Minimalistic photography is fun, especially when you know what to look for. In this video I share a bunch of examples in both an urban environment and out in nature. We went on an epic trip to Namibia earlier this year, and I shot some fine examples of minimalism while in Sossusvlei and Deadvlei that im an quite proud of.

The best way to learn this is to go out yourself. And I hope this video inspired you to do just that. It is so much fun when you learn to look for minimalism. Another way to improve faster.

Go ahead and brag about your photography, that’s why we are here! I really love the dune photos. Deadvlei and Sossusvlei seem like such an unreal place to visit and photograph. I love the minimalist approach, it really forces you to look at things in a totally different or abstract (like you said) way. It’s a great way to change things out and create a specific perspective. Referring to 2:52, there's a school of thought that light itself - ignoring the obvious that all photographs are nothing but light - or a gradient can be subjects. This water picture is a good example of that. I think the subject is best described as texture. The strong contrast accentuates the subject by showing how it behaves in different intensities of sunlight. Thus providing more meaning about the subject. But.. that's just my interpretation. "Ooh, pretty water" is just as valuable as a dissection.
Id call that a very good reflection! Thanks for the input. As for black and white photos, yeah, its easy to just slide the saturation to the left when you dont nail the colours. But I think the best black and white photos alwasy come from a counciuos decision of making them b&w from the start. Not by accident. I had a few accidental B&W photos from the session I quite liked better than the colours, but it was my intention to have them in colour. Those photos looking good (i liked them at least) was coincidence. Anyways, cheers for watching. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Andreas, and great question! I think it makes sense to use black and white in high contrast/harsh light, like that day on the opera house. Dont really do that much black and white. But on that note, my favorite lion portrait from Africa is in black and white. Little plug for my solo travel in Africa series, and in stark contrast to street photography :) Have a great weekend! When getting the colors right is too much of a pain in the ass. When in doubt, that saturation sliding is going to the left lmao

I am also planning a trip to Namibia. How accessible were these deserts from the city? Did you have to pay an arm and a leg to get there?
theyre all quite accessible, and normal park fees apply. I cant remember exactly how much, but I reckon it was about 30 USD or something. Google sossusvlei and youll find a ton of info. Cheers

Love your pictures! I think we should stop calling them rules. Rules are usually enforced by a ISO organization of sorts. In this case is more guidelines and suggestions to create emotion. It’s very subjective and cannot be controlled. Just my opinion.

I really didn't see the instructional aspect of this video, I have only seen an exhibit of his collection, nothing else.
Been a while since I made this - ill make a note of it and maybe do another one more instructional. Maybe you found some inspiration in the images shown? And what would you have liked me to talk about, that would be interesting to know to make these videos better. Have a good one
