Zim is honestly one of the most evil characters i have ever seen Zim once brainwashed Dib to live his entire life out in the most perfect, fulfilling way possible, only to rip it all away from him and make Dib realize his entire existence was a lie. Straight one of the most deprived insane things I’ve ever seen on television.
It's kinda odd Nickelodeon saw a comic about a homicidal maniac and thought: "Hey, this guy would make a great kid's cartoon!" it was obvious the guy was going to create something that an older audience would like.
Invader Zim was so far ahead of its time. It was to children's animation what The Simpsons was to 80's sitcoms. Here was this edgy, subversive, unique series that really pushed the envelope for what was considered appropriate for television. 18 years later, it holds up in every aspect, from its art style, direction, writing, humor, even its animation holds up and in my opinion puts many contemporary animations to shame. Had this show been produced 10 years later, in an era where 2D-3D hybrid animations were more prevalent, and older teens and young adults were more keenly interested in animation than they may have been in the day, Invader Zim would have thrived. Instead of being the sort of underground cult classic that it is, it would have become a mainstream cultural phenomenon; again, I would put it on or near the level of The Simpsons. But as it was, it was released a little too early on a network that didn't support them, to an audience that largely wasn't ready for it. And maybe that's okay. The one benefit, at least in hindsight, of "failed" projects like Invader Zim is that being dropped before it could really catch on just meant that it didn't stay long enough to lose steam and focus, and devolve into a run-of-the-mill, overly commercialized piece of mediocrity. It didn't outstay its welcome, and fans may decry its perceived preemptive cancellation as unfair and unjust, but there's no denying that it's cancellation went a long way towards elevating it to its cult status. Endless talks about how the show "died before its time" doubtlessly created untold amounts of word of mouth advertising for it, priming it for a resurgence in popularity during the late 2000's. All without having to make a single new episode.

The time travel episode where he kills dib is great. It shows just how evil zim is and that despite his incompetence he is a legitimate threat when he actually pulls off a scheme. Though I don't think killing off dib for good would have been good for the show itself, since the Dib/Zim rivalry is the core of the conflict.

Yeah! Not to mention that the staff actually displayed in a script reading during Invadercon that Zim and Dib would basically feel as if their lives would have no meaning if they ever decided to stop interacting and interfering with each other's plans.

Two things I find interesting about this show. The first is that Zim, in his perspective, is not a bad person. He was raised in a culture that invading planets is a good thing and it gives him respect. He thinks that the altissimos love him and that his mission is something given specifically to him and that makes him not want to ruin things like the last time. In the film it is clearly seen how much he lost confidence in himself when he discovered the truth, showing a more insecure side of Zim. Another interesting point is Dib. The series makes it very clear that everyone hates and avoids the boy because they think he's crazy. No one, not least Gaz who knows the truth, is on his side, but that doesn't stop him from continuing to save the world from Zim's plans. I mean, he could let Zim take over the world to teach everyone a lesson, but still, he chooses to fight despite everything. This is something, in my opinion, very heroic on his part. An optimistic part of me wanted to see the two become friends, since both are people who, surprisingly, have several aspects in common.
Well, Dib doesn't fight for selfless reasons. He's only trying to save the world to Rub it in people's faces and get them to worship him. As well as to get his fathers recognition. Zim is really a bad person. Mentally ill do to a glitch in his system. Evil in some cases do to his pettyness sure. But he's not a villain and Dib is not a hero. Zim's just a soldier following orders whose fiercely loyal to his people and wants to be seen as a soldier. It's just two people on opposite sides. No hero or villain stuff. Just two soldiers fighting a war.

They are militaristic so he was doing what all other Irkians were doing. Zim has been shown to have a sensitive almost caring side that he buries in favor of acting tough like all the other Irkians. Think of how you would turn out in a military culture that favors meaner and tougher? He honestly is an average citizen if his sickness doesn't get the best of him from time to time. And he's an average soldier, but a lethal scientist.

@Sych Uan There is an episode that shows his code is defective. It was so bad that it overpowered the Ai that was meant to judge and execute him. Again, do you honestly believe you would be a patron Saint in such a society? Zim has also shown emotions that are quite empathetic. He just suppresses it in order to be a good soldier. He wants to be the best of the best for his all mighty tallest. While making the Irkan empire more powerful and feared. He has even shown a desire to die an invaders death. Propaganda is a hell of a drug. Oh, I meant to add. Yes, people can be evil and villainous. But in Zims case, think Roman Empire. To the Roman's and a lot of us, they were the good guys. But what about everyone else?

