    Really nice performance on those games there. Especially when you consider the size of the machine. Perfect to carry around on the go.

      Yea the Windows performance is decent, especially with a graphics card, but DOS performance is outstanding, it chews through any game, even at high resolutions.

    I love to see these types of machines in use. The VIA cpu was highly underrated IMO. You could say you have the last of the cyrix cpu line since that's what Via built it on. Shame they didn't go forward with the CPU for desktop platform would have been nice to give blue and red some competition. Great review as always mate I may pick one of these up myself.

    • @maikmerten
      @maikmerten 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The VIA CPUs that actually got released are not based on Cyrix designs, but on Centaur designs (the design house behind the IDT WinChip CPUs). VIA bought both Cyrix and Centaur in short succession and what remained of Cyrix after mismanagement by National Semiconductors (who bought Cyrix a few years earlier) was not able to complete the successor to the 6x86MX/MII in time. So VIA just released a Centaur-CPU as "Cyrix III" to make some use of the Cyrix brand, later shortened to "VIA C3", succeeded by the "VIA C7".

    • @Aggrop0p
      @Aggrop0p 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You probably don't remember when they came out then. These CPUs were absolutely terrible and completely unsuited to modern tasks of the day. Don't forget that this demonstration is pretty much the best case scenario and well beyond what was possible at the time: old games (Half Life released in 1998, C3 came out in 2001 a full year after P4s for example), SSD storage and graphics cards that didn't even exist yet when this CPU was sold (Geforce 6*** released in 2004).

    • @rasz
      @rasz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @aussiebear22 no they arent, Zhaoxin is paper only, you cant buy them anywhere because they dont exist outside experimental tapeout engineering samples (if even that).
      Chinese AMD chips arent working around any US trade restrictions, those were directed solely at Intel Xeons. Chinese Ryzens are 100% AMD designs, its purely a fictional financial engineering endeavour to bypass high Chinese import taxes.
      In China everything is smoke and mirrors.

    • @rasz
      @rasz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VIA C7-M 1.2 GHz has a raw integer CPU performance comparable to HALF of Celeron 900, so around P3 450MHz from 1999, FPU is even slower, around 300-400MHz Intel Celeron.
      There is nothing underrated about those CPUs.

    • @MarkTheMorose
      @MarkTheMorose 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The C3 and C7 CPUs were designed to use low amounts of power, and were fine in their intended uses in Mini-ITX embedded systems: digital signage, EPOS, data logging from lab equipment, and the like. But yes, compared to contemporary AMD and Intel CPUs, they were slow.

    I am interested to see if an Audigy would have made and appreciable difference in gaming performance. I remember those cards lightening the load off of the CPU enough to give extra frames in a number of games. Thank you for giving an in-depth look at the systems capabilities, I think I may try to find one for use as a portable retro machine. Thanks for making my night Phil! 😊

    Revisiting this, it's worth pointing out that Phil now has a community-updated BIOS for this on his website, which fixes the integrated graphics issue. I've never seen one of these on eBay in the UK, but it might be relevant in your region.

    These little machines are awesome for retro gaming stations that can do double duty as an htpc as well, lightweight, low power, small footprint, and generally good enough specs for light duty work. The only drawback to using one of these is the lack of expansion but for retro that is not really a factor. Interesting fact the Asus RoG Maximus III Extreme p55 LGA 1156 high end 1st gen Core i motherboards use a VIA audio chip.

    • @BilisNegra

    Hey Phil, here's my holy grail Windows XP build, for fun:
    - plus point for DVD drive to browse the whole library from the date and before, minus point without DVD
    - plus point for use of the best possible low profile graphics card compatible with XP. Minus point, if no graphics card.
    - must have the smallest possible case
    - can look like an appliance case from the 2000s, bonus point for being a beige ITX case.
    - can use modern components for a sleeper PC's performance
    - plus point for including a floppy drive with card reader combo
    - plus point for external components in single color: white VS black
    - minus point, if cube case. point recovered if using a 5.25 bay spectrum analyser
    - must play HL2 flawlessly

    pci riser cards are available on ebay, but you will need to double-down on the search terms "PCI" to get a decent "PCI-to-PCI" adapter, but yes it is available & getting an 'AWE-16' or '24-bit_soundblaster (PCI)' added is pretty cool.

