Kees, I want to tell how much I appreciate your videos! They are so well done, no blaring background music, smooth, wonderful! The way you make them it is like we get to be there. Thank you for this!
This is the neighborhood where I live!!!! Wow, 7 years ago!!! I can hardly remember there was ever a train ticket agency (10:20) that is not there any more because people buy ticket on Internet nowadays. What a video!!! Thank you very much
The uniqueness of Shanghai is the city is bustling with business sentiments but yet Shanghainese seem calm and endogenous. Like a contrasting modern metropolitan and old colonial landscape all into one....nice, especially in winter. Place to visit!
I think China is very modern, and the traffic quite in order, compared to for example India or Egypt. The only disturbing thing (have been to China myself but not Shanghai) is that left turning trafficants never yield to pedestrians, so they have to walk between the turning cars, very dangerous. The mopedist and cyclist are also really annoying, especillay when they drive on the wrong side of the road and between pedestrians on the crosswalks.
worldtravelimagesnet China is not modern at all in many regions, only the 1st tier cities may look somewhat developed. In the 3rd tier cities you better have toilet paper wherever you go. Even in this video I can see that Shanghai has a long way to go to actually look completely developed, the tile on the sidewalks and many apartment buildings need a major refresh.
Surprised to see so many people . Yet no jobless youths hanging around, no homeless people begging for quarters. Not even seeing idle people doing nothing. Everyone seemed moving with a purpose. Guess Shanghai not in urban decay just yet.
because china has hukou system that barred foreign rural worker from entering and stay in shanghai for shelter, sometimes you see beggar in subway though
Great video series, kees. Have you considered subway ridding series? Now many cities around the world have their own subway systems; I always think ridding on the subways let you see the cities through its people up close. As geographers said "people makes the place".
Loved your video, gave me a real feel of Shanghai, I want to come there and visit. I want to take advantage of the 144hr rule. Thanks for sharing this, great job!!
awesome city!, was there for a week in june, will definitely go again, great food and people and clean and safe, unlike most citys in the uk where i live. there is also a lot more electric vehicles cars, bikes, scooters and buses there since this was filmed, so most roads are quieter and very little traffic fumes. thousands of rental bicycles around as well!
People always see the modern side of Shanghai city and this is the old side of Shanghai city that tourists never walk through. This video is obviously not taken recently, around 2010-2013 I guess.
This old side still looks modern. And quite clean. It,s a bit dirty but not terrible. The newer areas are more glamorious. But why do a lot of chinese men smoke?
Looks more like current New Delhi (2019) We all know India is 15 years behind from China so every Indian city will look poor than Chinese cities Don't forget Shanghai is the most developed city of China and other cities might look poor than Shanghai In 2019, india have atleast 10 cities which looks like Shanghai (except in skyscrapers) of 2012 Those cities are Pune, surat, Gurugram, ahmedabad, Coimbatore, and more
What a lack of respect they have in China for pedestrians. When the traffic light is green, cars, motorcycles and bicycles continue to pass as if nothing happened.
Yep, I can already feel it. The cousins that started well enough witch chess, gunpowder, philosophy... and still can't make it. It's not bad though. All things considered. (Cultural Revolution) This looks nowhere near as bad as SOME OTHER (New Delhi) cities. The ambient is suprisingly calm. There is occasional honking but the traffic is overall great. Suprisingly good ambient tracks. The stopping buses make the strangest sounds.
trace of this Shanghai walkabou

The country does a good job hiding its poor from external eyes.

+xiang Herr 首先,发展中国家没什么丢人的,不发展才丢人。其次,你来美国看看就知道你说的那些特征也不是发展中国家的专利。
+xiang Herr then watch the video " walking in HK" lol
+xiang Herr 我们本来就是发展中国家
中国本来就是发展中国家,我们现在正在努力发展,我们也要看到中国的许多进步。

Unattractive area; I hope the whole city isn't looks the same. I suppose something will have changed since 2012.
slafito44 x
Every city has unattractive areas and back alleys. These unattractive areas are still much better than some areas in NYC and Chicago