People underestimate children’s ability to handle darker themes. They need that outlet just like adults do. Invader Zim was really the only outlet kids had for such things. Kind of reminds me of The Muppet Show back in the day. Not everything has to be sugar and rainbows. Respect your kids people!
Epic, it this definitely would’ve been better off on adult swim. Whether some kids can take it or not, that’s still *some* kids. If it’s gonna air anywhere, it should be among Adult Swim Cartoons, where the team can really let loose without consequence
@@lstteaccups1616 idk, the problem wasn't the lack of "adult content", it was that Viacom wasnt willing to invest in it. So sure, another network would've been better for it as Nickelodeon is notorious for canceling shows too early, but as far as the content goes dont think it wouldve benefited from being more "mature". It wouldve been a little better without Nickelodeons specific restrictions but the same can be said with almost any show they aired.
Yeah, as a kid one of my FAVORITE episodes was dark harvest. I LOVED darker themes and HATED "sugar and rainbows" kind of stuff. It's not in like, an "Emo" way, but like darker shows really just had more personality.
It's because they did have a bunch of Zim merch in like the late 2000's. I have a couple of shirts from then and a couple of pillow cases with GIR on them. I remember seeing plushies, bags, clothes, jewelry, and other assorted merch back then.

This isn't really that well researched. It might just be that this show was slightly outside your generation, I'm not sure. Just owning the DVDs is enough to know more than what's revealed here. So just to post a few corrections; It's pronounced 'Vas-Kez' not Vasquwez, Jhonen hates his name being mispronounced lol On that note, it's Kevin MANthee Watching the commentary on the DVDs reveals tons of information about the creation of the show and the demise of it, to put in some more info... Actually the original version of the destroyed city in door to door WAS going to have a statue of liberty in it but the joke was that 'New York always gets destroyed in movies' which it does, 9/11 or not. The episodes weren't 'self contained' to that extent, the things in the previous episodes DID happen, but it was sitcom formula rather than plot arc formula, so in Bad Bad Rubber Piggy, Dib had in fact already become Zim's arch rival. Yes, Zim is evil in that episode. He's... an evil character, that's the point of the show. He's working for an evil alien race that wants to take over the universe. Duh, he's evil. In the Christmas episode the character they show that wasn't introduced on air was Minimoose. In fact it was lampshaded in the show by Zim saying 'yep, he's been here the whole time'. And last but most importantly, it was actually the Halloween special that started to lead to the cancellation of Zim. There were tons of these more lore-heavy science fiction episodes that were animated and aired as part of season 2--I'm guessing you didn't see them because Season 2 continued on with the Tak ship story and then some, but by that point Nick was starting to do their usual 'time slot jerk-around' trick to force shows into being cancelled because they don't like it anymore. The Halloween special led to a number of complaints from pearl-clutchers and this caused a great deal of back and forth between Nick and Jhonen about how much creative control he could have and it was his constant attempts at telling a cynical dark humor science fiction story instead of a lolsorandom cute robot dog screamy children story that led to them putting it in the ever-changing garbage slots until the ratings dropped and they could be justified in canceling it. I'm posting all this because I watched the movie today and this video disappointed me in its ignorance. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I haven't watched a lot of this show, but I was under the impression that Zim was supposed to be evil, at least from a human's perspective. Maybe I'm wrong, but it would kind of make sense for Zim to kill people, since invading the Earth would involve that.
Zim is evil but is too batshit insane to see simple solutions like simply killing people. But we have for sure seen him indirectly cause countless deaths in the Ultra Peepy episode.
His goal was never to kill all humans, but to enslave and subjugate them. Killing them defeats that purpose, as then there would be nobody to acknowledge his awesomeness.
Plenty of his plans are intended to be lethal for the general populace. Using Mars to crush everything on the surface for instance. Operation Impending Doom 2 is about infiltrating a planet to weaken it enough to be fully wiped out by the Armada.
