@@DarkMayhem666 nah it’s not. Barry has always had a crush on Iris. Joe took him in so he wouldn’t go into the system. Barry and Iris never had a sibling relationship. They were best friends when they were kids. Dexter and Deb were not. Dexter and Deb grew up together as siblings. That’s the difference. Barry and Iris never called each other brother and sister. The only people who hate the idea of this version of Barry and Iris is because Iris is black and they need to find any way to discredit their relationship.
In all honesty the ending did make sense. Really sad not to see Dexter go to Argentina, but he does follow a realistic antihero/tragic hero plot. The main plot change that could have improved the ending would be if Deb had actually just died and not in that weird way, but show is still one of my favorites.
You have done us such a public service! I am so happy I found this! I really didn't want to watch all 8 seasons, again, before watching the new series, Dexter: New Blood, but knew I'd want to refresh my monkey mind about the finer points. You did an amazing job! And your sense of humor was an added bonus! :)
I rewatched the series after finishing New Blood and I honestly feel like the first 2 seasons were the most solid as far as the plots go. Season 4 with the trinity killer had so much potential early on but Dexter’s bad decisions halfway through basically ruined his entire life 😂
I always thought Dexter should have ended with him being in a big game of cat & mouse with Miami Metro, ultimately getting caught (rather than killing laguerta), with him getting the death sentence - a bit like how he witnessed the electric chair with Harry when he was younger. Only this time he’s the one in the chair, and Debra is one of 5 people to press the switch to administer the lethal dose. She doesn’t know if hers is the switch that contains the dose, but with camera work we’re led to believe it was indeed her switch that killed him.
This has reminded me how much I loved the first 4 seasons of this show. I can’t wait for the upcoming return of Dexter. I really hope the new season gives me a better sense of closure than what they came up with originally.
@J N Iirc, his Awakening sparked before Lilah, but his time with her brought it to an unmistakable bon fire. Rita started feeling frisky first and Dexter thought their relationship might be screwed since he wasn't feeling yet.
I have to disagree. I binged watched the show this year and clearly noticed "the change" as the seasons progressed. So that could be a factor as I didnt have a break in between to forget past plots. Id say: 1-4: is the best 5 - 6: ok 7: took a break from watching at the middle (when he met hanna) Then continued on. 8: I could tolerate the first couple of episodes & then I slowly got angry. I still finished it because I wanted to watch the revival series. I think I watched a recap of some of season 7 & 8 episodes because I couldnt bear watching dexter slowly dig his grave by making multiple stupid decisions.
@@k.a._135 I mean, he was essentially undergoing therapy. With volatile people, therapy is very dangerous, which is why a good counselor will employ methods to minimize risk to themselves. His own mistakes were more like dominoes, the volatiles reactions of an unstabled and damaged mind trying to heal. @@Sohbek but he only had a therapist for one season (where he was so stressed & tense he couldnt sleep with Rita. Then learn to let it go). How could that extend to the rest of the series where he was essentially making rash decisions by himself (without a therapist following up on him). What personally annoyed me is that he *repeated the same mistakes* over and over again *without learning from it* until it ruined him. I can understand him longing to have someone understand him & repeatedly getting hurt as a result, but how many times does he have to get hurt to understand that he shouldn't underestimate his enemy / people he tries to kill ? Specially after they know who you are/ where you live. Wasnt trinity enough for him to learn to never to delay a kill regardless ? *Thats what irritated me the most in the final half season 8 because he actually did that.* We could say his increased mistakes & disregard to the past were due to him healing and becomming more human + *optimistic* (he didnt even want to kill anymore at the end of season 8 & was hopeful for a better life), but it still managed to annoy me how unaware he was of this. It was painful to watch someone lose everything because of the *same horrible mistake.* it was hard to watch.
Wow, thanks for the great recap! I'm watching it for the first time and haven't gotten over Rita's death. I'm still disturbed, and thanks to you, I now have the certainty that I won't continue watching it but will finish Dexter. I'll just imagine that he never got caught, continues to kill bad guys, and leads a happy life with Rita and the family.
My side story that led me to appreciate Dexter: I spent from 11 years old to 40 years old in what many people consider to be a religious cult. It was a very restrictive life, so much so, that, often, in order to have a normal existence, a lot of people chose to live what the religion called a 'double-life'. That is, putting on a public persona of being an obedient member, faithful, dedicated, and a person who followed the endless rules that were there to prevent us from being so-called 'sinners', while secretly doing things that were forbidden by the religion, hoping not to get caught; most of our recreational options were dictated by the religion, as well as most of our time outside of necessary obligations like work. I lived that 'double-life' too, trying to be a good member of the religion, while having skeletons in my closet; discovery of those skeletons could lead to expulsion and the loss of your entire network which could include family. I have family that haven't spoken to me in 9 years; people I considered friends for decades will never speak to me unless I return to the cult. Anyway, one day a thought occurred to me that turned it all upside down. I didn't want to pretend anymore, nor did I want people heavily dictating my life at every angle. I walked away and lost everything. In the first year or so, all I did was go to work, return home, and watch TV, I had no clue how to make friends outside of the religion since we were taught people outside of it were 'bad' (it took a long time to start working at it). Shows like Dexter were my saving grace during that very lonely period. Dexter was especially cathartic, because I really identified with him having to hide who he was while trying to conduct his 'legal' affairs; every time he almost got caught was a moment of complete identification for me with Dexter; because I knew what that felt like. Totally different 'crimes' but probably the similar feelings of " oh sh*t , I'm caught my life is over ". What a great show. Will always have a special place in my heart for Dexter.

Dexter is a masterclass in exploring the duality of human nature, brilliantly showcasing how a seemingly 'normal' guy can harbor such darkness. The complexity of Dexter's character-his struggle between his dark passenger and his desire for connection-makes him both relatable and horrifying. The show dives deep into moral ambiguity, challenging viewers to question what justice really means. The tragic ending, where Dexter chooses solitude over love, is a poignant reminder of the consequences of his choices. It’s a haunting reflection on how our past can shape our future, leaving us to wonder if true redemption is ever possible.
Rita's death was hands down one of the best well played out story lines ever. NO ONE saw it coming.

Re watching this series in anticipation and man. I never saw it before but debrah has the most tragic character ever. Sad for the character but great for the actress. Amazing writing
The best recap on Dexter I've seen on TH-cam.

When Lewis mails the ice truck killer’s hand , the barcode on the box is a real one. I worked for USPS and scanned it. Good job production team.
12:00 had me in tears 😭😂
thanks for the recapp as ive always been curious of the series but no time in my life now to watch something that long.
I wanted to recommend dexter recap so many times, especially when the new season was announced but I kinda had the feeling you were gonna do it anyway.
Thank you, this was godsent! Been watching you for years and you've saved me so much time with a lot of shows 💪
Dexter is a masterclass in exploring the duality of human nature, brilliantly showcasing how a seemingly 'normal' guy can harbor such darkness.
I'm a bit concerned, I talk to my coworkers about the Man of Recaps as if he was a lifelong buddy.
I might need help.
I just want to thank you for the multitude of hours you must have spent going through all of the footage to recap this. Great job!!
