Love this game, first time I setup a colony I set it way to far out away from the center of the galaxy and had to rush back to defend it from a massive invasion while dodging pirates and navigating space anomalies, all while using said pirates for more gas for my fleet. 10/10 would recommend.
Just to make sure this does not misguide new players: You should definitely not start with doing that, it does hold value to have a colony far out for self made supplies and fuel, for storage, .. But in general, for multiple reasons, you want to get the best planets with the closest proximity to the core, meaning the middle of the star map.
@@9kArdos3 For sure, haha didn't mean to mislead anyone XD, quite honestly I was probably to early on when I did it as well. Pretty sure it ended that run :/

Obligatory "Hey Hey People". Early Tip, you should always salvage a ship, even if just to scrap or sell it, you can also mothball a recent salvage to avoid spending any supplies on repairing it until you're ready to. Additionally, speed is king, the faster your "burn" speed and combat speed are, the more readily you can control the flow of battle, whether it be chasing a fleeing foe or escaping one in turn. So don't fall into the trap of seeking out the largest and typically slowest ships out there, if they don't have the speed or the range, they effectively can't fight. Though not all ships of the same class are the same, take the Pirate variant of the Falcon cruiser, which comes with 11 Burn speed standard, which is actually faster than the Wolf frigate's 10. Course you rarely need or can use more than 10 burn. And for those not in the know, a Cruiser is two classes larger than a Frigate, so it can hold a lot of weapons, mostly missiles, and as such can be significantly more deadly, especially if kitted out with Sabot anti-shield missiles and whatever form of anti-ship missile/torpedo you can find. I prefer Reapers, which are basically dumb fire space nukes, two can kill or cripple most Cruisers. Also, Civilian ships do operate differently from Military ships, they will typically fight more reserved than their military counterparts, even if given an Aggressive or Reckless officer though modding them with Militarized hull mods can make them more aggressive and effective. So keep that in mind when assigning your officers, civie ships are generally only useful for logistics after the early game. Carriers also play far more reserved, so don't expect them to use most of their weapons in anything but the most dire of situations. Tip regarding Subspace, if you need to go through a storm, switch your fleet to silent running, it'll eliminate any damage you'd otherwise take from the storm. Lastly, never trust AI.
I remember watching Aavak's play on this, was super fun. Loved the skill that basically repairs D-mods over time, making any wreck you pick up eventually something. I think he's streaming it again today, too. That's so much content between the two of you! Nice one.

One of the few times I'm ahead of the game on Splat! I only got it a few months ago, but it's a great game and I highly recommend it to anybody who thinks it looks good. It's only 15 bucks, it's got a great story, and the gameplay keeps you coming back again and again to try new things. I've heard the modding community is great, but I haven't even touched anything there because the base game has given me dozens of hours of solid, fun gameplay, and I honestly don't have much I want to change. The one thing that I don't like is that the late game sorta narrows the viable amount of strategies, and I've found that you can only really use phase ships (you'll learn what those are as you play) if you wanna be consistently successful against the toughest enemies. Also, don't neglect building up your colonies! As soon as you can, getting at least an industrial planet down to be able to produce your own ships is gonna be a godsend in the late game when encounters can result in at least a few minor losses.
Hey splattercat, just letting you know one of the reasons the second in command handles fights better is because they deploy their ships in front of the enemies. When you pursue enemy fleets in the deploy option you can click small ships several times to deploy them in different parts of the map
Splat, in those battles where the enemy is fleeing you can actually deploy (some of) your forces to cut off the enemy retreat. In the deployment scream, if you click on a ship that is being deployed, you can cycle through "deploy", "deploy left" and "deploy right".
This costs 15 bucks for something worth 60+. I feel like I've robbed the devs. I'm glad people like setth and splatter are giving it exposure, it deserves it.

Really? I remember years ago that the solo developer/owner was very opposed to going Early Access on Steam. Something about how they had too many requirements and demands and he only worked on the game part time. That was a long time ago, so it's good to see he may have changed his mind.
@@JookySeaCpt Well, he doesn't want early-access and thus will release on steam when it goes gold. I believe that's the official stance last time I checked, which was a few month ago.

