Also I always remember Louis Walsh (one of the judges on the show) saying that Rage Against the Machine were 'just a one-hit wonder'. Basically he had never heard of them, probably because his musical knowledge starts at Boyzone and ends at Westlife
Why blame Sony for selling music people want to hear, if you like Rage, they will sell you Rage. If you like catchy, overproduced, formulaic, soulless pop... that's what they're gonna sell you. Demand quality, demand originality, demand better, or settle for the lowest common denominator. They are a business, they don't care about music. Buy crap...get more crap, it's that simple.
Interesting how at first glance the campaign was against consumerism and reality tv shows, but at the end of the day both the x factor and RATM discography were owned by SONY, so the corporation eventually wins either way. Just shows you the impractical way of fighting the big corporations.
Problem is you have to pick somebody big and well known in order to stand any chance of doing something relevant in a campaign like this one. Also helps for what RATM music is and what they stand for.
Actually the argument was that people were tired of being spoonfed. Besides which this is a little like pointing out that protestors and police both benefit from living in a democracy. You can always point and say you see a parlor trick or sellout element, but it doesn't change the fact that we live in a society where you can bite the hand that feeds whether you mean it or not. That allows people to take the message seriously without acknowledging the delivery system. That could make disavowal permissible, or you could see it as poisoning the well. In one instance you treat the money as the thing that matters in the other you treat the message. If your art moves the Overton Window, your message may well be more important than money.
I remember listening to their performance on national radio at about 0855hrs in the morning. I also remember the presenters sounding nervous and apologising afterwards. Happy memories 😊
They donate a crazy amount every time they release anything or have any kind of reunion. this years concert tour was set to donate all proceeds from the first 3 concerts and 50% of the rest was set to go to local organizations wherever they were performing before coronavirus shut it down. That aspect doesn't get enough attention. They weighed the options and they can do more good for thier cause from the inside. The more money they make the more people benefit.

It was amazing they gave a free concert in London which I unfortunately missed. Never seen them live. Has anyone here seen them and what was your opinion of them live?
Morello had a quote about that (paraphrased): "If I could only tell you how many artists I know on indie labels bitching to me about late royalty payments or merch orders being delayed. There's nothing about independent labels that address problems that are already inherently present in capitalism."
We need a RATM reunion tour now more than ever. I saw them at Rock The Bells in 07 and they were phenomenal. I’d fly anywhere in the world to see them play again.
With all of my heart, I know we will experience a neo-Rage. I am an old-school punk, and Rage Against the Machine was the only clear voice I found in the 90’s. TRUTH NEVER DIES, so long as there is at least one to remember, and we are many. We remember.
it very broken my friend, the UK Christmas Charts is one of the most misleading Charts on the planet as the data is not reached anyway at or during Christmas, the real Christmas data from 27th December Weekly at Christmas, from 20th December Sales it was Joe McElderry knocked Rage Against The Machine, With The Climb. there were only top one week Rage up to 19th December sales data, the last battle won and simon must of been pleased in the End.

@@PunkShockRock police brutality doesn't exist? Even if you're blind enough to ignore it's existence in America, just look at Myanmar and Hong Kong right now.
So, I don’t think it makes sense to have the expectation that newer generations are going to “keep rock alive”. Imagine telling punk bands in the 80s that they didn’t have enough jazz influence, so therefore it’s trash? Every generation is going to take what previously existed and take away from it/add to it. That said, I think the solution to over processed music is a similar solution to most problems; education. Being able to understand that there are so many more chord progressions than i-v-vi-iv is the key to breaking out of the monotonous cacophony of mainstream radio. In other words, if you want better music, become a “musician” and not just somebody who pokes around on their instrument. Learn to understand why you like what you like to listen to and pass that information to others. Learn how to critically assess why something is “bad” or “good” to your ears.

If you're wondering why YT turned the volume down on your VO it's because the clip of Rage playing live was a lot louder than the rest of the audio in your video. The normalization filter doesn't lower the volume in just the loud part of the video but the entire audio track, so if only one part of your video is really really loud it'll make the rest of your video quiet in comparison. It's time consuming sometimes but the only way to avoid it is to either manually adjust the audio in your video before exporting or by adding some kind of compression to the audio track. Hope this helps, looking forward to watching more of your content!

Yeah, it was epic! I was so hyped by the news that the people had spoken and with such a perfect anthem. The pop machine suggests that pop is popular when in fact the people who don't like it need only join forces to prove that's there's more of us than there are of them. It gave me hope. 2 years too late, but here is my 2 cents. Simon Cowell is a scourge on the music scene. He puts out bubblegum music that is forgotten after 6 months, but gains massive profits during those 6 months. His label regurgitates the same bland, boring crap it always puts out, while exploiting the singers and musicians who could have had long and enjoyable careers. I can't even name any American Idol or X Factor winners. Rage Against the Machine will always have a following, regardless of their double reunion or hiatus or even if they are producing new music or not. It's memorable and has a message. Can anyone say the same thing about any of Cowell's musical acts?

