Building a guitar solo from a quiet few notes to a blistering scream takes patience, time, and a talent for musical phrasing. It also demands a thorough understanding of how guitars, puckups, and amps work together to create feedback, dissonance, and harmonic resonance. This solo is amazing because it demonstrates all of these qualities. Lots of young (and old) guitarist can demonstrate mastery of some of these qualities, but Grace here demonstrates mastery of all of them. And this is all happening under bright lights, with cameras rolling, for a massive TV audience. She is something special.

I am a guitarist and I think the gtr solo does a great job for this particular song. Yes, you’ll be able to name other more technical guitarists who play at a million miles per hour but I think Grace’s solo was considered and she left breathing space in between. She’s only 18 so she’ll only get better.

I certainly appreciate Ms. Bowers’s grace in dealing with criticism. And someone posted a really mean spirited criticism today that reeked of envy. It was condescending and spiteful and unfortunate.
I will say one thing that really bothers me though: I had never heard of her and started researching her and saw that she was all over the place in the press. many people were lauding her as the new great hope in the blues.
The new great Hope almost always seems to be a white person. They are often a very photogenic person.
Given the talent of people like Kingfish Ingram and Eric Gales, I find this almost like propaganda. We are promoting these young, good looking, usually white people as almost a great white hope in blues.
I have nothing against white people playing blues, in fact, I happen to be one of them. But I have to say that the two musicians I mentioned above, to me, are light years ahead of Ms. Bowers. No insult to her. But they are just absolutely stellar musicians who don’t get anything like the same kind of attention.
I could also say the same about a somewhat older white woman, that being Samantha Fish. she is also quite amazing.
So I don’t want to take anything away from this young woman who could probably blow me off the stage with her guitar playing. But it makes me crazy when the popular music Press makes her out to be like this absolute shining supernova bursting upon the scene when there are players who I think far Outplay her in terms of technique and, more importantly, in terms of feel and vocabulary (Gales, for example throws in stuff from classical music and also world music all the time and it’s amazing how he synthesizes them together ), all over the place.
So the next time you are flipping out over the next new talent, take a look at some of the people that the media generally ignore. For every article on Eric, or Kingfish, or Samantha, there are 100, maybe 1000 on Joe Bonamassa, A technically great player who has never surprised me, never opened a larger world for me, and whom I find to be incredibly predictable, even cliche in his playing, although technically quite amazing.
Look around! there are a lot of super amazing players you may have never heard of because of the color of their skin, or their looks, or their age.
If he were still alive, I would take one Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown over 100 of Ms. Bowers, or 100 of Joe Bonamassas…
