    That Electric Mistress sounds absolutely stunning. I have a reissue Maxon FL-301 that I have dearly loved for going on close to 20 years, but that EM is a cut above, no question.

    Dan's vamp at 39:00 is inspiring! Makes me want to pick up a guitar and play something. Gotta love that absurd board and I'm amazed at the sound and size of the mini boards.

    I think the winner is both! I personally think the best board is some combination of the two. I really love the SL Drive and Angel Wing. Dan has the reverb and the delay covered on his side too. And the Kingsley

    You guys are the best. I was one of the guys requesting this video and you guys listened and that is just too cool. Thanks!
    The Hammond organ bit brings on a very good point- you guys should compare a real Leslie or Vibratone cabinet with a couple of Leslie emulation pedals, Univibe, and some other traditional stompboxes like phaser, chorus, flanger, and tremolo.
    Dial in the stompboxes to get as close to the Leslie sound as possible and compare individually and maybe make some conclusions about what combination of pedals might get you in the ballpark. I feel like the Leslie sound is really complex and each of the more traditional modulation stompboxes can emulate different aspects of the Leslie sound - the doppler effect, the phasing, the tremolo created by the spinning speaker, etc. I've even heard of people splitting their guitar signal to two amps, high passing one and applying phase or chorus and low passing the other and applying tremolo....

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jake Stewart Music yes Jake, we are definitely doing this in 2017 ;)

    • @jakestewartmusic
      @jakestewartmusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweet! Thanks! By the way, a great tremolo to check out for that clip is the Moog MF Tremolo. I use mine for pseudo-rotary effects with the "Tone" set just below noon and the "Shape" just above noon. Add an expression pedal to ramp the speed, and it gets a pretty cool rotary/trem effect.

  • @JDODify
    @JDODify 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm, I think part of the reason that Dan's board sounds better is cos he knows the pedals so well and has them really dialled in to perfection and can play them well. There's a lot of stuff on Dan's board that I'd only use for odd riffs so couldn't justify the crazy size!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +richab88 Cheers Rich. Good clean power to the pedals is all we do. Then it's just being on the volume pot and watching your physical position. Our single coil guitars hum with the best of them, but you can't hear it (much) when you're playing. As soon as you're not, volume down. Cheers and thanks for watching!

    • @kariabspoel2483
      @kariabspoel2483 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      richab88 the ilitch (or something) backplate, which was sold by suhr earlier, has worked really well for me. Our practise place is in an industrial building and has very tricky electrics but that does a decent job when stacked or noiseless aren't an option. Just remeber to check that your middle pu is not rp or it won't work.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That Pedal Show actually, I meant it as a suggestion for the original comment (sorry for the lack of tags)... I have it on one strat, not on the tele for exactly the reason that it may compromise something however intangible but immeasurably important in the "tone" - 60 cycle hum is part of rock'n roll and I will accept it :)

  • @Yupppi
    @Yupppi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Few times I've thought if I should get just a cheap Tone City for testing out some effects I don't use that much but here it was pretty clear how "restricted" the tone gets with those. Not like you couldn't probably do Zakk Wylde impression with Angel Wing but with different things it might be too "restricted". Well, the phaser is actually the weird sounding from Tone City. On the other hand, I'll buy that Golden Plexi. It's a one setting pedal but it does sound great. Even without the "for a cheap pedal" note. I hope Mick managed to satisfy people who ask cheaper pedals too!

    Great video guys!!!! I will have to re-listen to it with high end headphones. Its crazy how the mini board sounds so good, but Dan's massive board just has more depth to the sound. As always I doubt the audience at a gig will tell the difference but us guitarists could ;)

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +hollywoodactress Mick here. The whole 'can the audience tell' is a really interesting debate. They can't on one level - ie the specific sounds themselves - but if they're there to listen to your band (rather than just be entertained at a party or whatever), they will absolutely discern the difference between an average performance and one where you are genuinely inspired. In our opinion you have a better shot at the latter if you have the most inspiring sounds available to you. Cheers!

    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! This video convinced me again that how great mini pedals are... Instead of getting mega board like that, I would definitely go for Hot Rod Deville 60w 4x10, American Strat and Tube screamer. They will do cost still less and enough for the rest of my life hahaha!