Shouldn't it be noted that despite the "evil" intent behind episode 14 Karma kicked in? The more Zim attempted to alter and disable Dib's past, the stronger Dib overall becomes thanks to his father's technology, ultimately leading to Dib as critically unstable as he becomes, more and more advanced to overpower Zim's current technology. Also Zim's an Alien, hellbent on taking over or destroying earth such as all of the other Irken invaders are also doing so, in the episode Planet Jackers prior to the main episode's event, Zim is spying over his fellow invaders to see their progress, and most of them have already conquered, destroyed, and or enslaved they're respective planets that were assigned to. So for Zim to go all out and even in some creative ways to eliminate Dib, such and sending stuffed pig dolls to his past and torment his isn't above Zim as character, childish as Zim may be he is still an alien invader. In the second half of episode 19 "Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom" is literally a giant hologramized ego trip of a prank to fool Dib into thinking he won over Zim and grew up to become a successful Paranormal Investigator, and drive off the Irken army only to reveal that he indeed threw a muffin at Zim. So imagine if you lived your entire life of success into your elderly years, and are just spontaneously brought back to your childhood to find out your life was fake and and catered to your goals just to take it away and prove a point. In my perspective that's darker than the 1998 satirical film "The Truman Show". So Zim is down right evil, no mistake of it, because his character is built that way on purpose.
well, tbh, dib only got better overall when zim thought he finally killed him. then membrane turns dib into a massive robot that nothing could really kill him. also, yeah, he missed the entire point that is: Zim is fucking evil, but so crazy that instead of doing simple things to conquer the world, he simply goes with a plan so great that he defeats himself.
Seems like the closest thing that could potentially be like Invader Zim is "Villainous". But it's on Cartoon Network, and I'm not even sure if it's going to have a series.
I don't think that's when a show falls, most shows that I honestly think are great, are shows that were cancelled, but held a special place in the fans hearts. A show falls when it's dragged out too long and loses aspects of its greatness
The fact that the Invader Zim fandom/cult/following is still going strong nearly FIFTEEN YEARS after it's cancellation just proves how much worth it really is and why is DESERVES to be revived and given the spotlight it's always meant to be in. Either Nickelodeon needs to sell the full rights to Jhonen or give him the proper budget to continue the show and possibly bring back the original team that worked on Invader Zim. I don't know what standards a show must meet in order to be fully revive and not just in the form of a single damn movie, but those standards must be ridiculously stupid and need to be fixed. Invader Zim was far ahead of it's time and gave so much to the community and still is!!!!
We seem to have vastly different points of view I actually really liked the time travel episode it really stood out to me and I always felt that Zim wasn't someone to root for he came to destroy the planet The turn about at the end is a perfect example of true Karma the more Zim tried to push Dib to death the more of a Threat Dib Became in the end destroying Zim It's an ending that Neither side can really be happy over as Dib is a broken person and Zim is a puddle on the floor Until Zim undoes his actions I always took the series as a semi Episodic series the actions that take place exist but simultaneously do not in such a way that the irrecoverable damages never happen but the actions leading up to each climax does
I think parents were scared of the show. They probably thought it was too dark, edgy, and would turn their kid into some goth emo violent kid. Hell, my mom didn't want me or my sister watching it because of that reason. It didn't stop us though, and we eventually got our way. I think it affected us positively actually, it really inspired us to create more artwork and got us to think outside the box. I started to dig into Jhonen's older works, like JTHM, Squee, and I Feel Sick. I know I'm probably too young to start exploring those works (I'm 13), but I'm letting my curiosity get the best of me.

im 1 year late but i just found this video and holy shit man there was so much about this video i wasnt too fond of. he goes on and on about things constantly and it takes up quite a bit of time over the whole video, and there were a lot of things missing like how he talks about the different voice actors, but doesnt do a side by side comparison of their voices when talking about which voice he preferred and just expects you to already know what they all sound like. Then there's really sudden shifts, like how he literally goes from talking about invader zim's copyright trouble to suddenly talking about the fucking 9/11 attacks out of absolutely NOWHERE, holy shit man. i CANNOT go over how fucking SUDDEN that "the 9/11 attacks were absolutely devastating" was when he was JUST talking about fucking gameboy advanced systems and copyright. jesus christ man i never wanna watch this ytber again theres just so much about this content i dont really like

@Nick family oriented would be accurate they tend to have shows that don't insult the intelligence of the kids watching and adults can deal with. However Grim adventures is not near as dark as invader zim and episodes like dark harvest being on any 'kid' network is kid of ridiculous. My thoughts on it probably have a lot to do with the censoring that happened to yugioh and one piece when they brought it over (any anime really), but that would be the localization companies not so much the network
When people talk about how braindead Nickelodeon is, I always think of Invader Zim. Because they had such an amazing show, and canceled it halfway through its run. Just because it didn't get its target demographic, but it got a much different target demographic, and they canceled it anyway. Does anyone at Nick have any human thoughts?

