    I honestly have not liked the sound of any pure direct mode in any receiver I've ever tried so glad to hear I'm not missing anything.

    Excellent work.Many forums say that Neural x gives best sound so I try to choose it as my surround processor no matter what content Im playing and it seems to provide a more robust sound. With Netflix, no matter what the content is presented Neural x never allows my 4 presence speakers to work with my yamaha 2080. An odd situation I have not been able to figure out.

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also find that dts:x or neural:x playback sometimes doesn't give me the presence (height) speakers as expected. This came true when the source material was native dts, but didn't have heights encoded. It was giving a straight interpretation instead of upmixing. I believe there are other conditions where this happens. I find that Neural:X tend to place more content in the height channel then Dolby or Auro-3D upmixers. -Jon

    Hi John,
    Objectively, what AVR would you choose between an Onkyo RZ 50 and Yamaha A6A assuming they were roughly the same cost? I’m running a 5.2.4 setup. Your videos are absolutely the best! Thanks!

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would rate the Yamaha A6A slightly higher for having better sound and build quality, the selection of DSP modes, Surround:AI mode and Auro-3D support. -Jon

    Wow! Very detailed breakdown. This is exactly the sort of thing I like to see.
    Interesting that the Emotiva is so limited. Native codecs can only be upmixed with their associated upmixer. That was patched out of most of the other receivers and processors. Its interesting that Emotiva never walked that back. Tells me I dont want the Emotiva for sure. I want the flexibility of a D&M receiver or the Yamaha (if only the Yamaha could process 13 channels)

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      While I still like my Emotiva, this Yamaha is the first unit I have tested that I felt could take its place. It out-of-the-box sound quality was up there with the RMC-1, but when you consider the Auro-3d, DSP sound modes, 8K support and solid execution for less money but still includes 11 amplifier channels it takes over. What I still like about the RMC-1 is the full set of balanced outputs and front wide support. Yamaha just needs to make a 16+ channel processor. -Jon

    Hi, thx for your videos, for your After testing (without need of balanced, Wided, .6)
    What s your choice (subjectively) between RMC1(Xmc2) /A8A)/ Sony 5000/7000 es?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I recommend different models for different types of enthusiasts and their application.
      RMC1 (XMC-2) for those who want top-tier sound, like to fine tune but don't care about all the extra sound modes and streaming services.
      A8A for those who want Auro-3D, top-tier sound, and prefer a simpler setup and a few extras and PEQ for those who ticker.
      Sony 5000/7000ES for those who can't place their speakers in the text-book positions (or don't have a full 9.1.4/7.1.6 set of speakers. Approaching top-tier sound with the benefit of a more spacious sound stage. With its proprietary, Sony-knowns best and non-visible approach to calibration, this is for the plug-and-play "trusting" enthusiast.

    Thx John. Question - how can I get the Artist Connection app via iPhone 14 pro max to stream the Auro 3D tracks properly - I can only seem to get aac 2.0 input - I have set my Rx-A8A to Bluetooth and DSP is to Auro 3D with my 7.2.4 speakers - the output does show 7.2.4 - is this what you did or am I missing something

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is what I did and my results seem to be matching yours. It is a bit odd for the input to be listed as it is - something like 2 / 2 / 0 ? I will need to run again to confirm. -Jon

    Fantastic review of these products! I have to say my head is spinning, all this stuff is getting too complicated, I'm old school, 7.1 still seems like more than enough to me.
    I'm considering the Marantz AV10 just for the level of quality it offers, not so much the advanced features. Right now all I have are the LCR and side speakers but that's only because I haven't built the rears or Atmos yet. I will eventually get those done but probably a maximum of four Atmos despite having three rows, I just can't imagine the need for more. It just seems like the industry is getting out of control with so many different formats 11.this and 13.that... I think I would like to see it move back toward more simplicity.

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with your comment - this is getting out of control. The industry is requiring their audience to become experts and understand all these details. As a result, they are losing their audience to sound bars and wireless mono speakers. Many customers finally decide that sound quality isn't worth all the effort and give in to the plug-and-plug solutions.
      The AV10 is expensive. I feel it is well built, but is it worth the asking price? I must say maybe until I can test - but I set a $5000 limit on the products I am reviewing this year. I have the pre-conceived notion that you can get almost the same level of sound performance for half the cost of the AV10. In a way a hope I am wrong, because I would rather have another tier up in performance to choose from.
      I feel two rows of Atmos are sufficient in most cases. You are going to hear the rows in front more then you will hear behind you.
      Jon

      @@ripewave You may be right about getting equal or near equal sound quality for less. Modern electronic components are pretty good these days so it's not so difficult to get good results without companies having to spend a fortune on higher quality IC's etc. I know Audioholics measurements on the AV10 are really good but I wonder if many less expensive options may be good enough that you can't really hear the difference.
      I like Emotiva as a company and I have their amplifiers but their processors haven't done well in Audio Science Review's measurements. Supposedly they are coming out with a, "Plus" series soon that's supposed to be better but who knows when these will actually arrive.
      One thing about larger companies like Marantz, they tend to have better engineering to handle software/firmware issues and may be less likely to have operational problems. Smaller companies might be able to make a good sounding product, but may not be able to make it work glitch free as well as a company like Marantz.
      I'm really not sure what to get, I do need balanced outputs because I have very long runs from the control room at the back of the theater to the front where all the amplifiers are located. I was initially using miniDSP 2x4HD along with Emotiva BasX amplifiers (both single ended) with an old Anthem AVM60 processor which is balanced. I had a slight hum that I could never get rid of until I replaced the 2x4HD crossovers with Flex balanced and the BasX amplifiers with XPA, this eliminated the hum completely.
      I've thought about Arcam but don't know much about them other than Audio Science Review wasn't impressed. I've had a lot of Anthem over the years but not at all impressed with their customer support, enough so that I don't plan to ever buy anything from them again. So, it's a dilemma, what to get??? The AVM60 has been problematic for some time, currently its display doesn't always come on so it's time to replace it, question is, with what?

      @@ripewave I'm going over to A&B TV here in Austin, TX this afternoon, I might come back with an AV10. I think they also carry Arcam so I'll look at those too. I really don't know what other option to consider. Trinnov is way to expensive and I'm not convinced it's any better than the AV10. Anthem is out of the question because I'm just done with them. Don't really know what else to consider besides the yet to be released Emotiva Plus series.

      @@ripewave Well, I did it. A&B gave me a good deal so I came home with an AV10. I'll try to do a short update on my channel if I have time but I have to leave for the airport about 6 pm to be gone for a month again. I just got home 9pm yesterday from about a month away and now I'm going again, home less than 24 hours to be gone probably another month or more. That's why I can't get my theater done!
