARMA: Cold War Assault. I think it might include the operation flashpoint: Resistance too which was a expansion to cold war crisis not too sure on that one.

Loved this game. You strike me as a person that also played MAG (Massive Action Game) on PS3 by ZipperInteractive. It was up to 256 players in one game, and one day Zipper up and killed the servers (it was online only). Aside from PS3 losing support, I feel like people would’ve supported if they’d let us.

When i got the news that someone bought tha name of operation flashpoint to make future games i didnt eaven consider to buy them, i sticked to the old devs and ARMA. People still play ARMA to this day :)

Red River is stuck in limbo because it requires Games on Windows LIVE in order to run properly, and the only way to re-release it on Steam is to gut out functionality that relies on Games on Windows LIVE, and at this point i'm pretty sure Codemasters don't have a reason, monetary or otherwise, to spend the time and resources to do that.
Kinda sad with the current situation of things considering it (OFP:DR) was a fun game, and more of a game than the ARMA series became as time went onward. It lacked the larger scale, but more than compensated in the fact that it was stable and wasn't released immediately broken (i.e. ARMA2: Operation Arrowhead on steam claims to be a standalone expansion pack, but actually has dependencies that are in ARMA2, and ARMA2: Army of the Czech Republic, with a line of broken code that would prevent you from playing even if you did have these dependencies... ).
AI was competent enough to follow your orders, and gameplay usually encouraged you to push objectives and newer secondary ones as they came up, instead of hiding a kilometer away with a sniper rifle shooting at ARMA's un-suppressable AI at "realistic" difficulty (I'm looking at you, CSAT autorifleman at full sprint). ARMA's gameplay is fun when everything works. The problem is, that isn't a case a majority of the time and it only lead to frustration. Codemaster's OFP had the potential of keeping the pressure on to BI so that ARMA can shape up to be more and more stable, instead of needing modders to constantly fix the UX to be even halfway decent.

@@enriquecadlum189 Getting past Windows Live is actually quite easy. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can just press guest account, offline account or something easy like that. I did it not long ago when I played it on PC again, I'd have to install it again to see though.
