    This Core Concept video focuses on the Self-Consciousness section of G.W.F. Hegel's early masterpiece, the Phenomenology of Spirit, and examines his discussion of how self-consciousness is mediated by another self-consciousness. In other terms, self-consciousness exists as such only in relation to its other.

    So I am currently attempting to read and notate this text. I also looked up some explanations online because I cannot really understand what Hegel is trying to convey. I must admit, I still don't really fully understand the concept, but I think I am getting there.

      It's a small part of a much larger work

    Would you say that the idea of consciousness mediating itself through another is similar to the concept of transference in psychoanalysis? Forgive me if I am wrong or misunderstanding the video. I just recall the part in Zizek's "Sublime Object of Ideology" where he talks about understanding one's self through the actions of another (particularly in relation to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice") and the way that said cycle can mediate conflicts.

      I would say that transference is one particular dynamic of the more general consciousness mediating itself through another

    So, I might be misunderstanding quite a bit here, as i'm fairly new to Hegel, but this is what I'm gathering; The other is almost like a kind of mirror, through which the self's self-consciousness is mediated. So only through others are we truly able to be self-conscious. Yes?

    • @GregoryBSadler
      @GregoryBSadler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except that it's less like a mirror and more like another consciousness

      @@GregoryBSadler lol gotcha. Lacan used the mirror metaphor in (I think) a kind of similar way, so I figured that was an appropriate metaphor.

      @@Nalhek Nah, not really - lots of people get mixed up about Lacan's mirror stage. This will be useful - www.academia.edu/381657/Situating_Lacans_Mirror_Stage_in_the_Symbolic_Order

      @@GregoryBSadler ok awesome. I need to read something other than Delueze anyway before my brains start leaking out of my ears.
      Btw, I just want to say that I've been watching your content for years now and it has helped tremendously. Your videos got me into Nietzsche way back in like 2015 and then later on when I started delving into Heidegger, your videos were extremely helpful. I've been binging the half hour hegel today and It's remarkable how much work you put into all that.

    I appreciate a lot these videos. You do an amazing job that affirms life in the sharing of knowledge.
    I am not sure whether this video differs with the previous one about self-consciousness, desire and spirit, for in both I am left with the impression that Hegel is trying to communicate the transcendental nature of consciousness beyond each entity. Given that "consciousness" is not bound within the self, the self cannot fully grasp its own consciousness within its own limitation as a entity, and so explores consciousness within an entity that is also participating in consciousness. Such entities are autonomous in relation to their own limited self-consciousness as entities but they are also unified in the nature of consciousness itself within both. Am I getting it correct?

    Is the "other" self-consciousness within one person, or is this about seeing one's own consciousness in relation to that of another being?

  • @fortyeu789
    @fortyeu789 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No idea what any of this means. A consciousness within a consciousness? Does that mean our consciousness recognizes a secondary consciousness? Why are there three separate consciousness? What do you mean a consciousness for oneself and the other? Are these contradictions?

      Gregory B. Sadler thanks professor. You’re right, I really do need to re-read the source material. I guess I’m just so intimidated by the material, since the last time I’ve actually read Hegel (think it was the one on the spirit of history), I was a sophomore in high school, and didn’t really get the concepts. I will try again as a college student haha.
