As a child of the late 70s and early 80s, and a huge basketball fan, I watched all of this happen. I love this documentary and I try to watch as many reactions to it as I can because I LOVE to see people realize how special both of these guys are and what they, and their rivalry, meant to the development of the game.
Hey...did you react to the 1992 Olympics Dream Team?! It's kind of a continuation of Magic and Larry story! For the last time the 2 of them took the court again but this time on the same team!
Bird is a simple man who doesn't give a shit how you look. Magic (or anyone else)didn't get any free passes before that respect or friendship intimacy is earned.
In addition to trying to keep competative edge...I think Larry kept people at arms length so if they "cut out" on him he wouldnt feel pain like when he lost his Dad...but, Magic wore him down with his charisma and genuine spirit. 😊 He is probably one of few in Birds inner circle. Just my thoughts.❤ and for sure I loved this documentary!
This documentary always brings me to tears every time, & I end up crying, like a little baby........I have so much respect for both Magic & Larry, and IMO, these 2 will always be the GOATS in my heart 💖💖💖
I agree 100%! The fact that they played different positions, but were their teams Heart & Soul and yet became good friends demonstrates you can compete against each other and still develop a strong friendship.
I was in my twenties during this era and always loved watching this Magic/Bird rivalry. Their unique friendship is so great and transcends time. Great job reacting to this documentary, it's such a special bond that these two have that I'm sure you enjoyed watching.❤
@@iamalexislewis ...perhaps the next series you may want to do is " The Dream Team Documentary". Thanks for your reply, hope to see more of your vids soon✔️👍
You have to remember that back then HIV was still thought of as a gay disease. That’s why everybody was so incredulous that he had acquired it. I remember being in the dorm at college when the press conference was announced. This was pre-internet btw. I figured he was retiring because of knee issues. It shocked the nation for real.
His vice. Unprotected sex? It is so amazing that someone who was diagnosed when he was is still here with us. I have a friend diagnosed about the same time who is a hemophiliac and got it from a transfusion. He still also is still going ❤❤❤
Although Bird was cold to Magic it was about getting in his head to win games that they weren't buddies although he obviously let the cat out of the bag by saying he was the greatest.
And @15:01 you know one of the three reasons Isaiah was NOT on the dream team. He questioned Magic’s sexuality, Bird hated the Pistons, and Jordan/Pippen hated Isaiah and the way they played.
It's hard to put myself in the mindset of people back then because I can't help but judge the other players for how they treated Magic post-HIV. I'm glad Larry didn't do the same, it's like Johnson said; Larry's a straight shooter.
Two of my favorite people. Magic seems like one of the most genuine and implicitly brilliant people ever and then you have Bird who, in contrast, was notoriously cagey (albeit hilarious). The two of them were kind of made for each other. They were inspired by their differences. Sometimes very different people meet and within five minutes they want to kill each other, but some of them find little missing pieces of themselves in each other and fall in a kind of love. You can really see that with those two. They're practically brothers.
loved your ending comments, was worried earlier you were looking at it a little wrong when you said magic got the edge and larry might be racist but at the end you really got the importance of both of them. it's not about basketball its about comptition and how each person handles it and how they show respect i guess you can say it's about 2 warriors who are very special and both have a lot of class, we need more people like them in this world,. i just subscribed and you did a great job

I felt same way as you do towards the doc when I first saw it years ago, I’m 80s kid I didn’t get into basketball till 91 when I discovered mj winning first title against magic, I noticed bird and mj as my favs at the time I always thought mj is better we didn’t have cable showing older games I never knew bird was this good, till the year Allen iverson draft day I saw something special in him I was 15 at the time I love basketball at the point and I’d play overnights after overnights playing in our projects basketball court, I even had one memorable night with one of my older brothers, it was like 1 am, during winter, a lot of snows, basketball court is frozen with ice and slippery, we’d go out there and play for hours till around 4 am, he’d cook us some ramen to warm each other up. I idolized iverson till his retirement, he’s my favorite but he’s not goat in my book tho, I discovered TH-cam having past nba videos, till I came across Larry bird ultimate mixtape I got hooked back into basketball here I am in my 40s and my body isn’t in good shape I still want to play basketball even tho I haven’t played in almost two decades, bird is goat to me till I rediscovered pistol Pete Maravich whom I do know about but never saw him play, just sport cards and pictures, he’d tell me pistol is godfather of basketball, if it wasn’t for Pete, there would be no magic no bird no mj, I ignored him but I ended up getting him pistol Pete sport card for his birthday since he never had anything related to him, he passed away in 2010, I saw pistol Pete videos on here I’m amazed my dad was right all this time, I know pistol didn’t have much of good career in nba, but what I learned about him I’d say pistol Pete as my goat, with bird trailing behind along with Earl “The Goat” Manigualt I doubt this would be read but it felt good getting that out
I was in my early 20s during the Bird/Magic match ups, and that was about the only basketball I ever watched, they were that entertaining. And PLEASE...please...please... Watch their David Letterman appearance...it's funny, and also very poignant. Even if you don't react to it, watch it.

Larry Bird after upsetting the lakers in 84. Had a converse commercial at lunch break Magic was going to his trailer and Larry said no way my mom has a big spread laid out. Magic said ok . But was concerned. But when Magic got there Larry’s mom asked Magic for a hug! Larry’s brother said you are my favorite player! During lunch they found out they grew up poor and fatherless. And found basketball as their escape! After that to this day they don’t have to talk long but they felt so close!!!!!!

Thank you ma’am for such an honest reaction, I loved it!
All right...I gotta ask everyone... Can we all see it now? All of us that came from a not so great lifestyle, watching the struggle of our parent(s)... that we are all people? Is it just me?
The rapid medical advances made in the 90’s (after Magic’s HIV announcement, followed just a couple weeks later by Freddie Mercury’s death of AIDS-related pneumonia) had a great deal to do with it. Freddie’s surviving band mates founded The Mercury Phoenix Trust and put on a huge Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert as an HIV/AIDS Benefit - when Magic started the Magic Johnson Foundation with similar goals, Queen Productions Ltd./ Mercury Phoenix Trust was one of the first and biggest donors. The two organizations still cooperate to this day, raising funds and awareness - and directing those funds to researching new treatments and to distributing medications to HIV+ patients in need.
What saved him was a great Dr who worked under Dr fauci . He silenced her for 5 years she had to turn over all her research to the government and fauci took credit what a fraud
