- Testing how much weight a FlexiSpot E8 standing desk can lift. Surprisingly much, it turns out, and I used it as a gantry crane too! Not a recommended use of standing desk frames.

I just got not this brand but a cheap one on sale in the UK a few months ago. Its surprisingly solid, more solid than any none lifting desk I've ever had. Couldn't be happier and one really great use is raising it all the way to the top so you can casually just roll your chair under it to work on cables and what have you at the back of the desk or on the floor. I absolutely love that, no more crawling around on hands and knees!
Having seen other TH-camrs I subscribed having uploaded videos with this company I was thinking, oh yeah another one. But of course Matthias made it in a way it was really fun to watch 😍and not just another build your own desk type of thing🤣

You can put it on casters or rail and do a portable band saw. to do some boards. The legs will give you height adjustment for each pass.

I am using a standing desk for 4 years now (a flexispot EF1 I think ) and I like it. I do have 2 desks in my office though, so in reality the standing desk is always in the high position and for sitting down I just go to the other desk.. so a fixed high desk would have been enough.. but those aren't even much cheaper so it wouldn't be worth it.
I am using 3 of the hand crank style in my shop as in-feed and out feed tables with rollers and I like it 😊
It sounds like this company should also make gantry hoists and stuff because GAHDAYUM! That thing lifts!
next time, ask them to send you the big boy wood top! They sent me the solid wood oak top and WOW is it a unit! Also, I prefer the E7 for its screw mounting. Everything is surfaced so you don't run the risk of accidentally dropping a screw into the leg during install and having to unscrew all the bolts to get to one that fell into the leg cavity. As usual, great video Matthias.
I used one of those a few weeks ago at work for a desk that was only 36" wide. I remove.the adjustable bars from the rails and cut about 14" out of the center. I mig welded it back together. Worked out great
I think some of the cheaper models can go that narrow without modifications

I've always wanted a standing motorized desk! As a 6'4" person, It seems like it would be so nice for doing projects on. Like soldering without hunching over! Buuut for $740usd I don't think I'll ever get a Flexispot E8...
Buy once cry once. If you want to buy a cheaper one maybe you will find one that’s equal in quality, but who knows. Any brand that deals with Matias clearly is confident in the quality of their product.
On the Canadian website it has the E8 for $699 CAD which is $500 USD.
If I was in the market I’d definitely consider one. Because I’m not rich I’d rather buy a quality product once that I can rely on for a long time rather than spending more money over time replacing something. Especially if it’s a tool I will have to use and interface with everyday.
Also they sell way cheaper ones…
@@DMSparky Take the plunge, plan to keep it for at least 10 years, then the price is not that expensive at all. I'm so very glad I did this a long time ago, even though it was expensive. Way less back pain, changeover to whatever you suddenly like, and more. The concept of motorized desks is just way too good if you use it.

Was going to do the white glass variant, but I have a clamp-on monitor arm. It would be nice if, in the future, they left a small 8x5" area on far left corner of table that does not have glass - allowing a spot for clamp on monitor arm. I have a custom glass shop in town (Barber Glass, Guelph), so I might trace the tabletop and get them to make up something custom for an extra ~$100.
I have never been too concerned about the max weight those standing desks can lift, but more about the wobble factor that they have, especially when in high positions, as I tend to type hard on keyboards. I also like to have monitors mounted on arms making them more susceptible to movements. Standing desks are lacking a stability standard. Fun and interesting video.
surprisingly stable though. But yes, a regular desk will be more stable.
I put a 2x1m top on the smallest flexispot they sold 4 years ago. I use it as a computer desk with a 50" TV as a monitor. It is as stable as my 2 normal office desks (can't have too much desk space...) - almost all the wobble comes from the tabletop itself and the carpet it is standing on...
I've got a giant desk on mine, it's 2400mm x 900mm , there's ~100Kg of gear on it, it doesn't wobble at all.
I wonder if it would be possible to hook up two desks to a single remote. I'd like to make an L shaped desk with two of these frames as they look a lot sturdier than the 3-legged standard L shaped desks. So basically still use a controller with each desk, but split the wire(s) from the remote to both controllers.

That desk seems to be nicely over-engineered. I've wondered if they were reliable if you raised and lowered them a few times every day; it seems like they are (at least from this manufacturer).

6m50s heh, small funny side-note: I live in Sweden and I recognize that precise rope from the local ClasOhlson store (though not in red). And yes, it's a bit crappy, any decent paracord will outperform it many times in strength. Though sometimes you want a thicker rope even if it's weaker. I've only used it for stuff like macrame-braiding handles on waterbottles or small loops on my backpack.
Using a "resi-mertial" or home desk under maximum load is just going to burn out the motors or strip the gears prematurely. Commercial desks are rated at the same weight, but it is not recommended to lift that much on a regular basis. More expensive but they have 10+ year warranties on the motors.

