I read his White Whistle story like this: He is willing to give everything up, to sacrifice everything for his science. Including himself. He sacrificed all this children, who loved him. If he sacrificed himself to get a White Whistle it would show for me that he has no boundaries, not even for himself.

I also interpreted his story in this way as well. It’s like he is in a constant never-ending cycle of sacrifice to fuel scientific progression. With this, his contradicting actions towards his loved ones is kind of comprehensible in a twisted way.
It kinda felt that he wanted his loved ones to experience the scientific progression and advancements, but the only way he though that would be possible was to literally include them in the progression. He fulfilled his daughters wish of being a white whistle by literally making her into one. He really feels like a being of the abyss in that way.
I feel like this kind of also connects into his title of being “The Lord of the Dawn”. The “Dawn” symbolizing “Progression” and his supposed goal of sharing the Dawn with everyone. However, he is the Lord that fulfills everyone’s dreams by literally weaving them into the Dawn.
No matter what everyone says, does or feels, he always brings progression to everyone. Like how the Dawn comes everyday to bring forward the first light continuing on to the sunrise.

Uh, that's what his white whistle is. Through the usage of various relic including the zoaholic, he sacrificed himself. The reason he's working on acquiring the Blessing is because he's technically just a copy of the original Bondrewd, and so while he's immortal if he has enough bodies to swap with, he doesn't get all of the benefits a 'real' person would get.

Another level of complexity that's added to all of this is just how "kind" he is, like you said he has love on his side, and genuinely wants the best for Prushka, Nanachi, and even Riko by the end. He never stopped caring about the hollows left behind, and he still loves them but his worldview is so warped and twisted that he can continue on with his experiments anyway all for the sake of knowledge and to further the exploration of the abyss.

And his turning Prushka into a cartridge was such an interesting betrayal, while simultaneously being the best he can do to help. He got his goal, of getting blessed, but he also seemed to know, that she would become a white whistle for Riko, sacrificing his daughter for her so Riko wouldn't need to sacrifice someone herself to get a whistle and continue on their journey. And now Prushka can join them on their journey in the form of a white whistle getting what she wanted too in a twisted sense.

I do think you overlooked one very important detail with Bondrewed that makes him so effective. It is not that he doesn't care about Nanashi and the rest. In fact, what makes him so threatening is quite the opposite. He really does care and love them as a father. We can even see him express concerns for Nanashi's safety at one point. However, he doesn't see fatherly bonds as any hinderance to what he does, and that is the real scary part about his character.

Bondrewd is the definition of "For the greater good" and it is a very logical conclusion which allows him to have no malice and even love. Everything he is doing is for the ultimate goal of saving the whole. In his mind he loves and respects those who have been sacrifices in the name of the greater good.

    • @mauriceelet6376
      @mauriceelet6376 ปีที่แล้ว +15

i dont think so. at least its not the whole story. He kinda goes out of his way to not let the children in fear. You dont need to do that. You could just say: its for the greater good and they dont matter to anyone anyway. But i think they matter to him. He might be able to love whole heartedly. But he places his research over everything else for whatever reason. The difference between: "I love you but in order to save the world i will hurt you" and "I love you and will conduct research with you" (cant put it better) is small in action but significant in mindset. I think "not hurting someone you love" is just not something he thinks of. At least if it doesnt benefit him. For him love and research are so far apart, they dont touch each other ever.
the moment nanachi joins him if he doesnt hurt the others is the best example here. the fact that he already cuts at reg while making nanachi the offer is proof that he doesnt understand ppl caring for each other dont want each other hurt. otherwise he would have waited until she ether aproves or hid his doing and regs fate from her. it was a supprise to him that she could want something like this and he was honest about the mistake he made.
He is kind of like a farmer raising live stock. He will care for the cow, he loves the cow. Giving her scratches, feeding her, talking to her, petting her, playing with her. And at one point he will slaughter the cow and eat the cow. And he will say: "That was tasty", and go about his day. It doesnt come to his mind that what he does is wrong, because "love" and "not hurting each other" are two separat things. its not that he cant comprehent love or pain of others, otherwise he would not be able to make prushka trust and love him. he would not know how to behave infront of the childen. but there is no connection to him in this. i mean do they need to be concios all the time? someone who wants to minimize the suffer would probably drug them up or something. and we aknowledge that he loves and cares. at least he thinks he does. i guess he probably cant hate anyone ether. if you do something for your own good and succeed he may even applaude you and be happy for you. just like with nanachi and mity. so he knows how others feel and can project that. he is empathic here, but will try to kill you anyway if you are in the way at the same time. you cant be mad at a rock or a tree for beeing there. and i think it suggests that he doesnt view anyone as equal. maybe in power, but he can deal with that. he just doesnt respect you in any way, shape or form, or your wishes and how you go about your life. you are so far beneath him in his world view, that he doesnt care if he hurts you. he doesnt think about it at all. he knows it, but he doesnt think about it.
and that challenges one thing: love, empathy and the respect for each other, the willingness to put others befor your own ambitions, is not the same. he is the perfect narcissist in that way. though he is not really one, otherwise he could not know how others feel. its this logic brake that makes him so interesting and hard to understand at all. because we cant comprehent the logic behind his actions.
in a way its like sauron doesnt think anyone would want to destroy the one ring. he can just think of ways they want to use it against him. it is a flaw, otherwise he could have nanachi as a partner like he wanted.

