I wish there was more media attention given to healthcare workers than is given to law enforcement (for reasons that aren't necessary or perhaps, appropriate, to repeat here). Thank you, as always, for giving great reviews and content. You're one of my favorite channels on TH-cam. :) And I'm watching the 24-part Great Courses lecture series available on Amazon covering the Black Death in the 14th century. Even though that took place so long ago in the past, there are many psycho-social-political similarities to today.

That series about the Black Death sounds very intriguing! Are you enjoying it so far? I might have to check it out!

@@MoviesAndMunchies Very much so. I finally finished it yesterday. It is just a series of lectures - not a 'documentary' - with each episode lasting about 30 minutes - but the Prof. is an engaging speaker, is good at bringing the past alive, making excellent comparisons to today (even though this was made in 2016, pre-Covid), and delves into aspects of the Plague that one might not have connected at a first thought - like the art produced, its effects on the Church and the structure of society. And, there 's a fun 'spot the rat' thing going on in the room she's lecturing from in each episode. :)

Amazing documentary amazing stories...I cried and thought to myself these ppl are what heroes are. These neurosurgeons are absolute heroes. The job they have is so so difficult. Like the one said its plain n simple you just cant fuck up. The pressure of knowing that someone's life is in your hands. You absolutely CAN'T fuck up. But you're human so things do happen and that is where you see the docs shed a few tears . I was so sad when mitzy had a stroke and when chris passed after such a long long fight.

Lenox hill brings back memories. My mom was a nurse in King's County hospital but occasionally she would work at Lenox hill.

Oh wow! I'm curious if they kept you conscious during the surgery...and what was the experience like? Obviously you don't have to answer either of these... :-)

Movies And Munchies thankfully I was asleep during the operations, the worst part was having the staples removed weeks later. Overall the experience was scary but the staff are so fantastic they help you pull through. 35 years later I’m still going strong and have the scars to prove that I’m alive and couldn’t wish for anything more.

I watched the first episode while eating supper. Bad move. The man with the abscess on his butt... omg... that pain was too real. I am going to continue watching this show, but without a meal in front of me.

I then went onto Flint town. My God talk about educating me on corruption, on the difficulty n fear of being a police officer in a city like flint and like lenox hill focused on 4 docs this focuses on about 4 or 5 police officers in flint including the chief. It's very moving and emotional like Lenox hill. And it shows it all. Their was a drug raid and b4 this it shows how they are trained and how diverting from the plan can get your partners killed so u stick to the almost robotic plan n they bust in announcing flint police search warrant n u hear barking n they just announce dog n u hear a shot then u hear again dog n another shot. They r carrying these bodies of dead dogs out I was bawling. The dealer couldn't care less about himself he was just like man my dogs didnt deserve that I knew I should have stopped. N the cop even looked n felt sad with that criminal sitting in handcuffs. The whole thg was gut wrenching. The whole documentary is gut wrenching but very eye opening. Then the latest was Living Undocumented. I'm not gonna get into Trump n politics but there was a statement in there saying we used to deport criminals not families criminals not mothers. N I get the law I do but in this documentary they deported a military wife. I believe her husband had served for a long time. She and him had children and she raised his kids and supported him while he served our country. Shes been here for a long long time. She has a home in Florida with her veteran husband and 2 teen daughters...American flags all over the yard...bbqs going on and a regular American family. So many ppl were fighting for her to not be deported and ripped away from her kids and home n husband. They even contacted trump to explain this is a military family. Under his zero tolerance he made her leave. The oldest daughter n dad stayed in their home n the mom left n took her younger daughter. The sisters had 2 be ripped apart plus the husband lost his youngest daughter after serving our damn country and I am now friends with her on fb. She in still in Mexico with her youngest daughter she is almost a lawyer now n fighting for her family. There are about 5 stories that are told during this documentary. We kind of think or I always did they dont belong here get here legally. I didn't realize how long that could be n some were in big danger. The one family's husband his job was in control of money or something n the gangs were sending his family letters saying they were going to kill n dismember all 4 of them. Netflix has amazing documentaries I think bc nothing is sugar coated. It's real n raw.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and the stories were truly heroic. I am very uncomfortable, however, with one scene. The way they portrayed the younger patient with sickle cell disease in episode 7 as drug-seeking was disgusting. This population is suffers from systemic racism and poor pain control based on the color of their skin and an over compensation to the opioid epidemic. In the ER, many physicians act the same way and do not take their pain seriously. This was disappointing to watch and perpetuates a dangerous stereotype.

That poor young man! As they described what the disease does and feels like, it sounds absolutely excruciating to live in that constant pain...and then to have people not believe you or assume you're just in for drugs only adds to the agony.

    • @BoboWanderlust

I watched that scene a second time and, because of the second viewing, I came away with a changed view. The ER doctor says about four times how much concern she has for people like that young man who live in constant pain. However, along with that compassion, when she first meets a patient in the ER she has to ask a few questions to determine if they are legit - do they really have the sickle cell disease. You can’t willy-nilly hand over narcotics to people without doing the background work. Yes, things got tense in that scene - in part because the young man was clearly in pain. When all was said and done, the ER doctor gave him pills to take to get him through the next day and she gave him a prescription for more pain pills. After she learned he was legit, she gave him the pain pills as well as a prescription for more. The second viewing helped me understand the interaction much more.

@@BoboWanderlust She was amazing how she handled the situation. You have to consider all the other times when people are seeking out drugs. She did her best.
