James I think you have hit the nail on the head in this video. I feel the professional photography industry is now over saturated and anyone with a camera now feels they are a pro as they capture there images and under cut those with the experience. It was so refreshing watching this as I have felt like that for a while. So many funermentals go into photography that now I prefer to capture what I enjoy rather than shooting towards a brief which takes away a lot of the creativity that I mainly enjoy for what it really is. Thank you for sharing dude. Much appreciated.

Appreciate the honesty. About a decade ago I was pondering whether to start doing photography professionally. I ended up keeping it as a hobby. I loved that chat with Emily about the lens. Reminds me of when my wife and I were looking for a bigger car as our Civic would be too small as we were expecting baby 2. I wanted an Accord Estate, she wanted an Smax, so we compromised and bought an Smax. She now takes great pleasure in telling me every time something breaks on it that it just “isn’t built as sturdy as a Honda is it..?”
Interesting what you say about landscape shots being hard to sell, I’ve tried selling some prints to friends/family via an insta page and Facebook page and was beginning to think I can’t be any good as no interest, just never thought about it being niche. Will see how calendars fair with people in the lead up to Christmas...

I used too love working on computer engineering, until I made it my profession. Now I have to get my photos right in camera because I hate computer engineering so much I won't edit my photos. All that to say, I would never become a professional photographer. Why? Because I love photography so much, and shooting for myself, and I don't want to ruin another hobby. Now, I only prep them for printing, print them, and then give then away.
Occasionally, someone will give me a few bucks, but the reward for me is the joy it gives them.

Yes it's where the money is, but when I'm camping or traveling, it's just me and the landscape and the viewer. I'd much rather be doing something that's my tharapy, and get paid little ..to getting many clients and making more money but at the pinicle of someone else. I have HUGE Respect for those types of Photographers because they can deal with people.

I'm the same. Dealing with people drives me spare. All the BS you have to dance around and dance to in order to get what both of you want. And, then, all the capriciousness of some clients. It's the same with portrait photography...too much hassle for not enough return, despite the fact it's supposed to be where the money is. Wedding, portraits, corporate, real estate, etc. The whole commercial side of it bores me to tears. I'd much rather be out on my own, doing my own thing and earning enough to keep me happy. Not having to worry about clients, contracts, deadlines and cancellations, etc, etc, etc.

@@07wrxtr1 I think you healthily recognized that you and wedding photography weren't made for each other, and moved on. I say this as a non-photographer but someone who's been married: weddings aren't about creativity for the photographer to outdo for him/herself their previous heaps of achievements with some new avant garde angle; they're about supplying to the couple a beautiful record of what they're experiencing for their first (and probably only) time.

Hey, James, I just want to say that I really enjoy your content! Throwing some love out there. Hope you're doing fine!
I can reeeeally find myself in this, as I am a professional illustrator and sometimes I need to just focus on something else (and I bought my first DSLR in 2019, a D7000 with an 18-200, to figure out what I like) because I feel I've been spending more time administering s**t and worrying over numbers than making authentic work that I love. Then I can have a clear mind and end up making art that I enjoy, without pressures, just for myself, and hoping that passion will shine through!

As an amateur photographer I find the best advice from photography TH-camrs is on aspects of photography I have overlooked (both technical and creative). The business side obviously is less important but I think there are some timeless principles about being a professional. Know the applicable copyright and contract law, understand what the client wants, know how to work with a client, etc. are aspects that were true in the dinosaur (film) days as they are now. General advice from someone who has been there is valuable even if some of the details are out of date (say details of contract law).
From what I have seen with photography is many genres like landscape were a more difficult sale because the potential customers were hideously hard to reach in the old days. This meant a lot of great landscape photographers had to have a day job of some type to pay the bills and they could not spend as much time as they would like on their interests. With the Internet and TH-cam it is easier to find active photographers in these genres who are doing great work and whose work is worthy of purchasing. But before no one would have heard of them.

In the late 1990's I decided it was time to take my photography to the next level. I purchased some medium format equipment and rented some retail space for a studio, where I spent my evenings and weekends, because I still had a day job.
After about a year and a half I realized that my hours of operation were limiting me. So I quit my day job and moved into a larger studio. After another year or so I realized that something was missing. It was the fun. When I started to use photography to pay the bills I often had to shoot things that I didn't like. I ended up sacrificing some quality when working for clients that were more driven by quantity. It's not a good feeling when you know that what you're producing isn't your best. And I really suck at pitching, as you call it. My passion lies in creating the image, not marketing it.
So as far as the IRS and the State Comptroller's Office are concerned, I am retired from the photography business. That was fifteen years ago. Now I'm having fun and occasionally working for tips.

Im with you on hating editing - as a pro stills photographer, like you I listen to Pop Master, music or have youtube or MotorTrend in the background but video is quiet and a bit lonely.
I would disagree about worrying about the numbers though. As a smaller channel the numbers are very important as a small fluctuation makes a big difference to the money coming in!
Bang on about the 1 guy in the room though...

What you said about video editing is spot on. I run my own small production company and editing video is absolutely my least favorite thing to do. I would much rather be out shooting video and getting creative than sitting in front of a computer for hours on end. Editing photos is so much more fun for the exact reasons you mentioned. Love the video. Thank you!

