Here we'll show you how to disassemble the Toyota front closed knuckle steering joint. These Toyota Knuckles are found on many solid axle Toyota trucks as well as Land Cruisers. The one we are working on is a 1993 FZJ 80 Land Cruiser.
Special thanks to 360 performance rotors and NITRO Gear and Axle for supplying the parts.

Thanks for your support!
I just rebuilt my 94 locked 80 by using this video- Thanks! I would like to suggest to all viewers to use at least 5 to 6 tubes of moly sta lube per side, 3 is simply not enough. Put alot of lube on the spindle bushing and outer axle surface union. Joint should be 3/4 full of lube when done. Trunion bolts and nuts are torqued to 71 ft lbs, and the 8 spindle bolts need 34 ft lbs. Giterdone!
Hi from the other side of the world! Thanks Jonesy for all your help on rebuilding the axle assembly on my Aussie Series 80 Landcruiser your instructions were invaluable! I look forward to seeing more from your Chanel . Thanks mate😀👍
Thank you for the host show and also big thank to the camera dude, captured detailed picture of events and parts.
Thank you very much for a great video! I just did the Birfields, bearings, seals, wipers, etc....on my '94 FZJ80 this weekend. This video was very helpful. I set my computer up on a step stool in the garage, and wrapped the keyboard with Saran Wrap so I could pause and rewind without trashing the keyboard. It is a greasy job! I went through 2 rolls of paper towels.
Greetings from the UK & East Africa. Jonesy's you surper video information on Rebuild of 4wd front axle, is probably the best presentation I have seen. I have subscribed & will be watching out for future videos on Land Cruisers from your channel !!😊
Thanks Colin!
This is the most detailed and best video on knuckle rebuild. I finally did it myself with the help of this video. One thing I learned is not all the time it is bad seal that let differential leak but it's over filled differentials that will leak in to bearing assembly. My car's seals looked alright but Express lube guys over filled differentials.
Super video on Rebuild of your 4wd Toyota Front Axle.
Glad you liked it!
I did this this past weekend. HELPED ALOT. Glad I watched every aspect of it. I dont know how I would have put the axle back into the birf if I hadn't.
Thanks mate-good ,laid back, straight forward well spoken and well filmed, keep doin' them.
Excellent video, well explained. Thank you for doing this. Definitely buy from your website. You just gained one more customer!!! Thank you.
Thanks Ray, appreciate the support!
Pretty good instructional video. One final point on the shims and tension. There's a tool you can use to test the resistance when pulling side to side. All depends on what tyres you're running. And don't forget to pack not only the bearings with greasw but the housing as well
Good Video my friend. I also do vids on these vehicles. I'm a DIY guys, not a professional and do most of this in my home garage or on the driveway. Good detail and editing of the final video. For these vids it would be a great touch to at least mention the tightening torques for folks who may not have the experience level you have on reassembling. Good job, I've subbed.
Fabulous. I had some difficulty setting the pre load on my 100 LC, but your video made things much easier. Thank you.
wow badass video! if I had the parts I would run out and get started on my 80. thank you!
Dang man awesome 2 part video I’m actually about to do this to my fj80. Love the channel
Thanks
I have a 1st gen 4x4. I like the grease on the felt tip.
You should show the proper use of a spring gage to set the knuckle bearing preload (4-8lbs) for the nubes. Buy the moly grease by the standard tube because you have to pack the knuckle which is easier to do before installing the spindle. One should check the brass bushing for wear. It will cause leaks if too worn out.
No need to install silicone to hold the gaskets in place just some dabs of grease will hold them fine.
Use Marlin or Trail gear inner seals. They are better to prevent leaking after coating the lip with synthetic grease.
The best Video for the 4WD toyota front axle rebuild. Awesome video. For the Axle grease tube, I actually used the toothpaste squeeze gadget and gets all of the grease out and faster with less of a job and more fun.
U R the best How to-Man ever ! infinite THANX!!
Very nice video. Great detail. Thanks for making it and thanks to the camera man. Clay
most of the way through mine, these videos did the trick! i think you skipped putting the speed sensor on, but it can go on after the dust shield so no biggie
Great video.
Skipped a few little bits for first timers like me .
Upper and lower bearings go in around the 5 min mark not sure which way(suppose i will know when i pull them out )
Also didnt see speed sensor go in.
But thats just nerves on my part lol.
Thnx again
Guess its time to get greasy ...
Great detail thanks for your help. Go the CRUISER
These videos are AWESOME.
As I've said earlier awesome explanations. Thanks again
Amazing performance!
Thank you for this tutorial!!! Super helpful!
The tapered spacers are usually called cone washers.
awesome vid bro ........shout out from Trinidad an tobago!
Thanks for the very informative and extremely helpful video!
Yes it will eventually get there. There is no good way to lube it after it is together.
Great video
I'm getting ready to do my 1997 80series front end, are you using the same grease for everything? What kind of Grease is it and where should I order it?
