    Pretty much my childhood local theme park. Remember the day I was told it was shutting down and I was DEVESTATED and that emotion still lies with me today

    I loved Camelot 😭😭 loved watching the jousting whilst having a bit of lunch and knightmare and whirlwind were my favourite rides. Of course a special mention to Dragon flyer - but it was so loud if you were in the front 😂 omg the rack!!!! I wish it was still open 😞 I remember the log flume too. My early memories were in the 90’s when I used to go with the brownies and I remember the sooty and sweep show as well as those mentioned above. Thankfully I went in 2012 quite a few times to experience everything for the final times!

    Never went to Camelot (im too young tbh i would have only been like 5 or 6 when it closed) but this video is really intriguing to see how much people loved it and had fond memories of the park. The theming sounded amazing and the ride as well as the entertainment sounded so great.

    Hi, Khadim here. So sad watching and seeing parks go, especially when they were apart of your childhood. I can’t say I’ve experienced Camelot however, I can relate the emotional connection you can get when losing your childhood memories. I’ve experienced this mainly with Thorpe Park and Chessington and the lost rides as they were my main childhood parks. Especially seeing the Rangers County and Canada Creek go from Thorpe still has me sad to this day.

    • @Rachael8989
      @Rachael8989 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Khesora I can relate to you with Thorpe Park. It was the theme park I visited most as a child and it is unbelievable how much it has changed - they could make a whole other park with all the old rides/shows/the farm/the Thorpe Park Rangers (I wish they would!) Today’s Thorpe Park is very aimed at ‘young adults/teens’ and thrill seeking, back then there was something for everyone and the park had charm and a fun, magical atmosphere. Things have changed so much since the 90s though. 😞

    The queues for rides here in the early 90s was insane especially in the summer holidays....incredibly popular.

    What a great watch! I miss Camelot it was a great theme park. Also remember riding nightmare which was great, it’s a shame to hear no one bought it, oh well owners shot themselves in the foot with that one. Wonder what will happen to that land, would love to see a new theme park there 😂

  • @broomy6282
    @broomy6282 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Absolutely loved Camelot, spent a lot of time there during my childhood. Thanks for the memories. Couple of big things you missed were the original Excalibur which was a pirate ship on a sword that went fully round all the way upside down with hang time. They also used to have a a dragon in a cell by the entrance where you could press the button and the dragon would wake up. The place was really well themed back in the day. They used to have go karts, ballon chase ride amongst many others.

      Michael Broom ahh yes, wasn’t the dragon called ‘Puff’? I love little animatronics like that. Reminded me of the dragon at Chessington that’s been there for years.

    I miss Camelot, I went often that I can remember and from a fairly young age right up until it closed
    The diesel powered Dragon Flyer was my favourite and I can remember most of the rides, in its day it was the best theme park in the UK but sadly with Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Alton Towers not that far away it had tough competition

  • @Lovegood394
    @Lovegood394 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Camelot was my childhood. My aunt and uncle both worked there and employees used to get 2 tickets a year, so they gave them to us (a family of 4 with two young children at the time) so we’d go every summer. My uncle was an engineer so we saw a lot of backstage stuff. I was able to go into the cage with the mechanical Puff Dragon, we met the knights and their horses many times, and got to see lots of cool stuff about the rides. I was devastated when the park closed, as were obviously my family.

    I live right next to Camelot I used to go every week as they gave an offer to all local u16s £50 for a full season pass. We loved it, I have so many memories... Going with friends from school, asking a girl out on Excalibur 🤣 school trips, the dodgems in the castle. Sorely missed ps the 90s were magic

      Sounds brilliant haha! I grew up down south but the fairground came to Oxford this week which led me to going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on rollercoasters and that’s how I came across Camelot / Knightmare, I think I would have loved this place as a kid if I’d have gone

  • @RTPxPJ
    @RTPxPJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I live down the road from Camelot so went there loads of times when I was a kid, was gutted when it closed. I think part of the reason it closed though was because of it's lack of thrill seeking rides, yeah they had Knightmare and Excalibur II but apart from that there wasn't much else from what I remember. It's fine when you're a little kid cause smaller coasters and rides can provide you with all the thrill you need, but as I got older I found myself going to Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Alton Towers a lot more as they had bigger rides and coasters. I miss Camelot now it's gone though, miss the convenience of having a theme park on my doorstep.