This is why “greater good” is a bullshit philosophy. There is always something greater that any sacrifice can be justified. In a wide enough scale, long enough time anything is justified and logical. For example, in 20 billion years the universe will die to entropy erasing all information. So what’s the big deal in commuting some genocide when it going to erased anyway?

  • @Alacaelum
    @Alacaelum ปีที่แล้ว +105

Bondrewd most scary thing for me is his lack of malice. He causes pain and suffering but not at any moment I felt like he took any pleasure in that, he sincerely felt that was a necessary action.
This doesn't mean he didn't rationalize in a pretty "malicious" fashion when necessary, like taking orphan children from far countries that no one would miss and he himself admitted to having chosen because of that, but he didn't hate them didn't see them as useless... for him, he saw that even as a giving them meaning in life, which is a very dark manner... he did, Nanashi would have died in her country, but in the Abyss she became something unique and even found someone she loved.
Bondrewd's moral compass isn't nonexistent, it is warped beyond recognition but it is still there.

I like to think either the ones taking the curse would have to love the other person who's being blessed, unconditionally or that Bondrewd loved his children, but in a more toxic way (I guess).
And I like how MiA makes it feel so unfair that throughout all of this Bondrewd got what he wanted through the power of love, which is something to be pure and wholesome. Not turning them into experiments and cartridges. Just showing how much more messed up the Abyss can be, and we're attracted to it just to solve the mysteries of it.

If you're more familiar to fantasy, his character inspiration must mostly be from a Lich.
Ageless deathless lord with nothing but the drive to explore forever more. He's so focus on the objective he would do anything to achieve it. I don't think he see the kids as enemies, but promising students/children he's trying to teach.

Edit: Also don't forget Riko is also extremely curious, and her mom is the Lord of Destruction no less. I'm willing to bet when she, if she returns from the Abyss, her destruction and twisted nature will make dear Bondrewd blush. As he always says: Brilliant!

What's really beautiful is that how the immediate next arc in the series is connected to this one. When you realize that Bondrewd sacrificed even himself in order to learn more about the Abyss, it makes you question why would someone even want to come down here if it take this much craziness to survive down here. But the next arc explores that question from the very beginning. How the cruelties of the real world drive people like Vueko, Belaf and Wazukyan to the Abyss, how your eyes can long even for such a terrifying place, and the miracles you can achieve by doing so.

the best thing about this villain is that he is just a person who is just purely based on science. nothing else. sure he can display some sort of emotions and affections but he only does it to fulfill all his goals in the name of scientific discoveries. he cares about every child he hurts but he doesn't do it just to be a sadistic maniac. he doesn't laugh maniacally or enjoy torturing. he enjoys discovering new things. its just that the torturing part is just a step on fulfilling his goals. but he also finds amusement on other peoples goals hence he let nanachi and her friends go at the end. they proved that their desires to defeat him and go further down the abyss is stronger than his will to discover. it doesnt really matter to him if they win or not or if he dies or not. he accended beyond any human emotion. he is truly disconnected from the world around him. and it made me admire this character so much. he is not evil. he just acts like a higher being who thinks of everything as dirth without being prideful about it. hes just like rick sanches that things everyone is just a lump of organic material that can be replaced infinitly. nothing else.