    I highly recommend the HP T510 thinclients. really good VIA 1Ghz Duel-core processor, Sata and 44pin IDE drive interfaces, mini PCI-e (can adapt to 1x PCI-e) can take up to 4gb RAM and often come with a very useful 16GB DOM SSD, happily runs Win7 and have a low power draw. Thanks for making a video on this. My bf has talked about wanting a Win98/XP and I think this might be the perfect budget option, especially if it can fit something like a TNT2 in there. I would consider my spare V3, but unfortunately my last one died and I still have no clue if it was a capacitor problem, or if the card just overheated and died, so I don't like using them without fans anymore, heh.

    Hi Phil, Another back to back great set of videos, you must be working 24/7 on these again.
    Nice to see some one else listens to 2CH at times.
    Re the OEM hard drive, i also wonder if it was installed upside down on those mounting holes, you should measure them and see if they are fan spec ( eg 80mm or so ) or will fit a hard drive cradle, they could have run with long IDE cables similar to how some android based media centres are - i have at home on the spare TV and have to be careful when i open it up as there is some extra cable length but you have to remember not to undo the lid and automatically move it to far away :)
    The other option would be if there was a cradle that was mounted on the edge of the machine just above the PCI slot, i also wonder if anyone makes a "fake" PCI card with 90 degree bend so that it just slots into the bus for support and is not electrically connected
    Re the onboard sound, i dont think i have had any success with AC97 dos drivers, so pure dos is no go, and you would have to use win98 and then exit to dos or PIF edit the file.
    With the XP installation, my 1 x Retail XP CD and the 2 education versions ( they are retail but sold via schools with no tax they were about$15 at the time compared to retail $80 - they are also upgrades all you need is pre exisitng Win95 or Win98, or you can use a blank hard drive and insert the Win95 disk 1 or Win 98 disk 1 or Cd's ) that i bought brand new and never used, all install and work fine, but they will not authenticate via Microsoft, i know they dont support XP updates anymore, but now you cant permanently install the OS on a old machine or reformat a existing system and reuse the same serial number, i left 2 separate machines online for 4 days and still noting happened. So that is why i bought the Dell desktop and Toshiba laptop and use the OEM restore CD's as they donot validate - are you having the same problem with fresh XP remaining a 30 day trial
    Again nice work.... I am surprised no one asked for Linux OS versions

    It is decent, I'm thinking about a similar thin client for W98 gaming, but if I can I would use a Sound Blaster in the PCI slot but I'm worried about the compatibility of the on-board S3 graphics processor. So lately I'm leaning more towards the Thinkpad T40/41/42 with Radeon 7500 or 9000.

    I have the same CompactFlash card and stopped using it in an adapter in my XP laptop because of the swap file problem. As you mentioned it's because it is a Removable Disk. This is actually a Mode of CF Cards and it is possible to change them to "Fixed" Mode to resolve these problems. I wasn't able to get the ATCFWCHG program to operate correctly even under Windows 98, though. I found that certain Windows Installer packages wouldn't install with the CF Card as well; either because of the swap file issue or because of the CF card being identified as removable.

    I'm curious about this retro-gaming-on-thin-client concept as I am tempted to get a secondary PC for retro gaming but space is an issue. Would you see any reason why I could not hook up an external DVD drive (an internal, I assume, is out of the question) and insert an EAX compatible sound card? EAX (and similar nowadays unsupported audio technologies) alongside a 32-bit OS are the main reasons for me to consider a retro PC for gaming.

    Phil: does the Windows 98SE's DOS work WITH sound? I noticed there were no "legacy" section in control panel, but did you get that working? If it would work, one could possibly use that machine as a DOS&Windows with graphics card (otherwise one would need to change between sound card and graphics card: dos win98).