If I wanted to fit my own desktop, how easy would that be? I tried asking Flexispot UK and they didn't seem to want to answer the question. I guess they want to sell desktops...
as long as its flat on the bottom, and at least as big as the smallest desk top they sell with it, it's just a matter of drilling holes in the bottom of the desktop and screwing through the frame into your desktop.
Wonder if it's stable enough for 1.2m fish tank. Great to be able to lower tank for servicing 😊
is the fish tank more than 150 liters? (most certainly it would be). At that point, you are over the rated load.

I could imagine these desks can be raised as high because some users may walk on a treadmill while working at the desk, adding another 20-30cm to their body height.

Ohhh, I recognise that "rope" you used here.
It's not made for doing a real rope's work. It's for fooling the consumers into believing that it's the real thing.
The inside is just a foam used for filling it to look like a genuine, thick, massive rope, for example used for climbing or sailing.
I hope nobody ever thinks it can be used for something that someone's life depends on.

Edit: Tried to clarify after Matthias' feedback.
Its looped around both times, so rope 8x holding 160 kilograms. The rope only has to hold 20 kilograms to lift the saw. Do learn to think and do some math, please. Also, maybe watch the video?

The rope I'm talking about is the one you used to test the lifting power by pulling on the 2x4.
I commented because I recognised a "rope" I bought at the local supermarket.
I was going to use it for drying clothes. Only the "rope" suddenly became 30-40 cm longer after adding a few jeans to it. And then I saw exactly what you showed in the video, where the inside crumbled. I saw it was only filled with some soft foamy stuff, so when exerting force on it, the outer layer pushes inwards and thereby crushes it. That is the sounds you heard when tightening it, and that's why the rope suddenly gets very thin.
Proper rope stretches, too, but not this much, and it doesn't crack like this fake one does... at least not before it breaks totally. And the core of a real rope of the same diameter will be so strong that you will definitely not be able to pull it in pieces with your hands, like you showed here.
Believe me, I didn't want to be disrespectful or anything. I have the outmost respect and awe for what you do and the level of detail you have in your work. English is not my first language, so I hope that what I said was understood the way it was intended.
To sum it up, I just wanted to say that a real rope doesn't behave like that, and I wanted to warn others from bying it and use it for anything more critical than hanging up your clothes... and not even that.
When a manufacturer stays away from Matthias testing, they don't have much trust in their products, in contrast Flexispot trusts their products.

This sure looks like a commercial... but a very interesting one. I was surprised you didn't break that board that was under the desk when it broke the rope. I did an approximate bending stress calculation on that 2x4 and the calculated stress was extremely high. You had a good piece of wood there, well over 5000 psi bending stress.
I wasn't sure what would break. I knew the rope wasn't very strong, but spread over four pieces, I figured it might break the 2x4. If it broke the 2x4, that would have been cool too.

If you add encoders, you could make a CNC standing desk. This opens a world of possibilities!
I have thought about using legs to drive a CNC, but they really aren't for continuous operation!
I don't remember who (not one of my subs) but someone made a desk that rises with you. If you tap your foot on the leg of the table, it activates and stops at the height where your open palm is. More of a coding project, i think and tinkering than actual world application, but still cool.
I have no idea who this experiment is supposed to be important for. After all, a desk is not a crane.

I'd rather the legs can't just slip out sideways, but I showed retracting the legs once I had the saw on a dolly to move it all together

I really like mine, although it has one flaw IMHO -- the desktop edge is not radiused so it is less comfy than it could be.
funny that, I just added an extra board to make it a bit wider, and I radiused the edge. But the bamboo is probably already better that way than some white melamine coated stuff. They can't round the edges on that cause it would just cut thru the melamine
Easily remedied. Tho if it were me, i'd cut the edge with a slot and glue some oak and chamfer that.
3:16 huh. Yours is lighter than mine (built from your sketchies). Tho i did use a bit of oak i had on hand to make the inner core. Neat.
The way i see it, the weakest spot on that table are the flat portion of the feet, and they know it. There's several stiffening elements added. I still remember those 90's early 00's office tables that you'd see everywhere and the manufacturers never cared about it, despite the fact that they keypt breaking in the same spot. Neat to see a product that's actually decently built.
I have put together a few flexispot desks, and even on the cheapest ones, those horizontal parts of the legs are solid. Though I never tried lifting a table saw with the cheaper models.
@@matthiaswandel Yeah, i saw. I meant in the sense that they're aware of how that area usually breaks and they mitigated all the issues by making it a tube (of sorts). Cheaper tables, cheaper models of this type of table (stand up) they don't have a tube there. Whomever is the engineer at FS, they know their stuff.

7:44 yeah it kinda looks like your trying to break it😂 although I don’t own one I do like these desks, making gaming/editing/computer or desk work have the ability to sit down or stand up which makes for better circulation and the ‘free order’ thing is so cool, I’ve never seen any company do that anywhere
now put your bandsaw sideways on the legs and angle irons for tracking to make it travel .... now its ready for milling x)
precisely rasing and lowering the mill head has been a problem with my sawmill experiments. But I don't think I'd want to dedicate a standing desk frame to that.
