A friend gave me the paperback of that book in 1987. I loved it , reminded me somewhat of my dysfunctional Northern Yankee England family. When I was made into a film in 1991,I was curious to see it. They did leave out the character of Luke the brother who is a Vietnam Veteran. I thought Babra Streisand was a bit too intense as the Psychiatrist. Nick Nolte was surprising as the lead male character. The book was long and very graphic the scenes of violence and other things. It probably was difficult to adapt to a screenplay.
Nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture so your feeling that Barbra ruined it was just your feeling . Everyone is entitled to their wrong opinion .
@@pastre999 Obviously you did not read the novel. Barbara’s acting was fine. Firing Pat because “he did not understand the story was not.” Now if she followed the novel more it might have won those 11 academy awards. You are entitled to your wrong opinion though.
So many of his books have become great films and favorites of mine.
Great Santini is he only film from novels that came close to being as good. Lords of Disipline was horrible as was Prince.

She never "fired" Pat. They worked closely together during the whole process. Wherever did you hear this bit of misinformation ?@@blabbermouth777
