  • Former Navy SEAL Trevor Maroshek put his life on the line to protect his country when he enlisted in the military after 9/11. His life was saved more than once by his four-footed partner, a German shepherd named Chopper who was part of the Navy SEAL dog program. Now Chopper is helping him recover from both the physical and psychological wounds of war, Maroshek explains as he and Chopper visit TODAY.

    • @AK-jt7kh
      @AK-jt7kh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@shiromaniw3527 The first thing to understand is that your dogs behavior is a reflection of your own behavior. When you are depressed, anxious, frustrated, and so forth - that causes your dog to feel those feelings too.
A large part of being a good dog owner is learning how to be a calm, confident, even-tempered person.
The second thing you need to understand is that a dog that doesn’t get exercise is going to be a bad dog. Dogs NEED exercise. A ton of it. Even little dogs need a lot of exercise - and not just exercise but mental stimulation.
Think of it like they are a 3 year old child sitting through a church service. They have a lot of energy, a very short attention span, and they don’t really understand what is going on around them to an in-depth degree so they can’t participate.
If you’re struggling with emotional baggage at the moment as everybody does at multiple points throughout their life, then it might be that you need to work to fix that problem first. Understand that therapy dogs are TRAINED to respond the way they do. Dogs aren’t just born like that. It’s true that they’re gifted when it comes to comforting their owners and relating to their feelings, but for a dog to set its own needs aside for yours requires training, education, and a handler who understands their needs.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this with your dog. Just know that soooo many people do. It’s not just you. It’s a struggle and it will teach you a lot - it’s like raising a kid. You’ll make a lot of mistakes and feel really guilty a lot of the time. Sometimes you will just hate your dog. Sometimes you will love them. But that is all part of the experience of being a dog owner, until you learn how to be really good at it. So you’re definitely not the only one going through this and you’re not alone.
Definitely, definitely put time, effort, and if you have it - money - into repairing your relationship with your dog. Ignoring it will seriously impact your quality of life. The time you need to spend learning and improving pales in comparison to the time you would have spent suffering from not doing those things.
Step 1 is to start by repairing yourself. Become a person your dog loves, respects, and feels safe around.
Step 2 is to learn about your dogs needs and to provide daily exercise (40 minutes) and mental stimulation. Look up games you can play with your dog online. Practice working with your dog as a team. Consider hide and seek. Scavenger hunts for treats. This kind of activity is way more important than a walk, but walking your dog is likely to make them behave a lot better because it tires them out.
Step 3 is to learn about dog psychology. Realize that your dog is just a dependent, small child in a canine body. How they behave is a reflection of how you handle them.
      Good luck!

dogs and animals have a long and proud history of service not only in times of peace but also in times of war. Dogs have really proven their worth since 9/11 and will continue to provide that "paws for the cause" that soldiers everywhere value so highly. My own two bullies keep me going on days when nothing else will. Ya know?

This is heartbreaking, know I'm watching in 2020 the greatest drawback dogs have is they don't live long enough!
I lost my magnificent k9 5 years ago, that connection is irreplaceable and crushing at a most personal level.
Not a day goes by without her in my mind.
Finally, I realized what a once in a lifetime privilege I had to walk beside and share time and space with this one in a million canine...
I believe I will see spike again because it won't be heaven without her.

If you get a chance watch the movie "Hatchi". That dog was real and a statue was erected for him. Omg☺💝

But there should be more focus and awareness on true heroes like our service men and women and educators. They should be the millionaires