    If I watch anymore videos I'll be looking for a CE-1 and mistress. Damn they sound good. I couldn't be happier with the AEx4 at $150 US. Great pedal. Love the show! Your enthusiasm is infectious and dangerous.

    Great idea making this comparison! I could live with the less dynamic crunch section but the mod stuff was below par, even through youtube compression... but I have to admit that tc makes very good bang-for-buck pedals as the delay and reverb were not that weak in comparison to the big board gear. Maybe the new mxr minis could do a better job in the modulation?
    Suggestion for a new a-b, even if there would be three: pls demo the three thorpy dirt pedals - peacemaker, warthog and gunshot - and stack them. No one has done that properly yet and having the gs has me hankering for more, but which? :)

    how nice is it that my pedal board has 4 of Mick´s board? Sl Drive, Tube Screamer, Summer Orange and Hall of Fame. The only thing is I use regular Tube Screamer and Mini HOF. hehehe. I love the SL at low gain settings as an always on and use volume knob to clean it. Amazing for funk and easy to control everything while singing. The phaser being just a every once in a while pedal I think the SO does the job and I have a good sounding very portable pedalboard

      +lebroucke Excellent! Nothing wrong with any of that! I have a lot of love for the SL in particular. Very cool. Thanks for watching!

      @jeremiahmountain2460 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lebroucke you should try the SL Drive at 18V for more headroom. You can also crank the volume n turn the gain off or barely on n tone to taste, that's a great sound

    That royal overdrive is one of the best sounding pedals I have heard in your well recorded videos.
    How about looking at strings? Dont think you guys have done that? Would love that. Even go old school, acoustric strings on p90 guitar perhaps? Nickel, core, wound et al et all

    Is there anything to be said for an episode of "That Bass Pedal Show"? Could even involve a guest or two if needs be.
    Cheers, guys. Love the show.

      +astrangecement We'd absolutely need guests. Dan and I aren't bass players. Interesting for sure, but I don't have a clue. Precision, SVT and 8x10 is everything I want to know about bass. ;0)

      David Chamberlain: Nothing like a real Leslie. The only Pedal I'm aware of that separates top and bottom rotors correctly is Leslie's own Pedal. But I'm an organist so I'm picky lol.

      the dls rotosim separates them aswell i believe :)

      Agreed. There are a bunch on the market and very few sound anything like a Leslie. Last I checked, most Hammond guys were using a Ventilator, when they couldn't have the real thing or a Motion Sound Pro3T. I like Alesis' Midiverb4, Leslie sim; you can actually hear the rotor glide to a stop, pointing in some random direction, LOL. but the downside is you can either switch slow/fast or brake, but never both without some kind of MIDI workaround. PSP's L'Otary is amazing, but it's software.

    Great video! Especially useful as I start to travel more. One request: I'm gearing up to make a record, and I would love to hear how you guys treat pedals/effects differently if you're in the recording studio! When Mick mentions "I hope it comes through in the audio," I found myself thinking about this question.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rob Flax Hey Rob. It depends entirely on the individual situation, no guidelines really. What I'm referring to in the video is that there's always more sonic info/physical experience in the room than there ever is through the mics, and that goes for every guitar sound ever recorded. We try to make it as 'real' as possible for TPS, but no mic/recording system is as sophisticated as the sum of your senses in the room.
      We are hoping to do a video on how we record sounds, which might help you get some ideas about how you'd go about it. Best advice is find a great engineer/producer and seek their advice. It's a skill beyond me and Dan!

    Do you think you guys could cover modeling pedals vs the actual amp? So something like the Mesa flux through an affordable amp against a legit boogie? Could be pretty interesting to compare

    • @GitShiddy
      @GitShiddy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea especially with more & more amp makers making pedals based on their own amps. Friedman do it, Mesa, Diezel, Bogner loads of companies have.

    I used to love mini pedals (1590a), but now I just want giant things! Lol, got a bk butler tube driver, a tonebender clone in a big old school enclosure, and a ce-1 which dwarves all others lol. Had to get a 40"x18" board haha

    Like all the comments show, your show is the end of level baddies of tone show (think commodore 64/pre streetfighter arcade console baddies). Proper all killer no filler tone-meister videos. Thats some serious board right there. Its broader than broadway