@@jayjaybulldog9180 I mean, yeah, a 5 season Invader Zim show would have been awesome. (Not sure about a crossover, though…) But let’s think logically about this. By chance, if the show did get 5 seasons or was revised someway, somehow, regardless if Johnen was working on the show the entire time, it has a great chance of becoming stale. Think about SpongeBob, which aired on the same network. Yeah, they had Hillenburg the entire time (up until his death), but the show became bland after season 3. A better example would be season 2 of Invader Zim, which was already becoming bland.

He said something recently that nick had asked him if he wanted to return to directing the series and he said something like it would be too much work or commitment so he instead pitched the TV movie. It reminds me of spongebob going like " nah I dont really feel like it ".

Wait, Mark Hamill was supposed to voice Zim at first? Huh. I'm about 50/50 on wishing that had stayed. On one hand, Mark is a great voice actor and I'm pretty sure he would have been a good fit for the character, on the other hand, I really love the voice we got in the end.

Unpopular opinion : This show is better than Gravity falls. It's much darker and confident on what's trying to do, has a better soundtrack and setting, better atmosphere and the characters have more layers of complexity. Plus the humor is funnier imo.
Ooo, now that could have some merit as a true unpopular opinion. I’ve never personally considered comparing the two shows. But it is something to ponder. 🤔
@@TheAlphaJayShow Definitely with you on that comparison never having crossed my mind. They just seem like two entirely different shows to me. Gravity Falls is heavily inspired by stuff like Twin Peaks and the X-Files whereas Zim was always very much its own thing, especially as it never really messed with a true overarching plot. Love both shows.

I really hope Netflix doesn’t try to water down Vasquez. I feel like this show had so so much potential. Even as a kid. I started watching the show the night pilot aired. As a kid I never understood why the show got taken off air. I want to see what an artist Nickelodeon didn’t let him do. I hope if Vasquez gets good reception from the movie I hope he can continue the series without holding back. If he wants to of course. This show was so ahead of its time. But this show along with others molded me into who I am today.

I think it's established that Zim is not really the character you should be rooting for in this show. The time travel episode really drove that point home. I always liked Dib better than Zim, anyway. He was the only character that really cared about what was going on. Gaz knew, but had zero interest in the world around her unless it had something to do with video games or pizza.
Yeah, there a different between protagonist / antagonist and hero/ villain. Zim is the protagonist but not the hero. His job is to be comdey of the show. The person to laugh at but not root for. The person you want to see how far his plans can go but never actually succeed at carry them out. Like video says he isn't like the normal main character. He the rare opposite. Which is why the show in so unique.
Who you are routing for really depends on who you are. Like a personality litmus test... For me... Gaz is my favourite... But out of Dib or Zim.... I'm Zim all the way!!
This is really taking me back. I grew up on JTHM, Squee, I Feel Sick, and Invader Zim. In fact, I got suspended for bringing JTHM to school. They never did give me back my comics either...bastards.
Dude im not gonna lie I do not like some of your editing choices. For example: 7:42. I dont edit for a living but I will bet if I turned that in for a college project I would get a C at best. Maybe lower. I dont know why you chose to add a one minute transition but it was not a good idea. For the first mabye ten seconds I thought the video froze but then the quiet music started to kick in and I realized it was just a really poor editing choice. 16:44 as well. The lack of any audio or video before the music starts playing is very offputting.
Larksy he’s not wrong though, the problem with it is that these are less mistakes more design choices that are rally bad. There’s personal style and then there’s just bad decisions.

Even back then, even as a fan of "Are You Afraid of the Dark" and "Goosebumps" and every Stephen King movie/mini-series/etc, I understood that Zim was probably something a lot of "normal fans" probably didn't like...and when it was canceled for being "too expensive", I was sad but not really heart-broken. Like, it was kinda obvious something like that would happen and I'm glad I got to experience it when it was at its best.