    Great video!
With the white whistle point, I'd even take it a step further and put it in section one where you talk about villains that poke holes in the protagonists' beliefs/morality. The very idea of a human life being the price to pay to obtain a white whistle was shocking to hear as a viewer since, up until the movie, I was under the impression that every color of whistle was artificially manufactured. (But it also made sense in retrospect as to why there were so few white whistle holders and why the white whistles can only be used by their owner.)
But instead of Riko being appalled by the idea and stopping her adventure short because she refused to let anyone sacrifice themselves for her, she's not as taken aback as I assumed she would be, and by the end, she had no problem using Prushka to activate the vessel that took them down to the 6th layer.
It goes to show you that Riko's morals (while not totally bankrupt) still share some similarity with Bondrewd's in the sense that she is willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to uncover the mysteries of the abyss. And looking back on her adventures with Reg, you can see snippets of this attitude in the way she handles obstacles. Like when she had no problem eating the Corpseweeper that they had just witnessed eating another cave raider (and almost eating her), or in the 4th layer when she was poisoned and had Reg try to amputate her arm in a way that would still let her cave raid in the event that she survived. So it makes sense as to why something as shocking as sacrificing a human to obtain a white whistle isn't something that would totally put her off.
And from this discovery, it also makes you think about other white whistles like Ozen and Riko's own mother, and who THEY must have sacrificed to obtain the whistles they have now. It shows that any cave raider who decided to challenge the 5th layer and below has some form of blood on their hands. Nobody is exempt. And that's what makes this journey even more unsettling.

I love how, in a sense, the first scene in which we see Bondrewd gives us a very clear picture of what he is like.
And it also tells us a bit about what Prushka is like too.
The time we first see him, he is monotonously walking in a line with his group, when Prushka sees him, her first reaction to this unnerving and inhuman sight is to immediately run towards him with her arms outstretched, showing that this armored man with an emotionless gait is normal to her.
And when she hugs him, he returns it, but while not rejecting her embrace, he shows a minimal amount of enthusiasm towards it. As though he doesn't understand the desire for physical affection and is only entertaining her for the sake of it.
He doesn't look like he's pouring any emotion or energy into the hug whatsoever.

I agree that there sre different ways to look at Bondrewd. The way I saw him was not as a man but a desire. Whatever man Bondrewd was before is now a whistle that he wears. Bondrewd is the unchained desire to find the truth of the Abyss a desire that burns everything and everyone in search of that truth. No one can escape his flames be they those he loves or those he abhors.
Another thing that makes Bondrewd a great antagonist is his foil to Riko. Both of them are delvers who are trying to uncover the secrets of the Abyss the only difference is their methodology.

  • @ConvincingPeople

I feel like what's so effective and shocking about Bondrewd is that this duality of feeling very sincere warmth towards people to whom he does unspeakably cruel things is so true to how many deeply abusive people conceptualise their relationships with others. It's an old saw to say that no-one sees themself as the villain of their own story (or else so rarely as to be a different conversation entirely), but it gains further dimension with Bondrewd in that he to some extent recognises his own monstrosity but justifies and excuses it as necessary even as he performs many of these acts with a morbid relish. Just a wonderfully sophisticated and disturbing character.

Bondrewd is... a weird one for me. In his arc, yes, it's such a flawless execution of a villain, I don't think it's been topped too many times (Makima comes to mind). But I do wonder how that flawless execution will hold up by the end of the story. Slight spoilers,
Recently in the manga the group meets a new white whistle who mentions the 2000 year cycle and that time is almost up. This is something that can be inferred from the first episode. Bondrewd clearly knew his time was limited, and I wonder if he would've taken a different approach given more time before the prophesized disaster brings a swift end to his experiments. But this does beg the question, why exactly isn't he working together with other white whistles? Are their goals that different? We don't know anything about this white whistle so there may be a good explanation, but for someone that is so calculating, so efficient, I don't believe he would've ignored valuable resources like this, and we know he was able to venture to the lower layers and return to his base. I'm curious to see how Bondrewd continues to play a part in the story, like he did in the season 2 arc.

keep in mind, in the same chapter (or the one before it, been awhile) we learn that ALL the white whistles were called down to the 5th layer to do SOMETHING for an extended period (several months at least based on her crew's gossip and the rough timeline the death of the Twins leads to), which Ozen just recently got back from, which is also how she had Lyza's stuff, she stopped by the Field of Flowers on the way back up and found the grave (and also why she assumed that the other two were still hanging around at Idofront, though that was also because Bondrewd didn't send the letter that they had made their Last Dives due to being annoyed at them both breaking protocol and not giving a proper final report).