Great little game with a great modding community. Getting your own custom ships into the game was fun, I basically got imperial star destroyers and the executor in my fleet.
This is a fantastic game, loads of fun. Like Splatty said, you can fly your ship or if you’re unsure what to do, click and command like an RTS. Lots to do…
amazing game! have been playing it for years every now and then, realy addictive stuff. its the kind of game that keeps popping back into your head after half a year to a year, and it doesnt go away until you play it for another 20ish hours. thats how awesome it is!
I had the same thing that you described on my first playthrough! I've found a huge Domain-era ship, way deep in space. I nearly got back. I've got no supplies and not enough crew. I've barely made it home. Almost all crew died of starvation. But I was able to store it at that free storage on terraforming station. AND then after lot of time I was able to find funds for supplies and weapons to refit and repair it. It burns supplies like crazy. That's ship you want to fly if you know you would have heavy fight.
Like many others, I learned about this game through Sseth, and it's rapidly gone into my top 3 favorite games of all time. This game practically oozes quality and care, it's an absolute steal for its price.
i got starsector soon after it was playable and have stayed with it - great game. My last playthrough was a full fleet of tanked onslaughts and my ship was a sniper paragon. I just sat back and picked off enemies while they got stuck on a wall of onslaughts. I also modded the fleet and engagement size so that there could be 50 ships deployed in battle on each side. It uses a lot of RAM but the fights were incredible. Another cool feature is you can colonize planets and you can produce fuel/supplies for your fleet.
i am so glad i found this channel, already found multiple games that i never heard of and would not have heard of other wise like this one, definitely going to stay for more hidden gems
Dam you SplatterCat, spent another 15 quid watching your vids (couple hundred this year thanks to you) but love the game so far and any other you've recommended. Keep up the GOOD JOB
Never underestimate the power of a Shepherd drone tender. They're cheap to deploy, cheap to man, and cheap to buy. Plus, they give you more salvage per ship in the fleet. My first fleet comprised mainly of these ships, and a few basic line ships that could slug it out. The drones these things spit out just overwhelm enemy PD and melt through armor consistently. If one or two of the drones die, they just get rebuilt in short order. It's really a ship that punches above its weight class in high numbers.
Great game, the modding community is amazing as well, you can greatly increase the content and add new factions. There are huge expansions as well like the Nexralin mod which makes it a 4x.
Yeeeeees Starsector! This game is incredible, I've spent dozens of hours on it, and I know I've basically only touched the surface of it (fighting pirates and making big bucks selling weapons to terrorists and heroin to the same pirates). I'm looking forward to the next time I have the urge to play it.
Outfitting(+understanding of how and why) of ships with weapons and mods in general and for special occasions is at the very core of enhancing high yield/minute invested. Press SHIFT to aim with mouse in battle and I dare say don't sell weapons at all unless you must, until you have hundreds of hours in the game. Have fun!
@@9kArdos3 Thanks for your reply, but I think you may have answered the wrong comment lol. I had a lot of fun trying a bunch of ships and builds, with my main manually piloted ships being the Hammerhead with dual dakka dakka canons to go with its faster firing system (I forgot the name, but I think it's a pretty common build), and the Doom for the satisfying mine laying. I also tried a fleet with a lot of Kites equipped with missiles and torpedoes. However it was very tedious to maintain since they would regularly get destroyed, so I returned to carriers. Well, now I want to play it again! Here comes the all-nighter 😂
I think that the Nexerelin mod is the closest thing we have at the moment, though I'd say that the upcomin Distant Worlds 2 may feel similar to what you want.