Invader Zim is Evil: The show. The Main Character is trying to wipe out all Humans, the other Main Character is trying to wipe out him. And it's not you Black and White, Good and Evil, It's more like the Tom and Jerry Formula with both character trying to outsmart each other but for most of the time none of win or one is victorious but at a Cost which they make sure to show that the character took damage even after the fight. While there's a Rest Button like the characters you're were invested, and it left a impact. And that's what most Invader Zim Episode do, they leave an impact it's like a Rollercoaster; it's scary, it's never lets you take a breath, it's Epic, and awesome to see/experience to come out Satisfied yet Worn out. BUT most importantly fun and that's what all Cartoons are at there core, fun and Invader Zim is it's own brand of fun that some can handle and some can not, but even it's Evil Fun but it's even more Evil to not be fun. And Invader Zim knows that rule and will always knows that rule and will be FUN.
I think after seeing what Johen Vazquez thinks of humanity (from JTHM), possibly Invader Zim prompts us to consider who the real villains are? A species trying to establish new homes for its clearly overpopulated race, or someone part of the indiginous disease preventing that? Sure, it’s good for humans, but are humans good for humans? Also, do you think Zim would succeed if Dib wasn’t there? He fucks up on his own on the regular lol
This Show is Iconic, the MUCh more mature theme for a kid's show has made it have a massive fanbase, most of the cartoon fans I met love this show! And it's a great show!
As a thought, you said each episode was self contained and it annoyed you that zim attacked dib for no reason, but then go on to say you didn't like how Gaz as a character didn't really grow, I don't really understand your logic with that. But apart from that my opinion on the series is that the episodes aren't self contained, if it weren't for that damned episode where ZIm & Dib turn into bologna... But I put that down to cartoon logic, at the end of every episode we don't get to see how things got back to "Normal" we as a audience just have to accept that the problem was solved between episodes. There are so many examples in this series of that, Another good example being the one where Zim harvests all the kids organs. If anything I would call it loosely guided with self contained moments/endings, which alot of kids shows used to do. Anyway I'm sorry for this wall of text, I just really like Invader Zim, If a movie comes out, I really hope it captures what the show was.
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was really weird. I enjoyed it though. It was messed up and gratuitous yet it made me feel for such a character and his struggles.

What is with these channels using weird, furry-inspired avatars during scenes where they need some kind of animated representation? It's so immersion-breaking.
IZ's storytelling impresses me that despite not following a three-act structure, everything still works so well. There is even a charm to the modern gothic style madness. Today's noisy cartoons like Spongebob and Teen Titans Go feel like the zag where Invader Zim zigs.
Honestly I think Invader Zim aired in the wrong time. I feel like if it had first aired in this day and age, it would have been way more well-received.
I've always assumed that every few episodes existed in their own timelines, and we followed along until Zim &/or Dib are in a state where they're unable to continue on then jump to the next reality.

They had "Ren and Stimpy show", "Rokos modern life" and some other cartoons which aren't much different from Zim

Invader Zim was so far ahead of its time. It was to children's animation what The Simpsons was to 80's sitcoms. Here was this edgy, subversive, unique series that really pushed the envelope for what was considered appropriate for television. 18 years later, it holds up in every aspect, from its art style, direction, writing, humor, even its animation holds up and in my opinion puts many contemporary animations to shame. Had this show been produced 10 years later, in an era where 2D-3D hybrid animations were more prevalent, and older teens and young adults were more keenly interested in animation than they may have been in the day, Invader Zim would have thrived. Instead of being the sort of underground cult classic that it is, it would have become a mainstream cultural phenomenon; again, I would put it on or near the level of The Simpsons. But as it was, it was released a little too early on a network that didn't support them, to an audience that largely wasn't ready for it.
And maybe that's okay. The one benefit, at least in hindsight, of "failed" projects like Invader Zim is that being dropped before it could really catch on just meant that it didn't stay long enough to lose steam and focus, and devolve into a run-of-the-mill, overly commercialized piece of mediocrity. It didn't outstay its welcome, and fans may decry its perceived preemptive cancellation as unfair and unjust, but there's no denying that it's cancellation went a long way towards elevating it to its cult status. Endless talks about how the show "died before its time" doubtlessly created untold amounts of word of mouth advertising for it, priming it for a resurgence in popularity during the late 2000's. All without having to make a single new episode.

The time travel episode where he kills dib is great. It shows just how evil zim is and that despite his incompetence he is a legitimate threat when he actually pulls off a scheme. Though I don't think killing off dib for good would have been good for the show itself, since the Dib/Zim rivalry is the core of the conflict.