I loved this so much! I was sick to the teeth with the X Factor by 2009, so I was more than happy to buy multiple copies of Killing in the Name. Also I always remember Louis Walsh (one of the judges on the show) saying that Rage Against the Machine were 'just a one-hit wonder'. Basically he had never heard of them, probably because his musical knowledge starts at Boyzone and ends at Westlife
I know RATM well.
Never heard of Louis Walsh.

Glad I do not know what westlife is. Sounds like a openly gay rap group.

I was 7 years old when Rage went to number 1, and it pretty much changed my entire perspective on what music was at that point.
Interesting how at first glance the campaign was against consumerism and reality tv shows, but at the end of the day both the x factor and RATM discography were owned by SONY, so the corporation eventually wins either way. Just shows you the impractical way of fighting the big corporations.
Can't deny that. But , i don't think RATM would've had the impact they went on to have without being on a major label.
Problem is you have to pick somebody big and well known in order to stand any chance of doing something relevant in a campaign like this one. Also helps for what RATM music is and what they stand for.
Yeah was gonna make the Sony comment.. Now in Lockdown.. We all suffer while corporations boast biggest profits... Rich richer.. Poor... Obliterated.
Gotta play the game to change the game
BBC 5live is a talk radio station covering news and sport. They never had bands play on the station, and when they did, this happened 😋

@@TheTurtleneck64 It was no joke.
Did mention RAGE performed a free concert a short time later in London's Finsberry Park 2009 and was a great show.
The lesson: never look to the charts for good music.
I love that song more and more with every year that passes! I'm in the U.S. and at 59 years old, you better believe I'm constantly saying "f- u, I won't do what you tell me"!
They wouldnt show the video, i remember top of the pops or whatever it was showing the countdown to xmas number 1 and they showed christmas lights flashing in time with a 30 sec clip of the song 😂😂😂
Even if I'm still young, I'm so glad I grew up listening to several bands in the alt rock, hard rock, prog rock, and alt metal genres. It has made up most of my life and helped me become who I am now. This is one of many bands that stays in my memories.
I remember this happening. What a time to be alive! I bought the single and so did a lot of my friends because we dog RATM and we wanted to see if it would happen. It was amazing they gave a free concert in London which I unfortunately missed. Never seen them live. Has anyone here seen them and what was your opinion of them live?
Truly awesome video ! Liked and subscribed because you DIDN'T ask or hustle anybody ! Cheers brother

There's no such thing as bad publicity...unless it's an obituary.
PewDiePie might disagree lol
Actually obituaries make for a really great publicity, but the problem is you're not there to enjoy it.
How are they supposed to spread their message without a major label?
Morello had a quote about that (paraphrased): "If I could only tell you how many artists I know on indie labels bitching to me about late royalty payments or merch orders being delayed. There's nothing about independent labels that address problems that are already inherently present in capitalism."
In the 90s? They couldn't.
De La Rocha equates this to getting the attention of the international press.

Agreed, but i do think Chuck and b do a good job in prophets of rage though.
I was at their first show in almost 11 years at Alpine Valley last July. It was fucking mind blowing.
By the end of this year, I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing a lot of Rage Against the Machine on the charts as well
With all of my heart, I know we will experience a neo-Rage. I am an old-school punk, and Rage Against the Machine was the only clear voice I found in the 90’s. TRUTH NEVER DIES, so long as there is at least one to remember, and we are many. We remember.
The music industry isn't broken, it was built this way.
it very broken my friend, the UK Christmas Charts is one of the most misleading Charts on the planet as the data is not reached anyway at or during Christmas, the real Christmas data from 27th December Weekly at Christmas, from 20th December Sales it was Joe McElderry knocked Rage Against The Machine, With The Climb. there were only top one week Rage up to 19th December sales data, the last battle won and simon must of been pleased in the End.
This was such a cool story!! I didn't know about this & THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL!!!✌️💙🤘

Either that, or it's controlled opposition. People don't realize how good the government is at controlling opposition, that's literally what bipartisan politics is, both 'sides' of the government are in it together, we're the ones who are truly divided, not so much the government. I'm sure they throw a few honest useful idiot politicians in there for authenticity, but a lot of them are pawns themselves to the ones who are actually in control.
If rock is to survive or become dominant again, it needs new blood. Most legacy acts aren't in a position to do this themselves (except maybe the Foo Fighters), but they can support new bands with opening slots on tours etc.
It's all about streaming content now. My kids are just hitting their teens and barely like anything on the radio.

Rage was the first concert I went to as a teenager in the 90's and it was a free concert by KROQ. It was held in a velodrome so it was one huge mosh pit with thousands of people circling in a drain like shape.
