Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - one of the least visited national parks deserves the designation of “less is more” - less people, cars, roads and buildings. Which makes it the perfect motorcycle destination. We explore the North Rim, South Rim, East Portal Road with a 16% grade on what appears to be melting pavement and finally a thrilling ride on 92 (West Elk Loop Scenic Byway) - designated the Colorado Dragon. What’s not to love about this amazing part of Colorado?

Camped at the national park there one night heard a bump under the camper .As I eased out and looked under the camper was staring a mountain lion in the face we both went our separate ways instantly. What a beautiful place. Thanks for the memories

I think what impresses me the most is the time you spend on gravel and dirt. My wife and I take the back roads and run gravel a lot but nobody will ride with us as they turn around as soon as they see anything other tan tar. You guy have it right, get out there and see what everyone else is missing. Plus you guys are very skilled.

Right around minute 19 I became impressed with your riding skills when Rich mentions a warning about the gravel but more importantly nonchalantly raises the potential for a speeding car from around the blind curve. That’s thinking ahead. Not just seeing, but seeing the potential. Stay safe, and thanks for sharing your travels.

Glad u guys went to the south side of The Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park. That is is better side with the views and paved roads. The land that the East Portal Rd is on was sold to the federal government by my wife’s family to build the Crystal Point Dam. And their ranch bordered much of the park on the south side. Very beautiful area. Thanks for going there.

I had a small dog dish in my kit for the longest time. It was just the right size for cereal. Beautiful area. I'm not sure I know how to deal with dispersed camping sites either but plan on trying more of them during my next long trip into the US (which looks like 2022). We don't have much in the way of dispersed camping equivalents in Canada.

Good job guys. Glad you found and used the Portal Tunnel road, but you didn’t show the hairiest parts...as in the blind corner with the convex mirror to see around the bend. That part of Colorado is great riding. If you are still in the area, be sure to ride the Colo Natl Monument, outside Fruita, just west of Grand Junction. A short ride but I think it is majestically beautiful. You are making me long to return for another ride out there. Florida is sooo flat.

I’m blessed enough to live in Gunnison County and ride this a lot. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is our favorite place here. I have a 2016 Harley Street Bob that’s low and corners very well, and I have a 1995 BMW R1100 GS I ride off-road. I love riding my BMW on the Kebler Pass road. Not recommended for Harley baggers. Nice RT. That would be my choice of the two. Great photography here. You’ve made much better pics of the Canyon than I have. I want to camp at the campground where you did. I’m looking for more videos of yours now. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 If I might add - I have a modern off the grid home for sale near Marble, Colorado. It’s under contract now,. But if the deal falls through (again) it will he for sale.

God bless you guys for riding on dirt/gravel roads. We always steer away from them. I noticed you wear leathers. Ever tried First Gear Heated Gear. After a couple of years on the road and putting rain gear over heavy leathers, we switched. Light weight and toasty warm.

@@TwoWheelsBigLife First Gear stuff are liners that go under your coat, pants and shoes. Pretty light weight. They all plug together and use a wireless on/off switch and heat control. A simple accessory plug (like for trickle charger) gives it power. I have gloves as well but don’t need them due to heated grips. Although, you still have to unplug the top from the bottoms to pull your pants down!

My wife, and I found the same problem last year In Colorado, and Utah. Every place in the National Parks we wanted to stay were full, except for Natural Bridges. We got the last open campsite. Weather was really iffy during our trip, so making reservations didn't really work for us. We ended up staying in private campgrounds, and RV. parks that had tent camping. Cost us more, but they did have nicer facilities. Laundry rooms, showers, very clean restrooms. They were also quieter. I have always been a little fearful of boondocking. Think we will have to get over that. I also fear getting our bike, and trailer stuck on some dirt road so we have pretty much stayed on paved roads. I know from years past that weekends were the worst. Often I would pull in on a Thursday, and stay thru to Sunday morning so that I would be assured a place to stay. A few times I could not find a place to stay, and ended up riding hours longer into the night before finding a spot. Other times we gave up, and had to stay in a motel. Motorcycle Traveling is fun, but it is not with out its' challenges at times. Guess that is all part of the adventure. Look forward to seeing your next video.

Hey guys, your road bikes will be fine on gravel/dirt roads, don't be too concerned about going off-road to turn around, unless it is wet of course! Practice some friction zone u-turns and become proficient at those, you will need less room to turn around than those walking u-turns. Do some u-turn practicing on the hard top them get onto the dirt and practice. You should still be able to use the friction zone to u-turn with that trailer, the motorcycle clutch is designed for friction zone use (or riding the clutch), dont forget to use the rear brake when in the friction zone.
The Scenic Motorcycle Navigation app is good for navigating, it has an offline option for when you are out of reception for GPS, you can load your route from various other apps like google maps and run it through the app.
Chicken strips are safety strips. ;-)

Two resources I use a lot. One for camping, and one for Navigation. maps.me App One can download all maps and use offline. We were in some pretty out of the way areas on our trip last month, and maps.me saved us many a time. I also recommend freecampsites.net A most valuable resource for finding free, and affordable campgrounds. Most reviewers mention the road conditions. Also, look into the small town fairgrounds. Many have RV/Camping spots with electric/water and restrooms. Our favorite campgrounds on our last trip were Upper Teton View (free) Shoup Bridge Campground, ID ($5) Banbury Hot Springs, ID ($10) The camp host at Shoup is a bike rider and has two Goldwings.

So what kind of bike to bike communications do you use? My wife and I bought some gear that, despite the reviews, were useless much above 50mph. We reverted back to hand signals during our 4500 mile trip out to the Four Corners and back.
Next question is, finances. Do you guys have a large bank account or substantial investments?
Or are you surviving off of social security?
How much do you spend each month while traveling by bike, living on the road, staying in campgrounds?
Lastly, is this just a long vacation, after which you'll get a new home and new jobs?
Or, is this now your permanent lifestyle?
    I'm envious btw.

Boondocking is great, if you don't mind primative camping where you dig your own latrine, have to pack in your own water, and pack all of your trash out. You can ride any bike off-pavement - but you have to keep your body over the bike instead of leaning in. The bike still needs to roll into the turns, but you have to shift your body weight to keep your mass centered above the contact patch of the tires. Needless to say, this is far easier to do on an adventure bike or a dual-sport bike. But I've encountered guys who could out ride me on fire roads when they're on a Hayabusa. It's about learning the skills. The gravel roads I've seen you ride on are similar to what you'd find in state or national forests and BLM land, so I don't think you'd have any problem with it, really.

You guys are making me crazy. It’s called Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. They are also called Chicken STRIPS.
There is lots of dispersed camping in CO. My advice is find a place on Friday night and stay through Sunday morning. Covid might be making it worse, but weekends in August are going to be tough. You might try heading north central Colorado as that is less popular (not really for any reason it’s great up there) or out to the Eastern Plains (Comanche National Grasslands and Bents Fort) thats where I head when the mountains are full.

    • @TwoWheelsBigLife

We been traveling on Sundays and Wednesday’s. This summer it’s hard to locate spots.

    • @bstapleton3248
      @bstapleton3248 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s like that every August. There are first come first served sports which you can usually get but you gotta get there early. Don’t be afraid to disperse camp. Might also try up in the Frying Pan by Basalt. Hip Camp seems a decent alternative though. Everything will probably open up after Labor Day unless Covid shuts down the whole country. You can also disperse camp on BLM Bureau of Land Management land. In Wyoming, up in Medicine Bow National Forest just north of the Colorado Border you can disperse camp and almost nobody goes there. It is spectacular. Look on the road going north out of Walden.