Thanks
This is a great video. I would love to know how tight the lower trunion nuts should be. I already busted a stud from too much torque
80ft lb 108Nm
Absolute legend mate, cheers
Thanks so much for the video.
very detailed video, thanks heaps!!!
Great video!
Excellent job on the repair, and the video. Is there a left and right rotor since they are slotted?
Most premium wheel bearing grease will have moly in it.
great video,thanks heaps!
one question the top and lower bearings in the swivel hub( in the knuckle) what grease did you use, my manual says to use molybdenum disulphide lithium base grease common sense tells normal high temp wheel bearing grease
thanks Donna
Great video man
Slee sells a tool just for lubing the spindle.
How did you clean out the Birf's? Did you stick them in parts washer. I figured all the old grease would need to come out before install, but wasn't mentioned in the video. Awesome video and thanks. From Wenatchee
Jonesys,
This video is great for me.
I have a question. My front left wheel locks up in 4wd when the steering wheel is all the to the left. I got my 85 hilux used, and the previous owner started customizing it, but didn't complete. Any idea what causes that? It sucks being in 4wd when you're in tight trails, needing the tightest left turn, and your front left is dragging.
Really cool dude! Do I have to replace the bearing lock nut every time I do this maintance or the old is just good?
The old one should be fine as long as the tabs are still good on the tab plate.
Let's put it this way. I drove my LC for about 5000 miles after purchasing it, only to discover that the lock nut was missing!! Not to be recommended though.
what wheel bearing grease do you use? conventional or synthetic gease?
Awesome video thank you.
Can you clean the Birfields without disassembling them?
me quedo muy claro y ahora voy a hacer mantencion en mi serie 80, lo unico fome que en mi pais es dificil de encontrar repuesto
hay que encargarlos a EEUU
Be sure to top off the gear lube in the diff also.
tpcoachfix yup. I’m freaking out thinking “No, you can’t put the spindle on yet! You haven’t packed the hub yet!!”
good camera job
Did you replace the wheel baring races?
So you don't need to fill with gear lube afterwards?
Lockout hubs available for FJ80 axles?
u dont change the bushing in the spindel?
Jonesys,
This video is of what I need to do. I've got bad seals
I have replaced my belts, alternator, starter, and thermostat myself. Time for the next level.
I have two questions. I got my 85 used, and the previous owner started customizing it, but didn't complete. My front left wheel locks up in 4wd when the steering wheel is all the to the left. Any idea what causes that? It sucks being in 4wd when you're in tight trails, needing the tightest left turn, and your front left is dragging.
Also, I've got a lot of creaking coming from down there at turning low speed. What is up with that?
It turned out to be loose U bolt nuts.
What size diameter PVC pipe did you use?
So at 16:00 are you squeezing 2 8oz tubes or squeezing 2 4 oz.
Thier is supposed to be shims on the bottom and top king pin bearings to get the right preload on the bearings. Didn't see u put any on, why not?
Powerhouse8131 Landcruiser models with the coil suspension live axle in the video have a change in design. Rather than shims on the top and bottom like on the earlier axles (which helped center the CV correctly in the swivel hub), now shims only get fitted to the top king pin bearing cap to adjust necessary pre-load or crush of the bearings
thanks alot, this helped me
Thanks So much..
Help me so so much..
Excellent
very useful !
Don't you change the spindle bush? There's an upgraded needle roller bearing and modified bush. What about speedi sleeves on the shaft seal surface? I did many of these when I worked for Toyota.
spycrow lye When my HJZ79 blew a wheel bearing I purchased axle spindles with the needle roller bearing upgrade, was around $180 each. I've found the brass bushings don't wear as bad if being used on Part Time 4x4 axles. For full time 4x4 models the roller bearing spindles is definitely a bonus
Es mi pasión desde rd muy buen video
hose clamp wont work for mine, easy to take apart mission impossible to put back together, i had to put the joint in a vice put axle on top put pressure on axle and work clip in groove with a screw driver, my splines dont stick as far past the ring as his, is reason clamp didnt work
I had problems with the worm drive on the clamp hitting the bell, answer a suitably wide enough zip tie tightened over the ring, works a treat.
excellent
There one part I don't agree with. The bottom bearing support should be tighten first. If you have too small a shim on top the bearings can be damaged when tightened with a gun.
Purchase the knuckle rebuild kit at www.duiser.com
Where are you located? I need this on my 93 FJ 80 but can’t do it myself. Need someone in Dallas area who knows how...
We are a long way from Dallas. PNW
Спасибо! Senk yoy!
Неплохо , весьма неплохо ...
Молодец мужик
Not enough grease!
Dido
I can hear the cameraman breathe
This guy is a hack. Skipped so many steps and techniques. No torque wrench. The use of the wrong adhesives etc..........Must be a uti grad. I wouldn't let him touch my vehicle.
+ToolandMachineWorks What steps did he skip?