I respect the developers independence from monopolistic steam.
@@msolomonii9825 How is Steam monopolistic? There is competition from GOG, Epic, Ubisoft, Humble Bundle...
@@BubbaSatori ya, steam is just better than any other of them lmao
This is top of the line in its genre, exactly what i was dreaming about in '98. A lot of mechanics could not be shown in this video - you should maybe also try to check some more lategame stuff
Splattercat playing Starsector? Hell yeah.
He's done it a few times. Seems to be a big fan.
Amazing game! One of the best indie games ever made.
this is the best space game of all time with best lore.
great to see another youtuber covering this wonderful game
Honestly this is the immersive space Sim we've always wanted, and it's been here for a long time.
"Everybody is a bad guy in their own respect in this game"
So just like in real life ;)
You had me at SPAZ's big brother. I loved that freaking game.
[F] for Total Biscuit
Thanks for making me aware of the Starsector update, Splat.
Thank you, good sir! I love this game and enjoyed watching you play it.
Great little game with a great modding community. Getting your own custom ships into the game was fun, I basically got imperial star destroyers and the executor in my fleet.
Picked this up after your twitch stream and I’m enjoying the hell out of it. Keep on keepin on brother!
This is a fantastic game, loads of fun. Like Splatty said, you can fly your ship or if you’re unsure what to do, click and command like an RTS. Lots to do…
This is almost like Sunless Sea. I'm liking this.
Hey hey people, the merchants guild sends their welcome
amazing game! have been playing it for years every now and then, realy addictive stuff. its the kind of game that keeps popping back into your head after half a year to a year, and it doesnt go away until you play it for another 20ish hours. thats how awesome it is!
My story of my actual game, everytime i go to exploration coming back is always the problem
Like many others, I learned about this game through Sseth, and it's rapidly gone into my top 3 favorite games of all time. This game practically oozes quality and care, it's an absolute steal for its price.
Splat: this is one of those fantastic games that a lot of people have never heard of...

I bought this game many many years ago before there was an open world, only single missions.
I still come back to it to this day every now and then.
WHAAAAT? splatty playing starsector? hoo boy this is gonna be good
Love how you reference TotalBiscuit. He was the first video game youtuber I ever watched I think. Rest in peace
i got starsector soon after it was playable and have stayed with it - great game.
I'm just blown away by the amount of content, and its quality, best of both world in sum, this is so cool.
I love that more people are finding this. I'm making a mod for it right now, hoping to have the first release up in the next few weeks.
i am so glad i found this channel, already found multiple games that i never heard of and would not have heard of other wise like this one, definitely going to stay for more hidden gems
Thanks for reminding me of this game dude!!
I haven't played it since like 2012, back when it was still called Starfarer XD
This game is a GEM!! Thaaanks SplatterCat!!!
Bought this one after seeing SsethTzeentach's review. Probably the best impulse buy I've made in my life.
"I've always maintained..." That's what makes the statement 100% funnier. High comedy. Top drawer.
I love the combat, the graphics and the customization options in Starsector. I'd love a 4x game with this battle system so much.
That's a really good idea
I think that the Nexerelin mod is the closest thing we have at the moment, though I'd say that the upcomin Distant Worlds 2 may feel similar to what you want.
I just got the game yesterday and I was up all night playing so much fun! The game was on my radar for a good while and I'm glad I was finally able to buy it now.
One of the best most underrated games of all time
I stopped watching so I wouldn't get spoilers and immediately purchased it. Love these kinds of games.
NGL, I could almost feel my eye twitching every time I saw you not using sustained burn.
Been playing ever since Sseth's vid. I started playing games on old macs that my dad and uncle had laying around. Games like diablo 1 and Aperion. Among all those shareware games was Escape Velocity. It will always hold a special place in my heart and EV Nova has stood the test of time very well. These games my not have existed if it wasn't for Ambrosia software. Fractal has definitely made the gemstone of Space sims, though.
The one game i actually bought twice, just because i wanted to support the devs. They deserve it, this game is amazing.
Played this game to end game 2 years ago when I had my baby. Now just had another baby and you post this video. Guess I better play it again !
Got it for close to 3 years, bot it due to seeing it here at your channel ( or at least I thing so ) it is quite a fun experience this game :) + I can play on both my pc and my laptop !
Really love this game. One of my all time favorites.
This reminds me a lot of a really beefed up version of the 90s game, Escape Velocity.
Well, I was sold on this game at 20:54 with that nice little monologue.
New Starsector vid. Thanks Splat
This is the best game of its type for sure .
Splatty knows what reputation is. Is solid. If he doesn't make this a series on his channel...not so solid. Crow comes for you.
It feels like Escape Velocity, but with an old RPG battle map. I like it!
played this game on and off for the past few years and it's amazing plus there are some nice mods! worth every penny
I play this game on and off for literal years! The updates arrive at a glacial pace but the game is so so good.