He’s compelling through a screen, but he exhibits the most dangerous sort of personality. He’s basically like a charming serial killer. The comments reflect this sort of misplaced sympathy - he’s “kind”, he “cares”. He cares about people (which he treats as things) in relation to his own goals and interests, he finds their personality interesting in the same way we find the backstory interesting on the objects in Antiques Roadshow. He does not love or care in any meaningful sense.
When Nanachi says at the end, “I should have smashed the mask”, well, that’s true. He’s what Hannah Arendt described in Eichmann in Jerusalem - an evil so self-centered and matter of fact that the malice and viciousness we expect is lacking and we end up almost unable to see what it clearly is.
He’s evil. Charmingly so, but absolutely evil. His existence is a danger to everyone else. This is not to me a sympathetic character.

Oh this video is BEAUTIFUL! I didn't think about the alternate interpretations of why Bondrewd became his own whistle. I mostly saw it as him seeing it as the easiest way to get it. Why go through the troubles of bonding with someone else only for them to die, when he can just jump to another person? Though, his body-jumping to the Umbra Hands would also kill them, as they seem to cease to be after either submitting to the Zoaholic or when Bondrewd takes them over.

I have to say. When it comes to antagonists/villains there is the main grey typical ones that make it cliche' after awhile. Then once in a blue moon you get Bondrewd which takes the title and flips it upside down. I think that's what impressed me about him. Many has stated: He loved the children even as he experimented on them, remembered their names, held no ill will toward Nanachi despite everything he subjected her to along with the rest of the group and as I remember his last words: "I wish you many blessings and curses on your journey ahead."
You loathe him for atrocities he's committed, but you can help but fall for the way he lures you in with his words. You unknowingly leave your guard down and are vulnerable until you realize its too late and he has you. It's what made him terrifying. He is one of maybe two antagonists that captivate me by how they act. The other? Kain from LoZ series.
"And that is why. When I must sacrifice my children to the Void. I can do so with a clear heart."

He cares about all the kids he experimented on but he's still willing to torture them. Almost like he's deluded himself into thinking what's he doing is necessary, that being said it was necessary to make a white whistle out of a dead human but doing it for his own daughter is just so messed up. Watching him die was the most satisfying villain deaths I've ever seen, but it's bittersweet because due to his clones he didn't truly die he was just significantly weakened.

I Edit: OMG I just wrote this whole comments without finishing the video! I am in idiot, nevermind! 😂
I am new to this fandom and don’t understand all of it yet, but uh regards to 7:55 , here’s a fun theory:
It’s not that Bondrewd didn’t want to sacrifice his loved ones, (I think that would be out of character), it’s that he didn’t have anybody in the first place. He didn’t have someone that cared enough about him to sacrifice themselves. So he sacrificed his own body. The fact that he’s obsessed with this twisted idea of love and trying to understand it only supports my point. He is obviously a sociopath and feels disconnected from normal people’s ideas of love, which can be very isolating, In his view, everything he does, his vile methods and sacrifices, are for the greater good of humanity/science. His effed up love for science is the only feeling of warmth and love he knows. As a passionate scientist it must fascinating to know of this obscure thing that he can never feel, but only observe and test in other people.
In the last chapter of this arc, Nanachi gets himself in danger by trying to stop Reg from mindless destruction of Bondrewd’s base. Stopping Reg would clearly be in Bondrewd’s interest. Bondrewd is then seen VERY concerned for Nanachi and tries to stop them. His speech when saying farewell to Nanachi also makes me think part of him cares about Nanachi. But maybe I’m just naive and Bondrewd manipulated me into thinking he still has human sentiments 😂 His monologues got inside my head, lol.
Also I think Prushka’s biological parent is one of his aspiring “hands” that was hurt in the process of using the forbidden Soul Slave relic. In the Manga he says that she came from a “broken carriage” or something like that. As he sees the hands of mere extensions of himself, to him, she really is PARTLY his daughter because she came from a biological tool that carries parts of his soul fragments.
Bear with me though, I read the Manga in English which is not my first language, so maybe i misunderstood.
Anyways, this show is incredibly fun to analyse and I absolutely love the darkness and body horror 💕 Your video is great!

This subversion of the "power of love" trope works very well 'cause in many fictions when it is used it always feels like there's a god somewhere judging the love of the protagonist pure enough and allowing him to gain power or the odds to play in his favor which is jarring like who decides it's true love? The portrayal of this trope here goes a really long way there's no god judging on morals in this world nudging the odds to favor our pure heroes.

A lot of people say bondrewd loves his children. However, I don’t really completely agree with this. He only loves because he figured out that to gain the blessing of the abyss, there needs to be love. To him, love is just another component for cartridges. As he thanks the protagonists for “completing prushka”.