I love shoting video and of course pics, but i agree, editing video takes ages and hitting the right pace, is really difficult.

    • @KevinNordstrom
      @KevinNordstrom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It really is time consuming. An hour recording , turns into a 3 hour edit, which turns into a 10 minute video.
If I'm honest, I'd much rather just be shooting photos, but finding a balance of quality video is important. Some days I just feel like shooting on the go and just winging my videos without much or any edits.

Love your channel. It’s one a small number of photography channels that I watch from start to finish. I think sometimes we get to caught up in the pixel peeping, gear reviews... etc. I like your channel because it’s photography lite, and we do learn along the way. Refreshing in these times. 👍

Hi James, congratulations to Emily & yourself on the wedding! Why do I watch your channel? Because of your unique way of presenting and enjoing what you do, landscape photography, that is (too much advice out there on the Interweb of TH-cam). By the way, I'm lucky enough to go to my favourite spot next weekend! And tbe weather is right, rain in WA is gold. Literally and figuratively. So, hopefully some nice frames coming up.

    Very interesting video James.
Thanks for being so honest and telling us the + and - of both worlds, i. e. professional photography vs YouTubing. In fact, everybody has to make a living and choosing the path that fits you best is the way to go. I just hope you still find the time to explore your photographic visions because that problem seems to be happening more and more among TH-camrs. Some followers criticize the fact that many TH-camrs who create photographic podcast aren't professional photographers. In today's world, I think we nee to modify the definition of a "professional photographer". People forget that the mentors that teach them the Art of Photography in school, or at other places for that reason, may not practice as professional. But the thing is, when put into context, is that like many educators, they chose to put their talent in developing the future talents. For me, that's what I call "professionalism".
    Nice work James!

The principles of Photography never really change only fads and some trends. You have an entire body of experience to draw from. That's experience a lot of newcomers don't have and it's definitely a valuable thing.
The latest nerdy trendy tools can only take you so far. It's the one in the driver's seat and his or her know how that makes good photographs and good professional photography. A truly good photographer can use anything when he puts his head around how to use it. So definitely, I believe you should continue to give advice. I would rather learn from a professional who knows a thing or two about those solid principles. I've learned a lot from your videos
I did black and white newspaper photography when I was in high school, but it took a while to move out of that kind of picture taking and into the more Artful forms of photography. People like you have helped me along the way.

I can't remember where I saw it or read it, but someone said "The best way to make money in photography, is to sell things to photographers". And I think TH-cam videos definitely count. I absorb a ton of content from this channel and others like it and would generally happily pay for it. But outside of wedding photography, I don't see a TON of money in just photos.

This one made me chuckle: the very moment Emily asked for the price, TH-cam decided to pause and buffer - perfect timing - I had to re watch just to check that wasn’t something you’d edited in! Interesting discussion (and lens cleaning) too 👍

You have also described why I don't make TH-cam videos (nothing to do with lack of talent, motivation or creativity, thank you very much!). I just like taking photographs, and my target audience of one (i.e., me) is exceedingly pleased with the results.

As I got a new(ish) camera body last year, I simply passed the previous one to my wife. Threw in an “all-in-one” wide range zoom I had laying around, and set the whole thing to “auto” green mode. Now she’s taking more pictures than me, and just started using back button focus... 😅

This is such an interesting video, thank you for making it it really got me thinking about how I work, and essentially I guess how lucky I am in my role as a creative and photographer. So what I do is I guess very ‘niche’ I shoot houses I have done for over ten years and right now I shoot houses from £2m up 3-5 days a week and have to retouch in the evening with (2 small kids which lead to some serious burn out issues). I’ve been battling wishing I had time to spend developing my profession. It’s just me (and sometimes an assistant). I always thought people had to know who I was and I had to have a following to be successful but hearing the struggle of other photographers outside of my bubble network of other guys and gals doing what I do I realise how lucky I am. I just go out and shoot, retouch, shoot more, retouch and call bookings to
Book in. I’m normally only booked about 3 weeks in advance so it’s odd...and some find it unnerving, but after a few years you get used to it. I work for myself my clients just tell me ‘just do your thing Mark’ again I feel lucky but sometimes deep guilt when I’m facing serious burn out. Once again thanks for making this video, it might be very different to what you were expecting but I hope it’s positive, that there are other exciting experiences and ways of working within our profession. If you’d like to connect I’m @markhardycreative on the ol’ Instagram :) I’ve also just subbed as you’ve just come up as a suggestion and your message and content is great :)

Just getting into photography and glad i found you. My kind of humor and down to earth. I have a question though. I think the G9 is a gorgeous camera, but i have to ask why four thirds? I picked the 80D for my first camera mainly because of price, but also because it is well rounded with video and stills and also it leaves room to grow. But i find myself wondering if i should of just spent roughly $500 more and got an entry level FF. Just curious why you chose four thirds.

I super agree with despising video editing. It's a large reason why I stopped making videos shortly after starting (not this account). A bit of self-love is needed to be able to wade through listening to myself for hours. Then, as you've said, it can interfere with taking photos.