    This video is so great. I was chatting with my best friend tonight about Camelot and she recommended you to me as she knew you had done some Camelot videos!
    I used to go to Camelot for my birthday every year as a kid. I remember Tower of Terror, as that was my favourite. I had no idea they got rid of that before it even closed.
    I also remember there being a massive soft play area, I remember Excalibur (the original version) and even an actual mini-water park! And laser tag (which may or may not have been on roller skates). Absolute madness. XD
    The entertainment was definitely one of the things that made this park stand out. The jousting and bird of prey shows were so good. The magic show was with Merlin, if I remember correctly.
    Gosh, the nostalgia! I couldn’t believe it when you said it only closed in 2012. I have no idea why I stopped going. :( Guess I just grew up. As an adult though I should’ve just took myself there lol.
    Thanks so much for making this. Can’t wait to watch all your other Camelot videos!

    I used to go there as a kid in the 90s, I loved it. As others have mentioned, the sheer loudness of the Dragon Flyer used to scare me. I used to think it would be a really fast and scary ride because it was so loud. Now as an adult, finding out about it's uniqueness is amazing, the thing made such a racket because it was essentially a fuel powered train on a track. A driver had to sit in that thing all day!

    First went to Camelot back in 2003, because I was 7 years old at the time it was perfect in terms of how thrilling the rides were, as it was a good step between Gulliver's Warrington and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. I remember the knight's joust show, Whirlwind and The Rack the most fondly. I went again in 2004, but then I never took the opportunity to go back which I regret as I never got to ride Knightmare. Makes me feel old to think it was 16 years ago since I last went!

    I have so many memories here, absolutely loved this park, used to go with my family and every time we’d go I’d take a friend with us, I’ve got great memories on all the rides that were there around the time you’ll have been there too! Your memories sound just like mine! If only we could turn back time! I used to race my dad down pendragons plunge, and later on my brother and wife too, one slide never worked either! Haha, It’s sad seeing it in such a sorry state! This theme park also got my younger brother who has downsyndrome into theme parks and rollercoasters, we loved watching the jousting and the magic show! His favourite ride was the catapiller ride and the pirate ship ride! It was also the first themepark I went to with my now wife, and we have lots of memories there too! Absolutely gutted its gone! 😭

    This was the theme park my family would always go to, in the 80's mainly because it was the cheaper than Alton Towers. I still remember walking into the courtyard and seeing the Dragon in the cage. It probably looked ropey, and I don't think we visited Camelot after Disney Land, but at the time I was memorized by it. The show was good, still remember when one of the comic relief characters at the jousting got his tongue cut off and blood poured out his mouth (don't think they'd show anything like that now without a parental warning!). My only other memory is psyching myself up to ride on the Tower of Terror, watching the big monster reaching out through the tower. Iconic.

    Was lucky enough to visit the park in the late 80's and back then it was in the premier League of UK theme parks.
    As a kid it was the theming which really stood out and has given me happy memories I still remember today.
    I recall Merlin magically revealing doves, the fear of the tower of terror wondering if it actually did go upsidedown in a loop?
    Really hope we get a medieval themed park again in the UK.

    Remember going on the original Excalibur, I was absolutely petrified when I got up close to it. Thought it was just going to be like a normal pirate ship till it done a full 360. Going on that ride stopped all my fear of other rides. Nothing I won't go on now and my kids have been going on roller coasters since they were tall enough. Think my son was 7 when he first went on the big one in Blackpool. Speaking of which, he got a photo with you on Sunday at the pleasure beach entrance just before it opened so thanks for that. When Camelot did the jousting show. I’d say it was the best in the UK, way better than Wars of the Roses Live. I used to go there back around 2009-12 and it was extraordinary. The performers were sociable and you could get a picture with them. They sometimes made the show more entertaining and add things on beyond the script.

