This is the moment a pod of hippos are confronted by an inquisitive bull shark in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

    bit.ly/Vacationdeals
Stacey Farrell, from Heritage Tours and Safaris, filmed this interaction and told LatestSightings.com the story:
“While we were on a hippo and crocodile safari, we spotted a small bull shark swimming close to a pod of hippos. We stopped the boat along the bank, so we could watch hippos return to the water”
“Since hippos defecate in the water, this draws a lot of fish. If there are a lot of fish, it grabs the attention of the nearby sharks looking for a quick meal.”
“This water isn’t very clear, causing visibility to be very low. This made the shark a bit disorientated and it started swimming right into the sharks. This caused the hippos to get angry and start charging the shark. Luckily for the shark, it was much faster than the hippos and managed to swim away without serious damage.

Anyone else curious to know why the shark kept circling, not leaving the area. It got frightened off a few times, so clearly understands there’s danger, and yet it keeps coming back, even casually swimming into the middle of the group of hippos and seriously tempting fate. Curiosity perhaps?

I was thinking that maybe there was a calf nearby and the shark wanted an easy meal, but there isn't one in sight. I bet it's most likely just curiosity, assuming the shark accidentally wandered into freshwater, and thus has most likely never seen hippos before.

nuff said hippos don’t eat flesh how’d it choke on it. and also that’s a one in a time situation it’s like saying the wolverine (not the marvel character I mean the animal) killing a polar bear yes it happend but only once in recorded history. so it’s like kind of the same thing here a bull shark defeating a hippo is a 1 in 10000 kind of thing. it’s extremely rare and I dare to say in some cases impossible.

I reckon there was a very clever fish hiding amongst the Hippos. A bit like the wise old seals when the Great Whites are about, they tend to swim amongst the human swimmers to avoid being attacked. That's the thing about taking a swim in some continents, you're at the bottom of the food chain.

You would never see a great white and a hippo in the same location but if you did the shark would have a better than 50% chance if it had a surprise attack. The hippo while very powerful is really slow and wouldn't be able to get a bite on the great white. Great white do attack elephant seals, google them and see how big they are. About hippo size.

For the ppl that favor the sharks. Let’s see, the largest great white shark ever recorded in history, “Deep Blue” and estimated to weighs in at 2.5 tons that’s ( 5000Ib ), let me remind you that this is very rare, great white average at 1200Ib to 2400Ib. Now, the common Hippo weighs anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 pounds, with the heaviest known hippo was approximately 9,900 pounds and the male hippo continues to grow throughout its life. Hippos are known to have such thick hide that Nile croc would have hard time tear open a dead one without that death roll, and crocs have more bite force than that of a great white! Compare the largest to the largest, hippo weighs twice as much, on average it’s almost three times the size great white. Let’s be fair, if it’s in the ocean, great white definitely are faster and will attack from the bottom and side to side and keep taking bits till the hippo bled out slowly, although hippos are slower, but if it head butted the shark during an attack, it’s over, GW would be in a coma and the pissed off hippo will torn it into pieces. if it’s in Nile, there isn’t gonna be a fight. Can you imagine how much bite force a 15 feet 8000Ib hippo has.
