NJ to Bermuda October 2008 Explorer OTS almost a hurricane walking wasn’t easy . At dinner the glasses on the table were shaking. The barf bags were out. Fortunately we didn’t get sick but some people did. It was good for sleeping . The ship rocked us to sleep. When we reached Bermuda the weather was Beautiful. An unforgettable first cruise .
It may have been 30 years ago, but I definitely remember the ferry between Rotterdam and Hull England, and back, with hubby and our two sons (1 and 5 years old). On the way to Hull it was bouncy before we headed to bed, but on the way back hubby decided he wanted to take in the movie playing (Lawnmower Man 2). He definitely regretted it, between how difficult it was to get to our cabin and how queasy he was. The boys and I were happily asleep for most of it.
Have taken 173 cruises, the roughest have been the Tasmanian sea between Australia and New Zealand, the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia , Drake passage and Bay of Biscayne.
Sailed the main seas on cruise ships. The worst was definitely the Tasman Sea between eastern Australia and New Zealand followed by the Bay of Biscay. The Bass Strait can throw a tantrum as well, it’s in line with the roaring 40’s
I've been to all of these bar the North Sea (yet). The roughest seas I've experienced is the Tasman sea between Australia and New Zealand. Not really scary "rough" just bumpy. Went through the Drake Passage (lake) 2 weeks ago.
The Drake Passage is so rough because the 2 oceans have different salinity & chemical makeups plus the 2 oceans have difference heights. The confluence of all these factors is the primary reason it's so rough. The slight squeezing of the passage is minor.
Haha ... Found this out the hard way .... Felt like a continuous earthquake and kept leaning sideways ... This is on Ovation of the seas returning from NZ to Sidney Australia Jan 2020 .... It was during the evening before we disembarked.... Thought I was gonna DIE out in the Tasman Sea!

After travelling through a Nor’Easter on two separate New York to Caribbean cruises, I won’t do that route again in the winter!

You think being in rough weather on a cruise ship is bad, do the North Atlantic on a Navy ship in a winter storm.