    Great video! My earliest memory of Camelot was going in year 6 at primary school and being terrified queuing for the beast which used to be inside a cave near the entrance. They should have never got rid of the tower of terror especially for a pinfari! I would have rather them spent the money on refurbishing the ride until knightmare came along. Would have been a great skyline with them 2 next to each other!

    My best memories of Camelot was riding the tower of terror for the first time, also my first inversion on a coaster, also taking my daughter before it closed we had a lovely day and I'm glad she got to experience it before it closed

    The flight on ride was my favourite as a kid. When I first went I couldn’t go on much due to height, I was tiny. So I loved all the rides that I could mainly the balloon ride and the dragon!!
    I would love to of been able to take my kids now!

    I'd love to see a section on the forum you're working on where people can share their old photos from themepark visits.
    Also- a video on American Adventure would be great. So many amazing memories there. 😁
    Keep up the amazing work Shawn- love your videos! 👍

    I went to Camelot when I was 5 I’m now 14 and my brother was 3 he is now 12 . I remember it all and my dad took us around the remains and took us to the castle (didn’t go in of corse) I miss it. I watched the show and had a picture with Merlin. I pulled out the sword in the stone. We went to the play area (I was terrified to go down the slide because it was dark and I was young. It’s been years now:( . I remember walking down the road to the park and being exited when I saw the sign and I remember seeing the adverts for the park. Every time we went past We could see the coaster and now it’s gone. I remember the kiddy coasters too. I don’t remember the flat rides tho. My mum went when she was young too. Such a creative park gone to ruins :( . What’s next : destroying the rest and leaving it for nature?

    I used to go to camelot every year for my birthday for probably 4 years, and with my church we'd go on an annual trip there too. I have a photo of me and friends at the park when i'm about 4 as well so that's 1995.
    Tower of terror was great when I was only just tall enough to ride it, so thrilling. I remember if you went on the gauntlet you were like revered as being super brave at 9 years old. It was fairly intense but so rough, a real headbasher, it took the loop quite slowly so that was pretty thrilling.
    I always found dungeons of doom really creepy tbh, most of it was underwhelming it's just some parts were about torture and starvation and I think probably got into my over active imagination a bit too much when paired with medieval history lessons at school. It smelled like a dungeon too, that weird dusty damp smell in the queue.
    I have really clear memories of all the smells, obviously powered coasters are electric and venom had that static on metal smell. When I went on 13 at alton towers on opening it was weirdly nostalgic queueing because it had the same smell.
    I really liked the layout of different levels and it was a really nice nature walk to transition between areas. Bluebell wood was the sort of village they'd put in the forest and you could peek in to these medieval style cottages through the windows and they had mannequins in there frozen in their daily business. It was really immersive but mannequins are creepy any way and they didn't look well kept even then.
    There was also the huge red dragon just inside who was an animatronic that spoke to you welcoming you into the park when you pushed a button, that was really fun and immersive.
    I had a lot of really great days out there. I would have stopped going probably around 2003 as I was getting a bit too old and bored of it so I never saw knightmare. The rack always scared me because the restraints never felt very secure. I wasn't a tall kid so i'd slip around all over the place in the seat, so it was thrilling because I felt like I was going to fall out! I started going to southport for regular birthdays after that as back then it was more like a proper theme park.

    I live in Portsmouth so only actually went once when I was around 7/8 the highlight for me was the show. My memory is quite hazy with which rides were there to be honest seeing as I’m now 30 but I’ve always remembered the show. Shame it’s no longer in operation. Was a nice reminder this video. I can confirm also that Portsmouth still has a Wimpy which is above the arcade at Clarence pier. Wimpy has not aged well is my only opinion.

Make sure you and Shawn look after yourselves. 😊

    Sadly never got to visit Camelot, but I definitely remember seeing Knightmare when travelling to Blackpool. Shame Southport couldn’t save it.

  • @urbansnipe

    the reason the theming on the knightmare coaster was removed was due to health and safety changes meaning the whole length of the track needed walkway alongside as it would make evacuation of the ride train very difficult without it due to it being enclosed. This affected quite a few rides in the uk

    Mid to late 90s were the best when Granada owned it, went a few times with school, we went back a few years before it closed with the family and it was nothing like how I remember it from the 90s.
