I can't make that call. He does have a fantastic voice, but if I were forced to chose, I'd pick Bjorling for pure smoothness, though Pavarotti had great showmanship along with a fantastic voice, and then there is the raw power of the brass bull of Milan, Del Monaco. The moral of my post is that there have been many greats, all with glaring strengths, all great in their own way.

Whilst at grammar school in the 1960s aged 14, my music teacher asked the class to bring in a record from home. I was the only one who brought in opera... Caruso with "la donna e mobile" on 78rpm. I later discovered that my great grandfather was also involved in the opera. I have always been attracted to sad and trajic music. Still am.

This was recorded in the very early days of recording. The original recording was probably pretty scratchy. By the time it could be remastered it is an easy bet to say that the material they had to work with was really bad. I can only imagine the huge amount of Herculean effort and frustration it took to get this piece to sound as wonderful as it does. I have to give huge props and accolades to whoever remastered it. BRAVO! MAGNIFICO! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! (Loud standing ovation)

My great grandparents came from Cefalu, Sicily in the late 1889s and early 1990s...my maternal great grandfather was a fisherman in the Mediterranean Sea....as told to me by my father...My grandmother sang this song to me in Italian when I was a child!

Para mi madre, doña Inés, siempre fue el más grande, "el gran Enrico", como decía ella. Hace cuatro años, poco antes que ella muriese, vimos juntos un documental sobre él y me impresionaba ver como a a sus 87 años cerraba los ojos, se relajaba y disfrutaba de esta voz.¡Cómo la música transmite emociones! :)
This was recorded in the very early days of recording. The original recording was probably pretty scratchy. By the time it could be remastered it is an easy bet to say that the material they had to work with was really bad. I can only imagine the huge amount of Herculean effort and frustration it took to get this piece to sound as wonderful as it does. I have to give huge props and accolades to whoever remastered it. BRAVO! MAGNIFICO! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! (Loud standing ovation)

Ascolto molto spesso il Grande ed unico Caruso sia liriche che nelle meravigliose melodie classiche Napoletane chiudo gli occhi e provo ad immagginare che sono ad ascoltarlo dal vivo in teatro dal loggione riapro gli occhi e mi dico che resta sempre il più grande e insuperabile di tutti i tempi sia come possanza di voce interpretazione e sopratutto anima e cuore che da buon Napoletano non gli è mai mancato! Lanza ammirava Caruso e lo imitava nel canto da giovane ma poi secondo me, lui lo ha di gran lunga superato! Le interpretazioni di Mario delle canzoni napoletane sono fantastiche per lui, nato a Filadelfia e sempre vissuto in America. Tecnica, voce e sentimento, queste le componenti della magia di Lanza.
