- The Warsaw Ghetto was established by the German Governor-General Hans Frank on 16 October 1940 and completely closed one month later. At this time, the population in the Ghetto was estimated to be 400,000 people, about 30 percent of the population of Warsaw. However, the size of the Ghetto was about 2.4% of the size of Warsaw.

Film taken mainly by German sources of the Warsaw ghetto.
The Italian state broadcaster RAI has made a copyright claim on this film and it is consequently blocked in Italy. I would be interested to know how RAI claims this copyright, assuming of course that some camera team from Italy is responsible for the filming. I think that they ought to tell us. I found this film in the film archives in Warsaw.

RAI TV had a great program but in Italian with the films made by Willi Wist a German.
I changed the soundtrack. I wrote to RAI but of course got no answer!
But RAI has no copyright over that film (which I also published).

What I find desperately sad is the fact that a huge percentage of the people shown in this video probably never survived. Thanks for posting this.

Most likely. Even when they were rescued a lot died soon after. It’s beyond comprehension. I went to Dacau and Auwshitz and their are no words to describe it. Why ?

Those two little children just felt so sorry can see that there starving what a horrendous life these two little ones had too endure brakes my heart .
They did not suffer much longer. THey probably died before the gassings.

My grandma was a child during this time is Warsaw. She survived and lived with trauma till like 2011. I can’t even imagine what her and these people lived through.
Check out the documentaries by Yad Vashem and the testimonies. There is also an excellent exhibition now in Polin Museum in Warsaw about the ghetto.
The atrocities to our people will never be forgotten. My ancestors are more than likely in this film, and to know they didn't survive breaks my heart.
So are mine. My grandmother escaped. The rest no.

Your ancestors suffered, and I feel sorry for them but you have a better life now, educate people on such atrocities and make sure it doesn't happen to anyone again, no matter which region of the world, no matter whom.

I have always found it incredibly hard to believe that many German people claim they had no knowledge of what was being done to these people...
Most German people were unable to travel and could only rely on messages from those that did travel such as soldiers. In theory this had a secret classification, however they would have noticed that Jewish people disappeared.

It's isnt too hard to believe as it has been done perhaps by ancestors of those in this video. In a place called Gaza for last 18 years.
The Germans made this film in July 1942 and very few of these people were alive 4 months later.
Michael Whisman - Really, they filmed these scenes the same month that the Nazis began the transports to Treblinka? It had to have been made as some form of propaganda, presumably to record the ghetto and it's inhabitants just before it disappeared. There are better quality films in existence, such as "A Film Unfinished", that actually captures the German film makers themselves in a few frames, including the lead photographer, Willi Wist.

It is very heartbreaking to watch this, although I doubt the film was made in July. The people are wearing heavy coats and there are piles of what appear to be melting snow and ice. I would be curious whether we have confirmation on the date.

It is in the public domain. It is captured footage after WW2. That is despite a claim on this by Italian state broadcaster RAI.
This is the only footage that could possibly make Chopin’s music even more poignant and deviating.

The world never learns from history. The similarities between the Warsaw ghetto uprising and October 7th are clear. When you treat people as less than human there are consequences. The reprisal for the Jewish resistance were extreme as are the reprisals for the Palestinians.
Historically important footage, but i would like to see it with narration instead of a funeral dirge.
@zentrallondon That would have meant organising D-Day before the US was in the war. I don't think the invasion of Europe could have been done earlier and the camps were out of bombing range until the bases in southern Italy were captured.

It's happening in China in 2017. 1.5 million Uyghurs have been rounded up and are currently being held in concentration camps, awaiting a fate that is reminiscent of past atrocities such as the Holocaust. Despite this, it seems that once again the world is not taking significant action to address this issue.

@vampiroangelico Yes, I think that is the reason for the writing being backwards. I think this is not my fault when I processed the image into digital format. The image is poor made worse by me downgrading it for youtube format although I have since learned how to do better quality.

There is not a day that I don't reflect on the enormous sacrifice that we brought during the Holocaust on which my Jewish identity and faith is based. The people we are watching here were ultimately virtually all brought to the Umschlagplatz from where they were deported to Treblinka and virtually all brutality murdered. We have seen the miracle of the Jewish people rising from the ashes and the State of Israel today is a vibrant and booming economy the technology hub of the world and Tel Aviv the most expensive City on the face of the planet. The country has one of the strongest armies in the Middle East so advanced is it's technology that it is providing Germany with an air defense system. The Ghetto is the Jewish name of a self-closed suburb in medieval Venice, where the local merchants traded commodities (metals, silk, spices, slaves, ...) between the East and the West. The separation from a broader community assured the kosher life of locals, limiting contacts with un-cleans. It was (and still is) quite common practice through centuries. So this was the Jewish Ghetto.