Two things I find interesting about this show.
The first is that Zim, in his perspective, is not a bad person. He was raised in a culture that invading planets is a good thing and it gives him respect. He thinks that the altissimos love him and that his mission is something given specifically to him and that makes him not want to ruin things like the last time.
In the film it is clearly seen how much he lost confidence in himself when he discovered the truth, showing a more insecure side of Zim.
Another interesting point is Dib. The series makes it very clear that everyone hates and avoids the boy because they think he's crazy. No one, not least Gaz who knows the truth, is on his side, but that doesn't stop him from continuing to save the world from Zim's plans. I mean, he could let Zim take over the world to teach everyone a lesson, but still, he chooses to fight despite everything. This is something, in my opinion, very heroic on his part.
An optimistic part of me wanted to see the two become friends, since both are people who, surprisingly, have several aspects in common.
Well, Dib doesn't fight for selfless reasons. He's only trying to save the world to Rub it in people's faces and get them to worship him. As well as to get his fathers recognition. Zim is really a bad person. Mentally ill do to a glitch in his system. Evil in some cases do to his pettyness sure. But he's not a villain and Dib is not a hero. Zim's just a soldier following orders whose fiercely loyal to his people and wants to be seen as a soldier.
It's just two people on opposite sides. No hero or villain stuff. Just two soldiers fighting a war.
"Zim is not bad" is the strangest thing I'v read. Even if we don't speak about invasion, he made a lot of cruel things towards his irk comrades

Oh, I meant to add. Yes, people can be evil and villainous. But in Zims case, think Roman Empire. To the Roman's and a lot of us, they were the good guys. But what about everyone else?

So sure, another network would've been better for it as Nickelodeon is notorious for canceling shows too early, but as far as the content goes dont think it wouldve benefited from being more "mature". It wouldve been a little better without Nickelodeons specific restrictions but the same can be said with almost any show they aired.

Yeah, as a kid one of my FAVORITE episodes was dark harvest. I LOVED darker themes and HATED "sugar and rainbows" kind of stuff. It's not in like, an "Emo" way, but like darker shows really just had more personality.

This isn't really that well researched. It might just be that this show was slightly outside your generation, I'm not sure. Just owning the DVDs is enough to know more than what's revealed here. So just to post a few corrections;

Watching the commentary on the DVDs reveals tons of information about the creation of the show and the demise of it, to put in some more info...
Actually the original version of the destroyed city in door to door WAS going to have a statue of liberty in it but the joke was that 'New York always gets destroyed in movies' which it does, 9/11 or not.
The episodes weren't 'self contained' to that extent, the things in the previous episodes DID happen, but it was sitcom formula rather than plot arc formula, so in Bad Bad Rubber Piggy, Dib had in fact already become Zim's arch rival. Yes, Zim is evil in that episode. He's... an evil character, that's the point of the show. He's working for an evil alien race that wants to take over the universe. Duh, he's evil.
In the Christmas episode the character they show that wasn't introduced on air was Minimoose. In fact it was lampshaded in the show by Zim saying 'yep, he's been here the whole time'.
And last but most importantly, it was actually the Halloween special that started to lead to the cancellation of Zim. There were tons of these more lore-heavy science fiction episodes that were animated and aired as part of season 2--I'm guessing you didn't see them because Season 2 continued on with the Tak ship story and then some, but by that point Nick was starting to do their usual 'time slot jerk-around' trick to force shows into being cancelled because they don't like it anymore.
The Halloween special led to a number of complaints from pearl-clutchers and this caused a great deal of back and forth between Nick and Jhonen about how much creative control he could have and it was his constant attempts at telling a cynical dark humor science fiction story instead of a lolsorandom cute robot dog screamy children story that led to them putting it in the ever-changing garbage slots until the ratings dropped and they could be justified in canceling it.
I'm posting all this because I watched the movie today and this video disappointed me in its ignorance.

I haven't watched a lot of this show, but I was under the impression that Zim was supposed to be evil, at least from a human's perspective.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it would kind of make sense for Zim to kill people, since invading the Earth would involve that.
Zim is evil but is too batshit insane to see simple solutions like simply killing people. But we have for sure seen him indirectly cause countless deaths in the Ultra Peepy episode.
His goal was never to kill all humans, but to enslave and subjugate them. Killing them defeats that purpose, as then there would be nobody to acknowledge his awesomeness.
Plenty of his plans are intended to be lethal for the general populace. Using Mars to crush everything on the surface for instance.
Operation Impending Doom 2 is about infiltrating a planet to weaken it enough to be fully wiped out by the Armada.

