The Netflix documentary “Cheer” gives viewers an inside look at the world of college cheerleaders by taking a look at the Navarro cheerleading squad. Even though it takes them hours to get their hair and makeup ready for an event don’t be fooled into thinking these aren’t intense athletes! There are some strict rules they all have to follow even when it’s not easy. They’re expected to maintain a constant online presence on social media but Gabi Butler finds it hard not to dwell on negative comments. Morgan Simianer says her squad does a lot of work to prevent injuries such as concussion checks, but weigh ins and revealing uniforms put them at a serious risk of eating disorders. Even paying for school can be hard since there are limited scholarships available. This pursuit can be an expensive one, but Lexi Brumback says she was lucky enough to get involved on the cheap. Coach Monica Aldama knows that friendship is an important component of the sport but so is being tough. La’Darius Marshall learned that having a positive attitude can be as essential as having the right movies.

@@ethanmerchant7952 I don't know about other groups, but no we necessarily didn't need to wear them. What we did needed was a super strict diet and a lot of flexibility to do the best of stunts. It's Also a bit risky, and I've ended up with twisted ankles too :)

these rules dont go for just collage cheerleaders it goes for everyone in the allstar cheer community! anywhere from 7 to even 20 year olds in allstar. most of us have never done gymnastics and we get private lessons from a coach at our gym. this is also an expesive sport like some people pay upwards of $12,000 a season. the allstar cheer world is a big community that no one really knows about

Where did the weigh ins rule come from? I did college cheer, never had a weigh in, in both colleges I had cheered for. Though I did have to run 5 miles a day to keep up stamina but weight was never a factor.

The girls that I used to throw toss stunts with in college averaged in the mid 130 range. I guess time have changed.
We had that too , but I was a majorette of a dance team‼️
I don't know why but it makes me sad that some girls or boys of my age don't have control over their bodies. They always have to look in a certain way.

They have to it's written in their rules. It's why I never tried out for UK in 2012. The weight limit for the women was barely 100 lbs. Otherwise they couldnt do the stunts that they do

Im a 15 year old and my dream is to get a full ride scholarship (I know its really hard/almost impossible) to college for cheerleading or academics. (I live in DE so i'm going to go after that $7,500 scholarship)I just really want some type of scholarship for college. Quarantine has really taken a toll on me and I wasn't allowed to do cheerleading at my school this year, it hurts, a lot. I muss cheer a lot and I now feel like I will not be able to make the varsity teem next year because i let myself go, i've become weaker and just unprepared for next year. (I know y'all don't care, like at all but) from this day forward I am going to work towards being ready and one of the best cheerleaders on my school teams next year.

I wanted to keep doing cheer, but since I have a birth defect that makes it extremely easy for me to get brain damage if I even crack my neck the wrong way, I can never be a flyer and at my height and the way my muscles tend to develop I wouldn't be an effective base either so I had to quit.

they make this sound so dramatic. these rules are the same for allstar cheer. we cheer because we love doing what we do. when we are injured, we don't want to sit out because we love doing what we do.

It was actually started by MEN in college to support the teams....in the beginning women were NOT ALLOWED....
And why is it necessary? It's a morale thing ....the way fans of football (soccer) around the world are....well that's the same thing cheerleaders do....they get the crowd pumped ....while the fans of football around the world are SUPER PUMPED already....in HS and College it may not be that great....so the CLs are there to get the crowd into it which helps the teams

Say what you will, but cheerleaders are badasses. I can't do what they do. Each and every one of them is a pro level athlete with some pretty amazing skills.
And what's up with that mandatory weigh in? The ONLY sports I know of that have mandatory weigh in's are things like boxing and MMA, and that's only because you have to fight in certain weight divisions. As long as a cheerleader can hold her own and still look good in the uniform, her actual numeric weight is totally irrelevant.
It matters if you are the one being tossed. This is why men are not flyers. They are too heavy. If you get too bulky as a woman you weigh heavier. That's why larger framed women are bases and not doing the stunts on top of the pyramids. I was 5'2 and 130 lbs in high school. I was too heavy to fly b/c I was mostly muscle. The other girls would have been injured if they tried to throw or catch me. I had to be a base.

Ok just to put it out there the whole “you have to look a certain way” thing they said is not true we have over weight girls on my team and it doesn’t matter because they just become bases. Only flyers have to look a certain way but they don’t make you change it they pick the smaller more fit girls for it. A lot of this sounds a lot worse than what it really is. And the cheerleaders choose to go do it so if they don’t want to they can quit, but they won’t because they love the sport.

What is the show cheer? Like why do you keep mentioning it? This was supposed to be about college cheerleaders...
The show "Cheer" is an original Netflix documentary series that follows the life of the Navarro College cheerleaders. The Talko keeps mentioning them because they are one of the best, if not, the best cheer team in America. Also, mentioning them is completely relevant because they are college cheerleaders.
Well cheer is based off Navarro College cheerleading which shows the backbone behind cheer, not traditional sidelines and Pom Pom's etc it really gives a good understanding of what u really have to put into cheer to make it so perfect and show stopping
