Why is it called 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?
At the time Kurt was dating a girl who had the words 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' painted on her bedroom wall he thought that it would be a good song title.
WHAT HE DIDN'T KNOW was that 'Teen Spirit' was a Girls deodorant targeted at teenage girls at the time. And "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the slogan on the commercial.

Nirvana's first album was by Sub Pop records. It was called Bleach. Nirvana had went through so many drummers. When they finally got signed to Geffen Records and was ready to make this album, they had to search for a new drummer. So they found Dave Grohl, who had to learn everything that previous drummer had already done for all these songs. What pressure! Dave was supposed to be the shy quiet one because Kurt and Kris was really the band.
After Kurt died, it was like a year later when Dave Grohl released his first Foo Fighters album. It was incredibly weird seeing Dave smiling on the cover photo, because it just seemed that he didn't give Kurt respect.
But Dave made some pretty good songs from that first record. He played every instrument on that record AND sang. He only formed the band after the album was released.

  • @melanier7731

The Drummer, Dave Grohl is so fun to watch drum. Nirvana and most of the Foo Fighters emerged from different punk scenes (Dave's most well known for Scream out of VA/DC, NOT Seattle.) He was the first drummer who was able to sing back up and harmonize with Kurt. He is now very well known for his scream. He is the hardest hitting drummer around. People argue that he is not technical, but he will go down as one of the most highly influential drummers of our time. He has also developed skill over time - he was 22 when Nevermind came out. Even though he's been front man in the Foo Fighters for 26 years, he still considers himself a drummer first. He learned how to drum listening to punk music and drumming on his pillows in his room. I highly recommend the book The Storyteller by Dave Grohl to get a sense of him. But there is SO much more. He has also done some incredible side projects. Take a look at Them Crooked Vultures (drums) and Probot (most instruments.) Would be great to review them as well as his time with Queens of the Stone Age, and he just did a song with Mick Jagger virtually bc they were bored in lockdown. He has played or at least knows EVERYONE in the business and still considers himself a fan/regular guy. His fan base is rabid, but like a family. Everyone gets along and no one gets hurt. Fans take care of each other and accept each other and he loves when we sing his songs back to him. He has kicked people out of his concerts for fighting (although there are plenty of bands that will stop that shit.) He also has a habit of letting a fan up on stage and play the drums or guitar for a song. Look up the Metallica one at the Foo Fighters concert. I was busy worshipping (and meeting!) David Bowie when Nirvana was out so ignored them. Life was happening during Foo Fighters, but one of their songs recently triggered me to save myself and I am now a devoted fan. Respect. Whether you like them or not. Kurt was a genius in his way, and Dave is a genius in his. Both were high school drop outs and never expected fame - they just loved music and were incredibly talented. To this day, Dave cannot read music or teach someone to play drums bc he just does it.

2 out of the first 3 comments already indicated the drummer of Nirvana is now lead singer and guitarist of Foo Fighters (by the way can't go wrong going down that rabbit hole) but it just feels like you have to state that on a Nirvana song for some reason (I mean if Dave Grohl had enough arms he wouldn't need band members to play live with he is quite capable of recording the whole band solo in fact he did for the first album)

A Grannie saying "Grunge" was worth the price of admission. Kurt was keen on not explaining his lyrics, he wanted people to interpret them they wanted to "it's your crossword puzzle" he said.

Incesticide is my all time favourite album from Nirvana :) In Utero is almost tied though, both are definitely what I’d use to introduce someone to Nirvana. Album wise anyway! Although I do love them all for different reasons. First ever song that I heard was Drain You (from Nevermind). I remember other songs I first heard were Sappy, Territorial pissings, aneurysm, heart shaped box. Then a little later Love Buzz, and Floyd the barber. So many sounds, I was totally addicted before I even knew Kurt had passed away. Broke my heart although I was ten years too late. I found out at the age of 12 back when Bebo was a thing.. someone actually told me at school and I was devastated. Anyway, favourite band and the reason why I play guitar to this day :) great video

Just for fun in your own time....you should check out Weird Al Yankovic's spoof of this video...SMELLS LIKE NIRVANA!
He used the same set the original video was filmed on. The same janitor. And a bunch of the same kids that were in Nirvana's original video. Very funny...

Nirvana played in so many underage clubs when they started, they joked about, when everyone raised their arms jamming, all you could smell was Teen Spirit deodorant 😁

Based on this, I think y'all would really like Concrete Blonde. They're not quite grunge, but I think they're a decent companion to the genre.
They were an alt-rock band in the 80's and 90's (Though they leaned a little goth on the Bloodletting album). By far their most loved song would probably be Bloodletting (The Vampire Song).

This was the first CD I ever bought and still love it to this day. I think you all would get into my favorite band Norma Jean. They are are a lot like Nirvana but 10 times heavier. Check out this song Sword in Mouth Fire eyes

Love you both! Your my mother is in her 70s and I'm not so sure she'd be as open as you lovely ladies. By the way Nirvana changed my life. Literally it's like I came online when I heard Nirvana. They also showed me to love good music as long as it has passion and sincerity. Kurt Cobain was an enigmatic artist. If there is any musicians like this in the past 25 years I haven't found them. I liken 2pac to kurt Cobain. They were both amazing artist who captured the earth. And they both were the realest in there genre. I'm 38 now and I love all the greatest from John Lennon elvis sublime Bob Marley Michael Jackson run mc ll cool j the doors to Korn slipknot and so on..I appreciate the greats and I missed a bunch. But none compares to kurt Cobain 2pac John Lennon Bob Marley jimi hendrix eminem michael Jackson and elvis. The best are obvious sure there are plenty greats like sublime Korn biggie nas tool pink floyd led zeppelin Phil Collins krs one madonna. But not revolutionary.

This song effectively ended the 80's hair bands and ushered in the new era of Grunge... pretty impressive for just a song you can barely understand.

  • @melissamissingchriscornell2513

Intetesting fact: Soundgarden, back in 84' officially started the "Seattle grunge movement" (which started off with style, punk's were staring to rock ripped flannels, dirty converse high tops, mixed matched prints, thumb holes in cuffs, corduroy everything...hence "grungy look"). Soundgarden is definitely more hard rock/metal, same with Alice in Chains ( PLEASE react to some Alice, with Layne fronting though, not Duvall), than the other "grunge" bands. You will both be blown away by Layne's hauntinly beautiful, very distinct & unique voice, & poetry. Grunge is Nirvana...same with Mudhoney, Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees (also a killer band to check out), Tad, Screaming Trees, Babes In Toyland, etc.