    Great work Phil! :) I have ordered one with the 20% discount. Thanks for that offer. At the same time i buyed another wortmann model (TK3378) from ebay with an optical DVD Ram on the top (including in the topcover) Very nice. Its a standard Notebookdrive with slotin mechanism. The both cases are identical. Intern there is a second DDR2 ram slot. There was a original HDD too with a standard 2,5 metalframe screwed directly on the mainboard (directly over the CF Card slot) with a 2,5 44pin pata samsung HM160C (160GB, 5400rpm) and at last an original PCi Riser 90 degree. ;) At this point i have some issues with the cf card(16GB). After the install from the win98se cd it will do the first boot and there come an error "out of ram" and it doesnt load the desktop of win98. I dont know what it means. The machine has 2GB of DDR2 ram? I will try in the next day to install an old 16GB SSD. Otherwise i will try it with an usbstick. How do you install the win98? with a bootable usb stick or with a cdrom? for your information: there are some nice "goodies" for this machine. For example: a vesa mountingframe for install the case behind a standard screen with "vesa holes" at the back and two plastic feets for the safe vertical use of the case. Thanks again Phil for this video(s) and greetings from germany :)

      shit, i forgot the limitation of ram. ;) By the way, i found a workaround where you can use 1GB of ram: To limit access to 1 GB of RAM on Win98. Eventually its helpful for some guys (but first install win98 with maximum of 512MB ram!):
      To work around this issue, add the following line to the [386enh] section of the System.ini file:
      MaxPhysPage=40000
      This limits the amount of physical RAM that Windows can access to 1 GB. To add this line, use the following steps:
      Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file in the Windows folder.
      Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file:
      MaxPhysPage=40000
      Save the file, and then restart your computer.

      Actually, I was asking for my "OP tier" Windows XP machine. Its onboard is a Realtek ALC662, and it's pretty garbage in audio quality, even though its drivers do at least attempt to support EAX for games. I was asking what would be something worth considering for that system?

  • @vasileios6301
    @vasileios6301 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So by not working the onboard gpu on Windows 98,it eliminates the use of the Voodoo1,last possible solutions are Banshee or Voodoo 3,but I think they wont fit in there just like with the Voodoo2.
    I think its not that useful for XP in general,it will struggle in heavier staff but for Windows 98 I think its best to have a TNT2 or a Geforce 4MX,256mb ram and maybe a usb dvdrom and this machine will fly,it can even been connected to a crt TV that way for superb retro gaming.

      The VESA driver still works, remember for V1 you don't need a second 3D card, it just needs to be 2D. The V1 should work with even the stock VGA driver loaded. Plus you have the DOS V1 games, which IMO are more interesting. Like Tomb Raider for example. But yea, it's certainly an exercise of setting your priorities and thinking about what you want to do with this machine.

    Great project, I hope you can get the 9x drivers working. I had a P3-era laptop that had one of the S3 IGPs and it did really well with win9x (high res texture support). I did a little searching and there's a company called iBase that published CN700 video drivers (16.01.23.21) for model FWA7304. Also I wonder if you could try drivers for one of the other UniChrome Pro chipsets (wikipedia has a list). The XP drivers are packaged with VN800 and searching "VEN_1106&DEV_3344" suggests p4m800 drivers may work too.

    confirming that a regular STB Voodoo3 fits fine - wiggling it in is slightly annoying so you'll probably won't want to swap it around too often, and I would recommend putting a bit of iso tape on the cap near the CMOS battery as the V3 J2 connector is just maybe 1.5mm away. the important thing is that if you are serious about this, you'll definitely want a Terra unit that includes the original pci riser - the one I got from the seller is a 3rdparty unit that moves the card about 2mm away from the backplate, so it's not possible to screw it to the place (first picture). the computer also accepts ide flash drives, and they fit nicely right under the Voodoo3 (second picture).

