I've always thought it a shame that it was brown bears that evolved on Kodiak Island and not black bears. Can you imagine how cool HUGE Kodiak Island black bears would be? The largest black bear ever recorded weighed over 900 pounds dressed. That means it weighed more than 1,100 pounds alive. That's huge even for a brown bear. Now Imagine black bears 1,500 pounds plus. That, at least to me, would be an awesome sight to see.
I live in NC there is a female black bear behind my house that is over 1000lb she has been on my hundred acre property for at least 10 years she is a massive bear the biggest I have ever seen I've got a landfill on each side of my property and it's got some of the biggest deer/ hogs and black bear in the area nobody is allowed to hunt any of the property in the animals just grow some of the oldest black bear and deer in the area live around my property
Never met a grizzly, but had a few close encounters with black bears in Manitoba. One I saw from about three hundred yards away was said by locals to be over 800 pounds. Once had the privilege of relieving myself about 15 yards away from a bear when I stepped away from my camp that I was on with friends on a canoe trip. It went well,as I finished my business, talking to it softly and it went away without problem.
I just have to say that the occurrence of Ursus arctos east of the Mississippi River in most locations both in prehistoric and historical times in North America is hotly contested. In any case, it is interesting to see the American black bear taking advantage of the ecological gap left by the absence of it's larger relative.
Black bears kill plenty of large animals like caribou, even here in Alaska where there are LOTS of grizzlies. Also, you should not feel so safe as you say you do around them. When a black bear attacks it’s almost always preditory, he’s going to kill and eat you! When a grizzly or brown bear attacks it’s usually out of aggression and while awful, it’s usually not fatal. Just my 2 cents having lived closely with both of them my whole life. Great video, very cool!
@@UmongusSussehFrusseh They're absolute units. They often get overshadowed by Lions and Tigers whom they share a habitat with but when it comes to killing people, Leopards are better at it and have been historically the most prominent hominid killer. These cats are the best cats there is and are very adept at killing humans and other apes that even silverback gorillas don't even stand a chance
@ Not sure what you mean. We have black, brown/grizzly and polar bears here. I have little experience with polar bears but I’ve literally lived with the other two my whole life. I kill and eat them, hang their skins and skulls on my wall. I know them inside and out you might say. What’s your experience? TH-cam videos?😆
There's at least one area in Washington state, including North Cascades and Mt Baker-Snoqualmie Nat'l Forest, where Black Bears have also established as top predators. They've also evolved to aggressively hunt down deer, esp. deer calves. Recreation sites in the area, responded by trying to dissuade this practice, as one that is unpleasant to tourists. The deterrence, such as fire hoses, has limited, localized, effect. Interestingly, North Cascades is an area for the proposed re-establishment of Grizzly Bears.
Surprised they are not getting much larger, I live in an area where the food resources are huge and the black bears here minus the Grizzly that used to be here are getting huge compared to most black bears in other areas, they even are starting to look like Grizzly's.
Interesting video. I had never heard of this black bear evolution before. Wonder if they grow much larger after enough generations of mainly eating meat.
OK I have to disagree with you that the only bears you see in the American tundra are grisly, that's because you can also see grolar bears that were born of grisly mothers
Title on the thumbnail is a bit misleading as there are actual dark furred usurri brown bears referred to as black grizzlies in russia. These are black bears acting like grizzlies. Interesting, though!
I learned a little bit more about these magnificent black bears! Thank you!
Black bears in my area look like scrawny big dogs. I love them so much 😌
Just like the difference between western coyotes and eastern coyotes
No, because eastern coyotes are actually hybridized with grey wolves.

Just visit Vancouver Island

Tundra grizzlies are pretty small though. I recall seeing a few in Alaska on the north slope and they were no larger than typical black bears.
I know what you mean.
Blackbears in southeast Alaska can get the size of your typical grizzly. By that, I mean (HUGE)
Then I wonder how small the black bears there were.
@@UmongusSussehFrusseh There are none in the tundra west of Hudson Bay, only grizzlies.

Great channel. Keep up the amazing work. ❤❤❤

And because black bears are smaller, they have an easier time sneaking up on you. Would even be worse if your region had leopards.
@@justinianthegreat1444 Yeah leopards are terrifying.

Think you have your bears confused.

Which bear is best!

If that's the life they're having they might get bigger through time
Bears don't have the facial muscles to snarl & expose their upper canines like that in the a.i. pic... js.
In Colorado the bears were killing full sized cattle, just saying.
Show film of the black bear eating a seal 🦭
If you could cross a black bear with a polar bear you might end up with a bear that looks like a holstein cow 😂
This why we have stereotypes 😐
In 🕸 westvirginia has.blackbears that.weigh up to 800pounds
I know a guy that shot one in the eastern panhandle 438 pounds gutted.

The tundra wolves would dominate these bears I call b.s.
