    Thanks mate for these more in-depth videos that don't go from rust straight to masked and painted. Going to have a crack at respraying my MK1 this christmas and it's good to know what I might need if she's a bit dirty under the skin. Cleaned about 6 handfulls of leaves, dirt and crap out from my L/R front fenders last weekend. Dreading taking them off to see under.

    Brilliant videos.
    I must say after watching these that I'm relieved I went the Boxster route when I decided to enter the hairdresser's cars scene. The Miata & the Boxy are very similar cars, it's just that the German cousin doesn't rust at all.

    It’s great to see someone take the time to carry out a proper repair. I’m curious - at 6.31 the sill looks to me like it has very slight traces of rust left. Once you treat the rust is that good to go or in a money no object restoration would you need to cut it all out? .

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration

    Very good video that loads of details. I have done one side of my car but the other is still to do. Interesting method tucking in the new panel slightly. Can I ask why you use sealet rather then weld on the lip please?

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it needs sealing to make it water tight and the sealants you can get today are super strong so well upto the job.
      if sealant then welding is used it burns the sealant away so the wheel arch is no longer water tight.

    Hi mate, great stuff. What coatings did you use?
    * Was it Zinc coating for the inner - what brand?
    * What did you spray on the arch before fitting - weld through primer?
    * What sealant in the caulking gun?
    Am I correct in saying the arch/panel is lap welded on instead of butt to butt? If so, why didn't you plug weld through to the other side? Is it because what you did is strong enough in this instance? Does lapping not change the profile of the body curves?
    Those welds look spot on - sometimes mine are cold. What speed / amps did you use? Assuming .8 wire?
    Sorry for all the questions - i'm trying to hone in on the right way to do things.
    Thanks a lot

    • @finnerzUK
      @finnerzUK 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It probably was zinc primer although you could also fire some actual paint on top
      Yes he used weld through primer or it would spatter
      Tiger seal is a pretty decent sealent or a panel bond
      He used a lap weld. To get it to work you need to use the joggler the tool he used on the edge creates a flange to offset the panel. It allows it to sit flush . It makes for an easier weld as you have thicker metal essentially then grind it down after . Although the lip has a chance of collecting water and rusting again . The weld through primer helps but it’s still a risk . Butt joints will last far longer but are harder to weld and you also have to match the cuts on both panels

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration

    Hey, I need to do similar work on my car as there are no patch panels available for my car I've had to cut replacements from a donor car. Where you folded the patch panel under the existing panel for the arch would you suggest using a flange tool to make it fit under and welding them together or but welding the two pieces together?

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes using a flange tool would be better but is more time consuming and harder, we have tried to make the video as simple as possible :)

  • @mkdave1955
    @mkdave1955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you knock down the weld before grinding or is it not necessary as you only have maybe 1 mm of filler difference between the bottom arch and the upper arch?

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In our years of experience we have never had a problem or seen a problem with it, the panels are all waxoild afterwards inside to protect and its also a matter of cost, if money wasnt an issue then they would be butt welded , a butt joint can be done but most people dont have the money to invest in these cars or welding skills to do this themselves and this is what these videos are aimed at.
      money is always the object or we would all have the very best work done but the cost would outweigh the car :D
      hope this clears things up :)

    • @yorkshirecarrestoration
      @yorkshirecarrestoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1
