I wish there was a better quality recording of this performance because this song showcases all of Kelli O'Hara's strengths: exceptional pitch control, flawless technical execution with effortlessly blended registers and a coloratura that occasionally, with deliberate precision, takes command of the usually sweet, lyric soprano that is O'Hara's hallmark. From a purely technical aspect, O'Hara demonstrates a faultless command of her instrument. She is able to dispatch any dynamic at any pitch and reduce it with pinpoint precision from a deep fortissimo vibrato to the most controlled pianissimo hush spinning with seemingly endless breath support. There is zero harshness in the timbre of her soprano which is clear as a bell with a full round tone and perfectly balanced vibrato. I've watched several performances of her on youtube and I was fortunate enough to see her live in Boston a few years back. She was sick and still sang the entire set, even prefacing the evening by joking there would be times we, the audience, would feel bad for her (she missed a note or two occasionally and it was evident just from her speaking voice how sick she was.) Immediately after she gave that warning, by the way, she opened the set with a stunning a cappella rendition of "To Build A Home". Her voice literally shook the walls of the venue. She did not miss a single note in the opening number, a reminder that the role was written FOR Kelli. Anyway, I digress. This performance is one of those rare live performances that perfectly showcases why a singer is one of the greatest singers of all time. I believe Kelli O'Hara to be one of the finest sopranos of all time. I say that having studied and continuing to enjoy opera. I say this after much consideration and having listened to a variety of sopranos sing their own catalogs. And there are a great many other sopranos that would join Kelli in this highest class of sopranos. But I enjoy none more than this gem from Oklahoma. What a sweet, sweet gift and what wonderfully fortunate people we are to live in a time when we can admire her in her prime.

Chris Rudel I agree with everything you said. A very rare talent she has. I was fortunate to see her in Bridges of Madison County. But my cd of Light in the Piazza got a serious workout from my daughter’s and I! That’s a show I wish I could have seen live.

Actually it was written for Jo Sullivan and there are still a few of us around who remember her and everyone else who came after. That said; Kelli O'Hara IS fabulous and takes her place among the greats.

@@Perrosiutico I remember Jo Sullivan who was born in 1927 and died in 2019.She was cast after many sopranos made auditions for the role of Rosabella including Florence Henderson Barbara Cook Shirley Jones and Marni Nixon. Florence Barbara and Shirley were rejected because their looks too young so it was between Jo and Marni. Frank Loessers wife chose Jo who five years later married the composer.

Enjoyed Kelli in Merry Widow (Met Opera at the theatres). Loved this, as you can hear her voice singularly and it is indeed a great voice. Thank you.

    Wanting to be wanted,
    Needing to be needed,
    That's what it is,
    That's what it is.
    Now I'm lucky that
    Somebody, somewhere
    Wants me and needs me
    That's very wonderful to know
Somebody lonely wants me to care
Wants me off all people to notice him there
Well, I want to be wanted
    Need to be needed
And I'll admit I'm all aglow
    'Cause somebody somewhere
    Wants me and needs me
Wants lonely me to smile and say hello
    Somebody, somewhere
    Wants me and needs me
And that's very wonderful to know

From Frank Loesser's near-operatic musical THE MOST HAPPY FELLAA! It was sung by Loesser's wife Jo Sullivan in the stage production. I LOVE this bittersweet song!

Does anyone know what key this is in?

    • @birdgirl2623
      @birdgirl2623 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

sototallyshannon It's in G major--the Broadway show key. If you get it through a digital music source, you can have it transposed up to this key, but it's also available in Volume 1 of "The Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology: Soprano" (Hal Leonard Publications). The vocal range in this key goes from E4 to G5, but it tends to stay high throughout as you can tell.