      I've tried to load XP onto that 2GB flash drive from the second picture, and everything went fine, about 600MB free left after installing the drivers and shrinking the windows swap file a bit. should be enough for a couple of old games, and more can always be loaded from external storage devices if need be.

      Hmm I've never tried a SD to CF adapter, but IDE to SD, yes they are slower. CF cards are native IDE compatible, can max out the 133MBps. The IDE to SD card, I think it does 40MBps, which is still fast.

      Hi All, I have 2 older machines ( P100 and P2 using just the CF cards connected to the IDE bus, they are perfect on DOS and Win98, i also donot use a swap file in windows as there is no need with 256 or 512k ram.
      I have ordered and still waiting on a SD to IDE adapter, as i have spare SD cards from my raspberry pie and android phone, the price of CF cards is high when you compared to a stock SD card of say 8 or 16G
      Also you need to note the brand and speed rating of CF and SD cards, they is a very large difference in speeds in both read and write.
      The reason i use these now is because i have basically 2 x 400meg IDE drives left and 1 x 2gig, as they were made approx 1995 and 2001, they are irreplaceable with like compenents, i may take phils advise and buy a SATA to PATA adapter and just use a modern drive - some day

    i don't think that xp have a problem with swap because it is a memory card, it only have an issue because the card reader port is most likely connected via usb bus
    good alternative for sata ssd would be mini ide>>cf adapter and then windows would see the cf card as a normal harddrive. speed would be limited to ata 133 or ata 100 as the onboard controller would be a bottleneck

    I had an idea about the S3 drivers under Windows 98 producing a scrambled image. I have seen a distortion exactly like that on an old LCD display I have. It was actually an issue with the display not liking the signal the computer was sending. When I checked the output with other displays the image looked normal. Have you tried connecting other displays? Perhaps a CRT?

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @vrenthusiast71
      @vrenthusiast71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's too bad. Sorry the idea didn't work. That old display I spoke of was very picky about resolution and refresh rate. Changing either of those would often cause it to scramble and looked exactly like what you saw. It would often require power cycling both the PC and Display to get them in sync again. BUT... unfortunately it looks like you are facing a different problem. Bummer.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO if you're into gaming, you want a PCI video card anyway. The performance is better, the compatibility, more driver options. And if you're not into gaming, the VESA drivers work just fine for normal desktop work.

    • @senesiano
      @senesiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get your point... the thing is that I already have a XP and a Win98 PC, and several AGP cards available but no PCI cards. I'm trying to figure out what's best in order to add a DOS PC too. I know I can work it out with the super socket 7 (I actually use a lot of your videos and tutorials, I have made that PC worked as a 3 in 1 and it was perfect), but I don't want to fuck around with enabling/disabling cache, using more than 1 HDD, etc. I guess I'll just wait for a while in order to save some extra money to buy the thin client plus a PCI video card. Anyway, as always, your videos kick some serious ass and it's always a pleasure to check your channel.

It took me a few tries, but finally I have full color Windows desktop in 1280x1024. All it takes to make GPU run correctly is to install UniChrome Pro IGP drivers version 4.14.10.0068 AND select CRT only option in BIOS. I noticed with various drivers I had different types of glitches after boot on DVI, one type indicates drivers that won't work even with CRT only, and other apparently do work. I never managed it to boot correctly with DVI screen attached. Let me know if you need the drivers, I don't remember where I found them, but I can upload them somewhere.

    @16:19 You selected "AGP" at the "Init Display First" BIOS Option, so the Onboard Card is the primary Graphics Card, as it is connected via AGP internally. So maybe that's the Problem you have with the GF 6200? Beside this particular case, at my local computer store I was told, to never change this option, because its only relevant, when you are using two graphics cards. When you change it to AGP and use a stable one, it is no Problem. But when your AGP Card has a problem, you can't troubleshoot with an PCI Graphics Card, because the system then will never put out any video on your PCI Card. So i recommend to leave the option on Init PCI first, because it wont slow down your system. Greetings from Germany :)
