  • We experienced technical difficulties for the first 7 minutes, but after that the video is smooth. Apologies for the inconvenience.
The Dutch monk, Venerable Geshe Namdak, may be the first westerner ever who has completed the rigorous geshe-program at any of the three great Tibetan monasteries, Sera, Ganden and Drepung. It is an outstanding achievement that requires immense dedication and effort.
Venerable Namdak did 19 years of intensive study and debate in Sera Jey, India, and has continued his study and practice at the tantric colleges. The office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed him to teach vinaya to students desiring ordination in the annual preordination course in Tushita, Dharamsala. Furthermore, he was recently appointed to be the resident teacher in Jamyang centre, London.
Venerable Geshe Namdak will give a public talk at Nalanda on Sunday the 1st of September, 19:00, about how study and practice is done in the great Geluk monasteries in India, and how this traditional curriculum can be applied in the West.
This is the English livestream channel of Nalanda Monastery.

What a blessing to have a geshe from the Lowlands! Thank you for your teachings Geshe-la! A blessing for our small countries, but most of all for all sentient beings

It's great to have this chance. Thank you so very much for your generosity and thank you Geshela for a teaching on such an interesting topic. May all your Dharma wishes come true right here and now.

Thank you, dear Geshe la. It was enriching to learn about your precious experiences and wisdom. I had the opportunity to learn from you a couple of times at Choe Khor Sum Ling. Hopefully after we're much safer and the Bengaluru centre can open, I can learn from you again.

Wonderful, Geshe la. Feeling so blessed to have had your humble guidance in our Preparing for Ordination course before taking vows with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. You yourself are a huge inspiration for practitioners (especially Westerners)!
    Chagtsal Lo!

A remarkable achievement indeed! Though I do have to point out that, contrary to the video's description, the first Westerner to graduate Geshe Lharampa at Gaden was Georges Dreyfus, now Professor of Religion at Williams, in 1985. 🤔☺️I highly recommend his book "The sound of two hands clapping" for a detailed description of monastic life and education in the Gelug tradition.😊
