If you can lay your hands on it ever thought of adding Kaolin Clay? Also some rock minerals and adds greatly to water retention here in Perths dreadful sandy depleted soils
this is why David Johnson suggests fertigatiton with two pounds Johnson-Su compost blended into 20 gallons of water then applied ... Christine Jones say's worm casting extract will break a hydrophobic soil surface. Even Nicole Masters says an ounce of milk in a gallon of water will break the surface tension given the calcium and lactic acid bacteria ... My experience indicates that a bit of liquid humates in the water will stop that hydrophobic condition after an extremely dry period.

Our problem is tree roots! It is interesting what you said about the glysophates - we moved to the island in the hope of getting away from the poisons but sadly the farms around the island and the shire uses them and results in me becoming very ill.