The more Zim attempted to alter and disable Dib's past, the stronger Dib overall becomes thanks to his father's technology, ultimately leading to Dib as critically unstable as he becomes, more and more advanced to overpower Zim's current technology.
Also Zim's an Alien, hellbent on taking over or destroying earth such as all of the other Irken invaders are also doing so, in the episode Planet Jackers prior to the main episode's event, Zim is spying over his fellow invaders to see their progress, and most of them have already conquered, destroyed, and or enslaved they're respective planets that were assigned to.
So for Zim to go all out and even in some creative ways to eliminate Dib, such and sending stuffed pig dolls to his past and torment his isn't above Zim as character, childish as Zim may be he is still an alien invader.
In the second half of episode 19 "Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom" is literally a giant hologramized ego trip of a prank to fool Dib into thinking he won over Zim and grew up to become a successful Paranormal Investigator, and drive off the Irken army only to reveal that he indeed threw a muffin at Zim.
So imagine if you lived your entire life of success into your elderly years, and are just spontaneously brought back to your childhood to find out your life was fake and and catered to your goals just to take it away and prove a point.
In my perspective that's darker than the 1998 satirical film "The Truman Show".
So Zim is down right evil, no mistake of it, because his character is built that way on purpose.

I don't think that's when a show falls, most shows that I honestly think are great, are shows that were cancelled, but held a special place in the fans hearts. A show falls when it's dragged out too long and loses aspects of its greatness
The fact that the Invader Zim fandom/cult/following is still going strong nearly FIFTEEN YEARS after it's cancellation just proves how much worth it really is and why is DESERVES to be revived and given the spotlight it's always meant to be in. Either Nickelodeon needs to sell the full rights to Jhonen or give him the proper budget to continue the show and possibly bring back the original team that worked on Invader Zim.
I don't know what standards a show must meet in order to be fully revive and not just in the form of a single damn movie, but those standards must be ridiculously stupid and need to be fixed.

I actually really liked the time travel episode it really stood out to me and I always felt that Zim wasn't someone to root for he came to destroy the planet
The turn about at the end is a perfect example of true Karma the more Zim tried to push Dib to death the more of a Threat Dib Became in the end destroying Zim
It's an ending that Neither side can really be happy over as Dib is a broken person and Zim is a puddle on the floor
Until Zim undoes his actions
I always took the series as a semi Episodic series the actions that take place exist but simultaneously do not in such a way that the irrecoverable damages never happen but the actions leading up to each climax does

I think parents were scared of the show. They probably thought it was too dark, edgy, and would turn their kid into some goth emo violent kid. Hell, my mom didn't want me or my sister watching it because of that reason. It didn't stop us though, and we eventually got our way. I think it affected us positively actually, it really inspired us to create more artwork and got us to think outside the box. I started to dig into Jhonen's older works, like JTHM, Squee, and I Feel Sick. I know I'm probably too young to start exploring those works (I'm 13), but I'm letting my curiosity get the best of me.

im 1 year late but i just found this video and holy shit man there was so much about this video i wasnt too fond of. he goes on and on about things constantly and it takes up quite a bit of time over the whole video, and there were a lot of things missing like how he talks about the different voice actors, but doesnt do a side by side comparison of their voices when talking about which voice he preferred and just expects you to already know what they all sound like. Then there's really sudden shifts, like how he literally goes from talking about invader zim's copyright trouble to suddenly talking about the fucking 9/11 attacks out of absolutely NOWHERE, holy shit man. i CANNOT go over how fucking SUDDEN that "the 9/11 attacks were absolutely devastating" was when he was JUST talking about fucking gameboy advanced systems and copyright. jesus christ man i never wanna watch this ytber again theres just so much about this content i dont really like

@Nick family oriented would be accurate they tend to have shows that don't insult the intelligence of the kids watching and adults can deal with. However Grim adventures is not near as dark as invader zim and episodes like dark harvest being on any 'kid' network is kid of ridiculous. My thoughts on it probably have a lot to do with the censoring that happened to yugioh and one piece when they brought it over (any anime really), but that would be the localization companies not so much the network

When people talk about how braindead Nickelodeon is, I always think of Invader Zim. Because they had such an amazing show, and canceled it halfway through its run. By chance, if the show did get 5 seasons or was revised someway, somehow, regardless if Johnen was working on the show the entire time, it has a great chance of becoming stale. Think about SpongeBob, which aired on the same network. Yeah, they had Hillenburg the entire time (up until his death), but the show became bland after season 3. A better example would be season 2 of Invader Zim, which was already becoming bland.

Unpopular opinion : This show is better than Gravity falls. It's much darker and confident on what's trying to do, has a better soundtrack and setting, better atmosphere and the characters have more layers of complexity. Plus the humor is funnier imo.

Gravity Falls is heavily inspired by stuff like Twin Peaks and the X-Files whereas Zim was always very much its own thing, especially as it never really messed with a true overarching plot. Love both shows.

I really hope Netflix doesn’t try to water down Vasquez. I feel like this show had so so much potential. Even as a kid. I started watching the show the night pilot aired. As a kid I never understood why the show got taken off air. I want to see what an artist Nickelodeon didn’t let him do. I hope if Vasquez gets good reception from the movie I hope he can continue the series without holding back. If he wants to of course. This show was so ahead of its time. But this show along with others molded me into who I am today.

I think it's established that Zim is not really the character you should be rooting for in this show. The time travel episode really drove that point home.
I always liked Dib better than Zim, anyway. He was the only character that really cared about what was going on. Gaz knew, but had zero interest in the world around her unless it had something to do with video games or pizza.

Yeah, there a different between protagonist / antagonist and hero/ villain. Zim is the protagonist but not the hero. His job is to be comdey of the show. The person to laugh at but not root for. The person you want to see how far his plans can go but never actually succeed at carry them out. Like video says he isn't like the normal main character. He the rare opposite. Which is why the show in so unique.

Dude im not gonna lie I do not like some of your editing choices. For example: 7:42. I dont edit for a living but I will bet if I turned that in for a college project I would get a C at best. Maybe lower. I dont know why you chose to add a one minute transition but it was not a good idea. For the first mabye ten seconds I thought the video froze but then the quiet music started to kick in and I realized it was just a really poor editing choice. 16:44 as well. The lack of any audio or video before the music starts playing is very offputting.

Even back then, even as a fan of "Are You Afraid of the Dark" and "Goosebumps" and every Stephen King movie/mini-series/etc, I understood that Zim was probably something a lot of "normal fans" probably didn't like...and when it was canceled for being "too expensive", I was sad but not really heart-broken. Like, it was kinda obvious something like that would happen and I'm glad I got to experience it when it was at its best.

Invader Zim is Evil: The show.
The Main Character is trying to wipe out all Humans, the other Main Character is trying to wipe out him.
And it's not you Black and White, Good and Evil, It's more like the Tom and Jerry Formula with both character trying to outsmart each other but for most of the time none of win or one is victorious but at a Cost which they make sure to show that the character took damage even after the fight.
While there's a Rest Button like the characters you're were invested, and it left a impact.
And that's what most Invader Zim Episode do, they leave an impact it's like a Rollercoaster; it's scary,
it's never lets you take a breath,
it's Epic, and awesome to see/experience to come out Satisfied yet Worn out.
BUT most importantly fun and that's what all Cartoons are at there core, fun and Invader Zim is it's own brand of fun that some can handle and some can not, but even it's Evil Fun but it's even more Evil to not be fun.
And Invader Zim knows that rule and will always knows that rule and will be FUN.
I think after seeing what Johen Vazquez thinks of humanity (from JTHM), possibly Invader Zim prompts us to consider who the real villains are?

This Show is Iconic, the MUCh more mature theme for a kid's show has made it have a massive fanbase, most of the cartoon fans I met love this show! And it's a great show!
As a thought, you said each episode was self contained and it annoyed you that zim attacked dib for no reason, but then go on to say you didn't like how Gaz as a character didn't really grow, I don't really understand your logic with that.
But apart from that my opinion on the series is that the episodes aren't self contained, if it weren't for that damned episode where ZIm & Dib turn into bologna... But I put that down to cartoon logic, at the end of every episode we don't get to see how things got back to "Normal" we as a audience just have to accept that the problem was solved between episodes. There are so many examples in this series of that, Another good example being the one where Zim harvests all the kids organs.
If anything I would call it loosely guided with self contained moments/endings, which alot of kids shows used to do.
Anyway I'm sorry for this wall of text, I just really like Invader Zim, If a movie comes out, I really hope it captures what the show was.

IZ's storytelling impresses me that despite not following a three-act structure, everything still works so well. There is even a charm to the modern gothic style madness. Today's noisy cartoons like Spongebob and Teen Titans Go feel like the zag where Invader Zim zigs.

I've always assumed that every few episodes existed in their own timelines, and we followed along until Zim &/or Dib are in a state where they're unable to continue on then jump to the next reality.
